² For anyone who speaks in a tongue^[a](A) does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them;^(B) they utter mysteries^(C) by the Spirit.

⁴⁶ For they heard them speaking in tongues^[a](A) and praising God.

Then Peter said,

¹⁷ And these signs^(A) will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons;^(B) they will speak in new tongues;^(C)

⁶ When Paul placed his hands on them,^(A) the Holy Spirit came on them,^(B) and they spoke in tongues^[a](C) and prophesied.

² If I have the gift of prophecy^(A) and can fathom all mysteries^(B) and all knowledge,^(C) and if I have a faith^(D) that can move mountains,^(E) but do not have love, I am nothing.

⁴ All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit^(A) and began to speak in other tongues^[a](B) as the Spirit enabled them.

⁵ Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing^(C) Jews from every nation under heaven. ⁶ When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. ⁷ Utterly amazed,^(D) they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans?^{(E) 8} Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? ⁹ Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,^(F) Pontus^(G) and Asia,^{[b](H) 10} Phrygia^(I) and Pamphylia,^(J) Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene;^(K) visitors from Rome ¹¹ (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

³ that is, the mystery^(A) made known to me by revelation,^(B) as I have already written briefly. ⁴ In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight^(C) into the mystery of Christ, ⁵ which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.^{(D) 6} This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs^(E) together with Israel, members together of one body,^(F) and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.^(G)

⁷ I became a servant of this gospel^(H) by the gift of God’s grace given me^(I) through the working of his power.^{(J) 8} Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people,^(K) this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles^(L) the boundless riches of Christ,^{(M) 9} and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery,^(N) which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.

⁵¹ Listen, I tell you a mystery:^(A) We will not all sleep,^(B) but we will all be changed^(C)—

⁹ So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. ¹⁰ Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. ¹¹ If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.^(A)
