Elkanah and His Wives

1 Now there was a man from (A)Ramathaim-zophim from the (B)hill country of Ephraim, and his name was (C)Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 And he had (D)two wives: the name of one was (E)Hannah and the name of the [a]other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

3 Now this man would go up from his city (F)yearly (G)to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of armies in (H)Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests to the Lord there. 4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he (I)would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; 5 but to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, (J)but the Lord had closed her womb. 6 Her rival, moreover, (K)would provoke her bitterly to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. 7 And it happened year after year, as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, that she would provoke her; so she wept and would not eat. 8 Then Elkanah her husband would say to her, “Hannah, why do you weep, and why do you not eat, and why is your heart sad? (L)Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

9 Then Hannah got up after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of (M)the [b]temple of the Lord. 10 She, [c]greatly distressed, prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. 11 And she (N)made a vow and said, “Lord of armies, if You will indeed (O)look on the affliction of Your bond-servant and remember me, and not forget Your bond-servant, but will give Your bond-servant a [d]son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and (P)a razor shall never come on his head.”

12 Now it came about, as she [e]continued praying before the Lord, that Eli was watching her mouth. 13 As for Hannah, (Q)she was speaking in her heart, only her lips were quivering, but her voice was not heard. So Eli thought that she was drunk. 14 Then Eli said to her, “(R)How long will you behave like a drunk? Get rid of your wine!” 15 But Hannah answered and said, “No, my lord, I am a woman [f]despairing in spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I (S)have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not [g]consider your bond-servant a useless woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great concern and provocation.” 17 Then Eli answered and said, “(T)Go in peace; and may the God of Israel (U)grant your request that you have asked of Him.” 18 She said, “(V)Let your bond-servant find favor in your sight.” So the woman went on her way and ate, and (W)her face was no longer sad.

Samuel Is Born to Hannah

19 Then they got up early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord, and returned again to their house in (X)Ramah. And Elkanah [h]had relations with Hannah his wife, and (Y)the Lord remembered her. 20 It came about [i]in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “(Z)Because I have asked for him of the Lord.”

21 Then the man Elkanah (AA)went up with all his household to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “I will not go until the child is weaned; then I will (AB)bring him, so that he may appear before the Lord and (AC)stay there for life.” 23 (AD)Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do [j]what seems best to you. Stay until you have weaned him; only (AE)may the Lord confirm His word.” So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 Now when she had weaned him, (AF)she took him up with her, with a three-year-old bull, one ephah of flour, and a jug of wine, and brought him to (AG)the house of the Lord in Shiloh, although the child was young. 25 Then (AH)they [k]slaughtered the bull, and (AI)brought the boy to Eli. 26 And she said, “Pardon me, my lord! (AJ)As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you, praying to the Lord. 27 (AK)For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my request which I asked of Him. 28 (AL)So I have also [l]dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is [m]dedicated to the Lord.” And (AM)he worshiped the Lord there.

The Birth of Samuel

1 There was a certain man from Ramathaim,(A) a Zuphite[a](B) from the hill country(C) of Ephraim,(D) whose name was Elkanah(E) son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives;(F) one was called Hannah and the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 Year after year(G) this man went up from his town to worship(H) and sacrifice to the Lord Almighty at Shiloh,(I) where Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli,(J) were priests of the Lord. 4 Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,(K) he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.(L) 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion(M) because he loved her, and the Lord had closed her womb.(N) 6 Because the Lord had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her.(O) 7 This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.(P) 8 Her husband Elkanah would say to her, “Hannah, why are you weeping? Why don’t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don’t I mean more to you than ten sons?(Q)”

9 Once when they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh, Hannah stood up. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his chair by the doorpost of the Lord’s house.(R) 10 In her deep anguish(S) Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. 11 And she made a vow,(T) saying, “Lord Almighty(U), if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember(V) me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life,(W) and no razor(X) will ever be used on his head.”

12 As she kept on praying to the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk 14 and said to her, “How long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.”

15 “Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied, “I am a woman who is deeply troubled.(Y) I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring(Z) out my soul to the Lord. 16 Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.”(AA)

17 Eli answered, “Go in peace,(AB) and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.(AC)”

18 She said, “May your servant find favor in your eyes.(AD)” Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.(AE)

19 Early the next morning they arose and worshiped before the Lord and then went back to their home at Ramah.(AF) Elkanah made love to his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered(AG) her. 20 So in the course of time Hannah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(AH) She named(AI) him Samuel,[b](AJ) saying, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”

Hannah Dedicates Samuel

21 When her husband Elkanah went up with all his family to offer the annual(AK) sacrifice to the Lord and to fulfill his vow,(AL) 22 Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, “After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present(AM) him before the Lord, and he will live there always.”[c]

23 “Do what seems best to you,” her husband Elkanah told her. “Stay here until you have weaned him; only may the Lord make good(AN) his[d] word.” So the woman stayed at home and nursed her son until she had weaned(AO) him.

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull,[e](AP) an ephah[f] of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed(AQ) for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life(AR) he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.

Elkanah and His Wives

1 There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the [a]hill country of Ephraim, named Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an [b]Ephraimite. 2 He had two wives, one named Hannah and the other named Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had none.

3 This man went up from his city [c]each year to worship and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh. Hophni and Phinehas, the two sons of Eli, were priests to the Lord there. 4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions [of the sacrificial meat] to Peninnah his wife and all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he would give a double portion, because he loved Hannah, but the Lord had [d]given her no children. 6 Hannah’s rival provoked her bitterly, to irritate and embarrass her, because the Lord had [e]left her childless. 7 So it happened year after year, whenever she went up to the house of the Lord, Peninnah provoked her; so she wept and would not eat. 8 Then Elkanah her husband said to her, “Hannah, why do you cry and why do you not eat? Why are you so sad and discontent? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

9 So Hannah got up after eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat beside the doorpost of the temple (tabernacle) of the Lord. 10 Hannah was [f]greatly distressed, and she prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. 11 She made a vow, saying, “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction (suffering) of Your maidservant and remember, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life; a [g]razor shall never touch his head.”

12 Now it happened as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli was watching her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart (mind); only her lips were moving, and her voice was not heard, so Eli [h]thought she was drunk. 14 Eli said to her, “How long will you make yourself drunk? Get rid of your wine.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman with a despairing spirit. I have not been drinking wine or any intoxicating drink, but I have poured out my soul before the Lord.(A) 16 Do not regard your maidservant as a wicked and worthless woman, for I have spoken until now out of my great concern and [bitter] provocation.” 17 Then Eli answered and said, “Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of Him.” 18 Hannah said, “Let your maidservant find grace and favor in your sight.” So the woman went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad.

Samuel Is Born to Hannah

19 The family got up early the next morning, worshiped before the Lord, and returned to their home in Ramah. Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the Lord remembered her [prayer]. 20 It came about in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; she named him [i]Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked for him from the Lord.”

21 Then the man Elkanah and all his household went up to offer to the Lord the [j]yearly sacrifice and pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “I will not go up until the child is [k]weaned; and then I will bring him, so that he may appear before the Lord and remain there as long as he lives.” 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may the Lord establish and confirm His word.” So the woman remained [behind] and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 Now when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a [l]leather bottle of wine [to pour over the burnt offering for a sweet fragrance], and she brought Samuel to the Lord’s house in Shiloh, although the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and brought the child to Eli. 26 Hannah said, “Oh, my lord! As [surely as] your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood beside you here, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my request which I asked of Him. 28 Therefore I have also dedicated him to the Lord; as long as he lives he is dedicated to the Lord.” And they worshiped the Lord there.

  2. 1 Samuel 1:1 It is sometimes claimed that Samuel was from the tribe of Ephraim (rather than the tribe of Levi) and so was not eligible to serve as a priest. He was an Ephraimite only in the sense that his family lived in the tribal area of Ephraim. His genealogy is given in 1 Chr 6:22-28. At least two other men in the passage are named Elkanah. Samuel’s father, Elkanah, is the man mentioned in 1 Chr 6:27. The men mentioned in 1 Chr 6:23, 24, and 26 are several generations removed from Samuel.

  11. 1 Samuel 1:22 At this time children were nursed until about age three. But it may be fair to say that Hannah also wanted to keep the boy as long as she reasonably could; giving up her only child—even for the best of purposes—must have been terribly difficult.

Elcana e suas mulheres

Ana roga a Deus que lhe dê um filho

9 Então, Ana se levantou, depois que comeram e beberam em Siló; e Eli, o sacerdote, estava assentado numa cadeira, junto a um pilar do templo do Senhor. 10 Ela, pois, com amargura de alma, orou ao Senhor e chorou abundantemente. 11 E votou um voto, dizendo: Senhor dos Exércitos! Se benignamente atentares para a aflição da tua serva, e de mim te lembrares, e da tua serva te não esqueceres, mas à tua serva deres um filho varão, ao Senhor o darei por todos os dias da sua vida, e sobre a sua cabeça não passará navalha.

12 E sucedeu que, perseverando ela em orar perante o Senhor, Eli fez atenção à sua boca, 13 porquanto Ana, no seu coração, falava, e só se moviam os seus lábios, porém não se ouvia a sua voz; pelo que Eli a teve por embriagada. 14 E disse-lhe Eli: Até quando estarás tu embriagada? Aparta de ti o teu vinho. 15 Porém Ana respondeu e disse: Não, senhor meu, eu sou uma mulher atribulada de espírito; nem vinho nem bebida forte tenho bebido; porém tenho derramado a minha alma perante o Senhor. 16 Não tenhas, pois, a tua serva por filha de Belial; porque da multidão dos meus cuidados e do meu desgosto tenho falado até agora. 17 Então, respondeu Eli e disse: Vai em paz, e o Deus de Israel te conceda a tua petição que lhe pediste. 18 E disse ela: Ache a tua serva graça em teus olhos. Assim, a mulher se foi seu caminho e comeu, e o seu semblante já não era triste.

19 E levantaram-se de madrugada, e adoraram perante o Senhor, e voltaram, e vieram à sua casa, a Ramá. Elcana conheceu a Ana, sua mulher, e o Senhor se lembrou dela.

Nasce Samuel e é consagrado a Deus

20 E sucedeu que, passado algum tempo, Ana concebeu, e teve um filho, e chamou o seu nome Samuel, porque, dizia ela, o tenho pedido ao Senhor.

21 E subiu aquele homem Elcana, com toda a sua casa, a sacrificar ao Senhor o sacrifício anual e a cumprir o seu voto. 22 Porém Ana não subiu, mas disse a seu marido: Quando o menino for desmamado, então, o levarei, para que apareça perante o Senhor e lá fique para sempre. 23 E Elcana, seu marido, lhe disse: Faze o que bem te parecer a teus olhos; fica até que o desmames; tão somente confirme o Senhor a sua palavra. Assim, ficou a mulher e deu leite a seu filho, até que o desmamou. 24 E, havendo-o desmamado, o levou consigo, com três bezerros e um efa de farinha e um odre de vinho, e o trouxe à Casa do Senhor, a Siló. E era o menino ainda muito criança. 25 E degolaram um bezerro e assim trouxeram o menino a Eli. 26 E disse ela: Ah! Meu senhor, viva a tua alma, meu senhor; eu sou aquela mulher que aqui esteve contigo, para orar ao Senhor. 27 Por este menino orava eu; e o Senhor me concedeu a minha petição que eu lhe tinha pedido. 28 Pelo que também ao Senhor eu o entreguei, por todos os dias que viver; pois ao Senhor foi pedido. E ele adorou ali ao Senhor.

1 Havia certo homem de Ramataim, zufita[a], dos montes de Efraim, chamado Elcana, filho de Jeroão, neto de Eliú e bisneto de Toú, filho do efraimita Zufe. 2 Ele tinha duas mulheres: uma se chamava Ana, e a outra Penina. Penina tinha filhos, Ana, porém, não tinha.

3 Todos os anos esse homem subia de sua cidade a Siló para adorar e sacrificar ao Senhor dos Exércitos. Lá, Hofni e Finéias, os dois filhos de Eli, eram sacerdotes do Senhor. 4 No dia em que Elcana oferecia sacrifícios, dava porções à sua mulher Penina e a todos os filhos e filhas dela. 5 Mas a Ana dava uma porção dupla, porque a amava, apesar de que o Senhor a tinha deixado estéril. 6 E porque o Senhor a tinha deixado estéril, sua rival a provocava continuamente, a fim de irritá-la. 7 Isso acontecia ano após ano. Sempre que Ana subia à casa do Senhor, sua rival a provocava e ela chorava e não comia. 8 Elcana, seu marido, lhe perguntava: “Ana, por que você está chorando? Por que não come? Por que está triste? Será que eu não sou melhor para você do que dez filhos?”

9 Certa vez quando terminou de comer e beber em Siló, estando o sacerdote Eli sentado numa cadeira junto à entrada do santuário do Senhor, Ana se levantou 10 e, com a alma amargurada, chorou muito e orou ao Senhor. 11 E fez um voto, dizendo: “Ó Senhor dos Exércitos, se tu deres atenção à humilhação de tua serva, te lembrares de mim e não te esqueceres de tua serva, mas lhe deres um filho, então eu o dedicarei ao Senhor por todos os dias de sua vida, e o seu cabelo e a sua barba nunca serão cortados”.

12 Enquanto ela continuava a orar diante do Senhor, Eli observava sua boca. 13 Como Ana orava silenciosamente, seus lábios se mexiam mas não se ouvia sua voz. Então Eli pensou que ela estivesse embriagada 14 e lhe disse: “Até quando você continuará embriagada? Abandone o vinho!”

15 Ana respondeu: “Não se trata disso, meu senhor. Sou uma mulher muito angustiada. Não bebi vinho nem bebida fermentada; eu estava derramando minha alma diante do Senhor. 16 Não julgues tua serva uma mulher vadia; estou orando aqui até agora por causa de minha grande angústia e tristeza”.

17 Eli respondeu: “Vá em paz, e que o Deus de Israel lhe conceda o que você pediu”.

18 Ela disse: “Espero que sejas benevolente para com tua serva!” Então ela seguiu seu caminho, comeu, e seu rosto já não estava mais abatido.

19 Na manhã seguinte, eles se levantaram e adoraram o Senhor; então voltaram para casa, em Ramá. Elcana teve relações com sua mulher Ana, e o Senhor se lembrou dela. 20 Assim Ana engravidou e, no devido tempo, deu à luz um filho. E deu-lhe o nome de Samuel[b], dizendo: “Eu o pedi ao Senhor”.

Ana Consagra Samuel

21 Quando no ano seguinte Elcana subiu com toda a família para oferecer o sacrifício anual ao Senhor e para cumprir o seu voto, 22 Ana não foi e disse a seu marido: “Depois que o menino for desmamado, eu o levarei e o apresentarei ao Senhor, e ele morará ali para sempre”.

23 Disse Elcana, seu marido: “Faça o que lhe parecer melhor. Fique aqui até desmamá-lo; que o Senhor apenas confirme a palavra[c] dele!” Então ela ficou em casa e criou seu filho até que o desmamou.

24 Depois de desmamá-lo, levou o menino, ainda pequeno, à casa do Senhor, em Siló, com um novilho de três anos de idade,[d] uma arroba[e] de farinha e uma vasilha de couro cheia de vinho. 25 Eles sacrificaram o novilho e levaram o menino a Eli, 26 e ela lhe disse: “Meu senhor, juro por tua vida que eu sou a mulher que esteve aqui a teu lado, orando ao Senhor. 27 Era este menino que eu pedia, e o Senhor concedeu-me o pedido. 28 Por isso, agora, eu o dedico ao Senhor. Por toda a sua vida será dedicado ao Senhor”. E ali adorou o Senhor.
