The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs

16 ^(A)And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and ^(B)to test him ^(C)they asked him to show them ^(D)a sign from heaven. ² He answered them,^{[a] (E)}“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ ³ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ ^(F)You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret ^(G)the signs of the times. ^4 (H)An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So ^(I)he left them and departed.

¹⁸ Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, ^(A)“What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because ^(B)he was preaching ^(C)Jesus and the resurrection. ¹⁹ And they took him and brought him to ^(D)the Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this ^(E)new teaching is that you are presenting? ²⁰ For you bring some ^(F)strange things to our ears. We wish to know therefore what these things mean.” ²¹ Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there would spend their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.

The Sign of Jonah

³⁸ Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, ^(A)we wish to see a sign from you.” ³⁹ But he answered them, ^(B)“An evil and ^(C)adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

¹⁸ So the Jews said to him, ^(A)“What sign do you show us for doing these things?”

¹⁶ while others, ^(A)to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

The Pharisees Demand a Sign

^11 (A)The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, ^(B)seeking from him ^(C)a sign from heaven ^(D)to test him.

²⁰ But if it is by ^(A)the finger of God that I cast out demons, then ^(B)the kingdom of God has come upon you.

²⁸ So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,
