Called to Be Holy

13 Therefore, (A)preparing your minds for action,[a] and (B)being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, (C)do not be conformed to the passions (D)of your former ignorance, 15 but (E)as he who called you is holy, you also be holy (F)in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, (G)“You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you (H)call on him as Father who (I)judges (J)impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves (K)with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you (L)were ransomed from (M)the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but (N)with the precious blood of Christ, like that of (O)a lamb (P)without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but (Q)was made manifest (R)in the last times for the sake of you 21 (S)who through him are believers in God, (T)who raised him from the dead and (U)gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for (V)a sincere brotherly love, (W)love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 (X)since you have been born again, (Y)not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through (Z)the living and abiding word of God; 24 for

(AA)“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
    and the flower falls,
25 (AB)but the word of the Lord remains forever.”

And this word (AC)is the good news that was preached to you.

A Living Stone and a Holy People

(AD)So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. (AE)Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual (AF)milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have (AG)tasted that the Lord is good.

As you come to him, a living stone (AH)rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, (AI)you yourselves like living stones are being built up as (AJ)a spiritual house, to be (AK)a holy priesthood, (AL)to offer spiritual sacrifices (AM)acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

(AN)“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
(AO)and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

So the honor is for you who (AP)believe, but for those who (AQ)do not believe,

(AR)“The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone,”[b]

and

(AS)“A stone of stumbling,
    and a rock of offense.”

They stumble because they disobey the word, (AT)as they were destined to do.

But you are (AU)a chosen race, (AV)a royal (AW)priesthood, (AX)a holy nation, (AY)a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you (AZ)out of darkness into (BA)his marvelous light. 10 (BB)Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Be Holy

13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober,(A) set your hope(B) on the grace to be brought to you(C) when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.(D) 14 As obedient(E) children, do not conform(F) to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.(G) 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;(H) 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a](I)

17 Since you call on a Father(J) who judges each person’s work(K) impartially,(L) live out your time as foreigners(M) here in reverent fear.(N) 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed(O) from the empty way of life(P) handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood(Q) of Christ, a lamb(R) without blemish or defect.(S) 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world,(T) but was revealed in these last times(U) for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God,(V) who raised him from the dead(W) and glorified him,(X) and so your faith and hope(Y) are in God.

22 Now that you have purified(Z) yourselves by obeying(AA) the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply,(AB) from the heart.[b] 23 For you have been born again,(AC) not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,(AD) through the living and enduring word of God.(AE) 24 For,

“All people are like grass,
    and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25     but the word of the Lord endures forever.”[c](AF)

And this is the word that was preached to you.

Therefore, rid yourselves(AG) of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander(AH) of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk,(AI) so that by it you may grow up(AJ) in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.(AK)

The Living Stone and a Chosen People

As you come to him, the living Stone(AL)—rejected by humans but chosen by God(AM) and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built(AN) into a spiritual house[d](AO) to be a holy priesthood,(AP) offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(AQ) For in Scripture it says:

“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
    a chosen and precious cornerstone,(AR)
and the one who trusts in him
will never be put to shame.”[e](AS)

Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe,(AT)

“The stone the builders rejected(AU)
    has become the cornerstone,”[f](AV)

and,

“A stone that causes people to stumble
and a rock that makes them fall.”[g](AW)

They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.(AX)

But you are a chosen people,(AY) a royal priesthood,(AZ) a holy nation,(BA) God’s special possession,(BB) that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(BC) 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God;(BD) once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

13 (A)“This is the offering that you shall make: one sixth of an ephah from each homer of wheat, and one sixth of an ephah from each homer of barley, 14 and as the fixed portion of oil, measured in baths, one tenth of a bath from each cor[a] (the cor, like the homer, contains (B)ten baths).[b] 15 And one sheep from every flock of two hundred, from the watering places of Israel for grain offering, burnt offering, and peace offerings, (C)to make atonement for them, declares the Lord God. 16 All the people of the land shall be obliged to give this offering to the prince in Israel. 17 (D)It shall be the prince's duty to furnish the burnt offerings, grain offerings, and drink offerings, at the feasts, the new moons, and the Sabbaths, all the appointed feasts of the house of Israel: he shall provide the sin offerings, grain offerings, burnt offerings, and peace offerings, to make atonement on behalf of the house of Israel.

18 “Thus says the Lord God: In the first month, (E)on the first day of the month, you shall take a bull from the herd without blemish, and (F)purify the sanctuary. 19 (G)The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it (H)on the doorposts of the temple, the four corners of the ledge of the altar, and the posts of the gate of the inner court. 20 You shall do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who has sinned through error or ignorance; so you shall make atonement for the temple.

21 (I)“In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall celebrate the Feast of the Passover, and for seven days unleavened bread shall be eaten. 22 On that day the prince (J)shall provide for himself and all the people of the land a young bull for a sin offering. 23 And on (K)the seven days of the festival he shall provide as a burnt offering to the Lord seven young bulls and seven rams without blemish, on each of the seven days; and (L)a male goat daily for a sin offering. 24 And (M)he shall provide as (N)a grain offering an ephah for each bull, an ephah for each ram, and a hin[c] of oil to each ephah. 25 (O)In the seventh month, on the fifteenth day of the month and for the seven days of the feast, (P)he shall make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, and grain offerings, and for the oil.

The Prince and the Feasts

46 “Thus says the Lord God: (Q)The gate of (R)the inner court that faces east shall be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened, and (S)on the day of the new moon it shall be opened. (T)The prince shall enter by the vestibule of the gate from outside, and shall take his stand by (U)the post of the gate. (V)The priests shall offer his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at (W)the threshold of the gate. Then he shall go out, but the gate shall not be shut until evening. (X)The people of the land shall bow down at the entrance of that gate before the Lord on the Sabbaths and on the new moons. (Y)The burnt offering that the prince offers to the Lord (Z)on the Sabbath day shall be six lambs without blemish and a ram without blemish. And (AA)the grain offering with the ram shall be an ephah,[d] and the grain offering with the lambs shall be (AB)as much as he is able, together with a hin[e] of oil to each ephah. On the day of the new moon he shall offer a bull from the herd without blemish, and six lambs and a ram, which shall be without blemish. As a grain offering he shall provide an ephah with the bull and an ephah with the ram, and with the lambs (AC)as much as he is able, together with a hin of oil to each ephah. (AD)When the prince enters, he shall enter by the vestibule of the gate, and he shall go out by the same way.

(AE)“When the people of the land (AF)come before the Lord at the appointed feasts, he who enters by the north gate to worship shall go out by the south gate, and he who enters by the south gate shall go out by the north gate: no one shall return by way of the gate by which he entered, but each shall go out straight ahead. 10 When they enter, (AG)the prince shall enter with them, and when they go out, he shall go out.

11 “At the feasts and the appointed festivals, (AH)the grain offering with a young bull shall be an ephah, and with a ram an ephah, and with the lambs (AI)as much as one is able to give, together with a hin of oil to an ephah. 12 When the prince provides (AJ)a freewill offering, either a burnt offering or peace offerings as a freewill offering to the Lord, (AK)the gate facing east shall be opened for him. And he shall offer his burnt offering or his peace offerings (AL)as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out the gate shall be shut.

13 (AM)“You shall provide a lamb a year old without blemish for a burnt offering to the Lord daily; morning by morning you shall provide it. 14 And (AN)you shall provide a grain offering with it morning by morning, one sixth of an ephah, and one third of a hin of oil to moisten the flour, as a grain offering to the Lord. This is a perpetual statute. 15 Thus the lamb and the meal offering and the oil shall be provided, morning by morning, for (AO)a regular burnt offering.

16 “Thus says the Lord God: If the prince makes a gift to any of his sons as his inheritance, it shall belong to his sons. It is their property by inheritance. 17 But if he makes a gift (AP)out of his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his to (AQ)the year of liberty. Then it shall revert to the prince; surely it is his inheritance—it shall belong to his sons. 18 (AR)The prince shall not take any of the inheritance of the people, (AS)thrusting them out of their property. He shall give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that none of my people shall be (AT)scattered from his property.”

Boiling Places for Offerings

19 Then he brought me through the entrance, which was (AU)at the side of the gate, to the north row of (AV)the holy chambers for the priests, and behold, a place was there at the extreme western end of them. 20 And he said to me, “This is the place where the priests (AW)shall boil the guilt offering and the sin offering, and where (AX)they shall bake the grain offering, in order not to bring them out into the outer court and so (AY)transmit holiness to the people.”

21 Then he brought me out to the outer court and led me around to the four corners of the court. And behold, in each corner of the court there was another court— 22 in the four corners of the court were small[f] courts, forty cubits[g] long and thirty broad; the four were of the same size. 23 On the inside, around each of the four courts was a row of masonry, with hearths made at the bottom of the rows all around. 24 Then he said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who (AZ)minister at the temple (BA)shall boil the sacrifices of the people.”

13 “‘This is the special gift you are to offer: a sixth of an ephah[a] from each homer of wheat and a sixth of an ephah[b] from each homer of barley. 14 The prescribed portion of olive oil, measured by the bath, is a tenth of a bath[c] from each cor (which consists of ten baths or one homer, for ten baths are equivalent to a homer). 15 Also one sheep is to be taken from every flock of two hundred from the well-watered pastures of Israel. These will be used for the grain offerings, burnt offerings(A) and fellowship offerings to make atonement(B) for the people, declares the Sovereign Lord. 16 All the people of the land will be required to give this special offering to the prince in Israel. 17 It will be the duty of the prince to provide the burnt offerings, grain offerings and drink offerings at the festivals, the New Moons(C) and the Sabbaths(D)—at all the appointed festivals of Israel. He will provide the sin offerings,[d] grain offerings, burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to make atonement for the Israelites.(E)

18 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In the first month(F) on the first day you are to take a young bull without defect(G) and purify the sanctuary.(H) 19 The priest is to take some of the blood of the sin offering and put it on the doorposts of the temple, on the four corners of the upper ledge(I) of the altar(J) and on the gateposts of the inner court. 20 You are to do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins unintentionally(K) or through ignorance; so you are to make atonement for the temple.

21 “‘In the first month on the fourteenth day you are to observe the Passover,(L) a festival lasting seven days, during which you shall eat bread made without yeast. 22 On that day the prince is to provide a bull as a sin offering for himself and for all the people of the land.(M) 23 Every day during the seven days of the festival he is to provide seven bulls and seven rams(N) without defect as a burnt offering to the Lord, and a male goat for a sin offering.(O) 24 He is to provide as a grain offering(P) an ephah for each bull and an ephah for each ram, along with a hin[e] of olive oil for each ephah.(Q)

25 “‘During the seven days of the festival,(R) which begins in the seventh month on the fifteenth day, he is to make the same provision for sin offerings, burnt offerings, grain offerings and oil.(S)

46 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: The gate of the inner court(T) facing east(U) is to be shut on the six working days, but on the Sabbath day and on the day of the New Moon(V) it is to be opened. The prince is to enter from the outside through the portico(W) of the gateway and stand by the gatepost. The priests are to sacrifice his burnt offering(X) and his fellowship offerings. He is to bow down in worship at the threshold of the gateway and then go out, but the gate will not be shut until evening.(Y) On the Sabbaths(Z) and New Moons the people of the land are to worship in the presence of the Lord at the entrance of that gateway.(AA) The burnt offering the prince brings to the Lord on the Sabbath day is to be six male lambs and a ram, all without defect. The grain offering given with the ram is to be an ephah,[f] and the grain offering with the lambs is to be as much as he pleases, along with a hin[g] of olive oil for each ephah.(AB) On the day of the New Moon(AC) he is to offer a young bull, six lambs and a ram, all without defect.(AD) He is to provide as a grain offering one ephah with the bull, one ephah with the ram, and with the lambs as much as he wants to give, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(AE) When the prince enters, he is to go in through the portico(AF) of the gateway, and he is to come out the same way.(AG)

“‘When the people of the land come before the Lord at the appointed festivals,(AH) whoever enters by the north gate to worship is to go out the south gate; and whoever enters by the south gate is to go out the north gate. No one is to return through the gate by which they entered, but each is to go out the opposite gate. 10 The prince is to be among them, going in when they go in and going out when they go out.(AI) 11 At the feasts and the appointed festivals, the grain offering is to be an ephah with a bull, an ephah with a ram, and with the lambs as much as he pleases, along with a hin of oil for each ephah.(AJ)

12 “‘When the prince provides(AK) a freewill offering(AL) to the Lord—whether a burnt offering or fellowship offerings—the gate facing east is to be opened for him. He shall offer his burnt offering or his fellowship offerings as he does on the Sabbath day. Then he shall go out, and after he has gone out, the gate will be shut.(AM)

13 “‘Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning(AN) you shall provide it.(AO) 14 You are also to provide with it morning by morning a grain offering, consisting of a sixth of an ephah[h] with a third of a hin[i] of oil(AP) to moisten the flour. The presenting of this grain offering to the Lord is a lasting ordinance.(AQ) 15 So the lamb and the grain offering and the oil shall be provided morning by morning for a regular(AR) burnt offering.(AS)

16 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: If the prince makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his sons, it will also belong to his descendants; it is to be their property by inheritance.(AT) 17 If, however, he makes a gift from his inheritance to one of his servants, the servant may keep it until the year of freedom;(AU) then it will revert to the prince. His inheritance belongs to his sons only; it is theirs. 18 The prince must not take(AV) any of the inheritance(AW) of the people, driving them off their property. He is to give his sons their inheritance out of his own property, so that not one of my people will be separated from their property.’”

19 Then the man brought me through the entrance(AX) at the side of the gate to the sacred rooms facing north,(AY) which belonged to the priests, and showed me a place at the western end. 20 He said to me, “This is the place where the priests are to cook the guilt offering and the sin offering[j] and bake the grain offering, to avoid bringing them into the outer court and consecrating(AZ) the people.”(BA)

21 He then brought me to the outer court and led me around to its four corners, and I saw in each corner another court. 22 In the four corners of the outer court were enclosed[k] courts, forty cubits long and thirty cubits wide;[l] each of the courts in the four corners was the same size. 23 Around the inside of each of the four courts was a ledge of stone, with places for fire built all around under the ledge. 24 He said to me, “These are the kitchens where those who minister at the temple are to cook the sacrifices of the people.”
