²⁹ Two or three prophets^(A) should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.^(B)

¹⁰ to another miraculous powers,^(A) to another prophecy,^(B) to another distinguishing between spirits,^(C) to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,^[a](D) and to still another the interpretation of tongues.^[b]

¹⁹ Do not quench the Spirit.^{(A) 20} Do not treat prophecies^(B) with contempt ²¹ but test them all;^(C) hold on to what is good,^(D)

On Denying the Incarnation

4 Dear friends,^(A) do not believe every spirit,^(B) but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.^{(C) 2} This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh^(D) is from God,^{(E) 3} but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist,^(F) which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.^(G)

³⁹ Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager^(A) to prophesy,^(B) and do not forbid speaking in tongues.
