Descendants of Reuben
5 The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel ((A)for he was the firstborn, but because (B)he defiled his father's couch, (C)his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel, so that he could not be enrolled as the oldest son; 2 (D)though Judah became strong among his brothers and a (E)chief came from him, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph), 3 the (F)sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. 4 The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, 5 Micah his son, Reaiah his son, Baal his son, 6 Beerah his son, whom (G)Tiglath-pileser[a] king of Assyria carried away into exile; he was a chief of the Reubenites. 7 And his kinsmen by their clans, (H)when the genealogy of their generations was recorded: the chief, Jeiel, and Zechariah, 8 and Bela the son of Azaz, son of (I)Shema, son of Joel, who lived in (J)Aroer, as far as (K)Nebo and (L)Baal-meon. 9 He also lived to the east as far as the entrance of the desert this side of the Euphrates, because their livestock had multiplied (M)in the land of Gilead. 10 And in the days of Saul they waged war against the (N)Hagrites, who fell into their hand. And they lived in their tents throughout all the region east of Gilead.

The Eastern Tribes Return Home
22 At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2 and said to them, “You have kept (A)all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you (B)and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. 3 You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God. 4 (C)And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, (D)which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. 5 (E)Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, (F)to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” 6 So Joshua (G)blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents.
7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, (H)but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, 8 he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. (I)Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.” 9 So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go (J)to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses.
The Eastern Tribes' Altar of Witness
10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.

7 Now therefore (A)divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”
The Inheritance East of the Jordan
8 With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh[a] the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (B)which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: 9 (C)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and (D)all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (E)and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the (F)region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and (G)all Bashan to Salecah; 12 (H)all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of (I)the remnant of the Rephaim); (J)these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 (K)Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.
14 (L)To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.
15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, (M)which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by (N)Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; (O)Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 (P)and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and (Q)Kiriathaim, and (R)Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and (S)Beth-peor, and (T)the slopes of Pisgah, and (U)Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, (V)all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (W)whom Moses defeated with (X)the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 (Y)Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.
24 Moses gave an inheritance also to the tribe of Gad, to the people of Gad, according to their clans. 25 (Z)Their territory was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the Ammonites, to Aroer, which is east of (AA)Rabbah, 26 and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from (AB)Mahanaim to the territory of Debir,[b] 27 and in the valley Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, (AC)Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, having the Jordan as a boundary, to the lower end of the Sea of (AD)Chinnereth, eastward beyond the Jordan. 28 This is the inheritance of the people of Gad according to their clans, with their cities and villages.
29 And Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh. It was allotted to the half-tribe of the people of Manasseh according to their clans. 30 Their region extended from (AE)Mahanaim, through all Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all (AF)the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, 31 and half Gilead, and (AG)Ashtaroth, and Edrei, the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. These were allotted to the people of (AH)Machir the son of Manasseh for the half of the people of Machir according to their clans.
32 These are the inheritances that Moses distributed (AI)in the plains of Moab, beyond the Jordan east of Jericho.
