⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and ^(A)the strength of sin is the law.

¹⁵ because ^(A)the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

The Law Brings a Curse

¹⁰ For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, ^(A)“Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.” ¹¹ But that no one is ^[a]justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for ^(B)“the just shall live by faith.” ¹² Yet ^(C)the law is not of faith, but ^(D)“the man who does them shall live by them.”

^13 (E)Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, ^(F)“Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),

⁵ For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law ^(A)were at work in our members ^(B)to bear fruit to death. ⁶ But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve ^(C)in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Sin’s Advantage in the Law

⁷ What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, ^(D)I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, ^(E)“You shall not covet.” ⁸ But ^(F)sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For ^(G)apart from the law sin was dead. ⁹ I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. ¹⁰ And the commandment, ^(H)which was to bring life, I found to bring death. ¹¹ For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. ¹² Therefore ^(I)the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Law Cannot Save from Sin

¹³ Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

²³ For ^(A)the wages of sin is death, but ^(B)the ^[a]gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²⁰ Moreover ^(A)the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace ^(B)abounded much more,
