² For he who ^(A)speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

⁴⁶ For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Then Peter answered,

¹⁷ And these ^(A)signs will follow those who ^[a]believe: ^(B)In My name they will cast out demons; ^(C)they will speak with new tongues;

⁶ And when Paul had ^(A)laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and ^(B)they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

² And though I have the gift of ^(A)prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, ^(B)so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

⁴ And ^(A)they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began ^(B)to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response

⁵ And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, ^(C)devout men, from every nation under heaven. ⁶ And when this sound occurred, the ^(D)multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. ⁷ Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak ^(E)Galileans? ⁸ And how is it that we hear, each in our own ^[a]language in which we were born? ⁹ Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and ^(F)Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, ¹⁰ Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, ¹¹ Cretans and ^[b]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”

^3 (A)how that by revelation ^(B)He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, ⁴ by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), ⁵ which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: ⁶ that the Gentiles ^(C)should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel, ^7 (D)of which I became a minister ^(E)according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by ^(F)the effective working of His power.

Purpose of the Mystery

⁸ To me, ^(G)who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles ^(H)the unsearchable riches of Christ, ⁹ and to make all see what is the ^[a]fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who ^(I)created all things ^[b]through Jesus Christ;

⁵¹ Behold, I tell you a ^[a]mystery: ^(A)We shall not all sleep, ^(B)but we shall all be changed—

⁹ So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without ^[a]significance. ¹¹ Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a ^[b]foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.
