Lawsuits Among Believers

If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people?(A) Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world?(B) And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? I say this to shame you.(C) Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?(D) But instead, one brother(E) takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers!(F)

The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?(G) Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters.(H) Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?(I) Do not be deceived:(J) Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers(K) nor men who have sex with men[a](L) 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers(M) will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were.(N) But you were washed,(O) you were sanctified,(P) you were justified(Q) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Sexual Immorality

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial.(R) “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.”(S) The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord,(T) and the Lord for the body. 14 By his power God raised the Lord from the dead,(U) and he will raise us also.(V) 15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself?(W) Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[b](X) 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[c](Y)

18 Flee from sexual immorality.(Z) All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.(AA) 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples(AB) of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;(AC) 20 you were bought at a price.(AD) Therefore honor God with your bodies.(AE)

Job

42 Then Job replied to the Lord:

“I know that you can do all things;(A)
    no purpose of yours can be thwarted.(B)
You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’(C)
    Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
    things too wonderful for me to know.(D)

“You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.’(E)
My ears had heard of you(F)
    but now my eyes have seen you.(G)
Therefore I despise myself(H)
    and repent(I) in dust and ashes.”(J)

Epilogue

After the Lord had said these things to Job(K), he said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “I am angry with you and your two friends,(L) because you have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.(M) So now take seven bulls and seven rams(N) and go to my servant Job(O) and sacrifice a burnt offering(P) for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer(Q) and not deal with you according to your folly.(R) You have not spoken the truth about me, as my servant Job has.”(S) So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite(T) did what the Lord told them; and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.(U)

10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes(V) and gave him twice as much as he had before.(W) 11 All his brothers and sisters and everyone who had known him before(X) came and ate with him in his house. They comforted and consoled him over all the trouble the Lord had brought on him,(Y) and each one gave him a piece of silver[a] and a gold ring.

12 The Lord blessed the latter part of Job’s life more than the former part. He had fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen and a thousand donkeys. 13 And he also had seven sons and three daughters. 14 The first daughter he named Jemimah, the second Keziah and the third Keren-Happuch. 15 Nowhere in all the land were there found women as beautiful as Job’s daughters, and their father granted them an inheritance along with their brothers.

16 After this, Job lived a hundred and forty years; he saw his children and their children to the fourth generation. 17 And so Job died, an old man and full of years.(Z)

BOOK I

Psalms 1–41

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one(AA)
    who does not walk(AB) in step with the wicked(AC)
or stand in the way(AD) that sinners take(AE)
    or sit(AF) in the company of mockers,(AG)
but whose delight(AH) is in the law of the Lord,(AI)
    and who meditates(AJ) on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree(AK) planted by streams(AL) of water,(AM)
    which yields its fruit(AN) in season
and whose leaf(AO) does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.(AP)

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff(AQ)
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand(AR) in the judgment,(AS)
    nor sinners in the assembly(AT) of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over(AU) the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.(AV)

Psalm 2

Why do the nations conspire[b]
    and the peoples plot(AW) in vain?
The kings(AX) of the earth rise up
    and the rulers band together
    against the Lord and against his anointed,(AY) saying,
“Let us break their chains(AZ)
    and throw off their shackles.”(BA)

The One enthroned(BB) in heaven laughs;(BC)
    the Lord scoffs at them.
He rebukes them in his anger(BD)
    and terrifies them in his wrath,(BE) saying,
“I have installed my king(BF)
    on Zion,(BG) my holy mountain.(BH)

I will proclaim the Lord’s decree:

He said to me, “You are my son;(BI)
    today I have become your father.(BJ)
Ask me,
    and I will make the nations(BK) your inheritance,(BL)
    the ends of the earth(BM) your possession.
You will break them with a rod of iron[c];(BN)
    you will dash them to pieces(BO) like pottery.(BP)

10 Therefore, you kings, be wise;(BQ)
    be warned, you rulers(BR) of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear(BS)
    and celebrate his rule(BT) with trembling.(BU)
12 Kiss his son,(BV) or he will be angry
    and your way will lead to your destruction,
for his wrath(BW) can flare up in a moment.
    Blessed(BX) are all who take refuge(BY) in him.

Psalm 3[d]

A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.(BZ)

Lord, how many are my foes!
    How many rise up against me!
Many are saying of me,
    “God will not deliver him.(CA)[e]

But you, Lord, are a shield(CB) around me,
    my glory, the One who lifts my head high.(CC)
I call out to the Lord,(CD)
    and he answers me from his holy mountain.(CE)

I lie down and sleep;(CF)
    I wake again,(CG) because the Lord sustains me.
I will not fear(CH) though tens of thousands
    assail me on every side.(CI)

Arise,(CJ) Lord!
    Deliver me,(CK) my God!
Strike(CL) all my enemies on the jaw;
    break the teeth(CM) of the wicked.

From the Lord comes deliverance.(CN)
    May your blessing(CO) be on your people.

Psalm 4[f]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of David.

Answer me(CP) when I call to you,
    my righteous God.
Give me relief from my distress;(CQ)
    have mercy(CR) on me and hear my prayer.(CS)

How long will you people turn my glory(CT) into shame?(CU)
    How long will you love delusions and seek false gods[g]?[h](CV)
Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant(CW) for himself;
    the Lord hears(CX) when I call to him.

Tremble and[i] do not sin;(CY)
    when you are on your beds,(CZ)
    search your hearts and be silent.
Offer the sacrifices of the righteous
    and trust in the Lord.(DA)

Many, Lord, are asking, “Who will bring us prosperity?”
    Let the light of your face shine on us.(DB)
Fill my heart(DC) with joy(DD)
    when their grain and new wine(DE) abound.

In peace(DF) I will lie down and sleep,(DG)
    for you alone, Lord,
    make me dwell in safety.(DH)

Psalm 5[j]

For the director of music. For pipes. A psalm of David.

Listen(DI) to my words, Lord,
    consider my lament.(DJ)
Hear my cry for help,(DK)
    my King and my God,(DL)
    for to you I pray.

In the morning,(DM) Lord, you hear my voice;
    in the morning I lay my requests before you
    and wait expectantly.(DN)
For you are not a God who is pleased with wickedness;
    with you, evil people(DO) are not welcome.
The arrogant(DP) cannot stand(DQ)
    in your presence.
You hate(DR) all who do wrong;
    you destroy those who tell lies.(DS)
The bloodthirsty and deceitful
    you, Lord, detest.
But I, by your great love,
    can come into your house;
in reverence(DT) I bow down(DU)
    toward your holy temple.(DV)

Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness(DW)
    because of my enemies—
    make your way straight(DX) before me.
Not a word from their mouth can be trusted;
    their heart is filled with malice.
Their throat is an open grave;(DY)
    with their tongues they tell lies.(DZ)
10 Declare them guilty, O God!
    Let their intrigues be their downfall.
Banish them for their many sins,(EA)
    for they have rebelled(EB) against you.
11 But let all who take refuge in you be glad;
    let them ever sing for joy.(EC)
Spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name(ED) may rejoice in you.(EE)

12 Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous;(EF)
    you surround them(EG) with your favor as with a shield.(EH)

Psalm 6[k]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. According to sheminith.[l] A psalm of David.

Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger(EI)
    or discipline me in your wrath.
Have mercy on me,(EJ) Lord, for I am faint;(EK)
    heal me,(EL) Lord, for my bones are in agony.(EM)
My soul is in deep anguish.(EN)
    How long,(EO) Lord, how long?

Turn,(EP) Lord, and deliver me;
    save me because of your unfailing love.(EQ)
Among the dead no one proclaims your name.
    Who praises you from the grave?(ER)

I am worn out(ES) from my groaning.(ET)

All night long I flood my bed with weeping(EU)
    and drench my couch with tears.(EV)
My eyes grow weak(EW) with sorrow;
    they fail because of all my foes.

Away from me,(EX) all you who do evil,(EY)
    for the Lord has heard my weeping.
The Lord has heard my cry for mercy;(EZ)
    the Lord accepts my prayer.
10 All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and anguish;(FA)
    they will turn back and suddenly be put to shame.(FB)
