Solomon Builds the Temple(A)

And (B)it came to pass in the four hundred and [a]eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of [b]Ziv, which is the second month, (C)that he began to build the house of the Lord. Now (D)the house which King Solomon built for the Lord, its length was sixty cubits, its width twenty, and its height thirty cubits. The vestibule in front of the [c]sanctuary of the house was [d]twenty cubits long across the width of the house, and the width of [e]the vestibule extended [f]ten cubits from the front of the house. And he made for the house (E)windows with beveled frames.

Against the wall of the [g]temple he built (F)chambers all around, against the walls of the temple, all around the sanctuary (G)and the [h]inner sanctuary. Thus he made side chambers all around it. The lowest chamber was five cubits wide, the middle was six cubits wide, and the third was seven cubits wide; for he made narrow ledges around the outside of the temple, so that the support beams would not be fastened into the walls of the [i]temple. And (H)the temple, when it was being built, was built with stone finished at the quarry, so that no hammer or chisel or any iron tool was heard in the temple while it was being built. The doorway for the [j]middle story was on the right side of the temple. They went up by stairs to the middle story, and from the middle to the third.

(I)So he built the [k]temple and finished it, and he paneled the temple with beams and boards of cedar. 10 And he built side chambers against the entire temple, each five cubits high; they were attached to the temple with cedar beams.

11 Then the word of the Lord came to Solomon, saying: 12 Concerning this [l]temple which you are building, (J)if you walk in My statutes, execute My judgments, keep all My commandments, and walk in them, then I will perform My [m]word with you, (K)which I spoke to your father David. 13 And (L)I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will not (M)forsake My people Israel.”

14 So Solomon built the temple and finished it. 15 And he built the inside walls of the temple with cedar boards; from the floor of the temple to the ceiling he paneled the inside with wood; and he covered the floor of the temple with planks of cypress. 16 Then he built the twenty-cubit room at the rear of the temple, from floor to ceiling, with cedar boards; he built it inside as the inner sanctuary, as the (N)Most Holy Place. 17 And in front of it the temple sanctuary was forty cubits long. 18 The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with ornamental buds and open flowers. All was cedar; there was no stone to be seen.

19 And he prepared the [n]inner sanctuary inside the temple, to set the ark of the covenant of the Lord there. 20 The inner sanctuary was twenty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and twenty cubits high. He overlaid it with pure gold, and overlaid the altar of cedar. 21 So Solomon overlaid the inside of the temple with pure gold. He stretched gold chains across the front of the inner sanctuary, and overlaid it with gold. 22 The whole temple he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the temple; also he overlaid with gold (O)the entire altar that was by the inner sanctuary.

23 Inside the inner sanctuary (P)he made two cherubim of olive wood, each ten cubits high. 24 One wing of the cherub was five cubits, and the other wing of the cherub five cubits: ten cubits from the tip of one wing to the tip of the other. 25 And the other cherub was ten cubits; both cherubim were of the same size and shape. 26 The height of one cherub was ten cubits, and so was the other cherub. 27 Then he set the cherubim inside the inner [o]room; and (Q)they stretched out the wings of the cherubim so that the wing of the one touched one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall. And their wings touched each other in the middle of the room. 28 Also he overlaid the cherubim with gold.

29 Then he carved all the walls of the temple all around, both the inner and outer sanctuaries, with carved (R)figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers. 30 And the floor of the temple he overlaid with gold, both the inner and outer sanctuaries.

31 For the entrance of the inner sanctuary he made doors of olive wood; the lintel and doorposts were [p]one-fifth of the wall. 32 The two doors were of olive wood; and he carved on them figures of cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers, and overlaid them with gold; and he spread gold on the cherubim and on the palm trees. 33 So for the door of the [q]sanctuary he also made doorposts of olive wood, [r]one-fourth of the wall. 34 And the two doors were of cypress wood; (S)two panels comprised one folding door, and two panels comprised the other folding door. 35 Then he carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers on them, and overlaid them with gold applied evenly on the carved work.

36 And he built the (T)inner court with three rows of hewn stone and a row of cedar beams.

37 (U)In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid, in the month of [s]Ziv. 38 And in the eleventh year, in the month of [t]Bul, which is the eighth month, the house was finished in all its details and according to all its plans. So he was (V)seven years in building it.

Solomon’s Other Buildings

But Solomon took (W)thirteen years to build his own house; so he finished all his house.

He also built the (X)House of the Forest of Lebanon; its length was [u]one hundred cubits, its width [v]fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits, with four rows of cedar pillars, and cedar beams on the pillars. And it was paneled with cedar above the beams that were on forty-five pillars, fifteen to a row. There were windows with beveled frames in three rows, and window was opposite window in three tiers. And all the doorways and doorposts had rectangular frames; and window was opposite window in three tiers.

He also made the Hall of Pillars: its length was fifty cubits, and its width thirty cubits; and in front of them was a portico with pillars, and a canopy was in front of them.

Then he made a hall for the throne, the Hall of Judgment, where he might judge; and it was paneled with cedar from floor to [w]ceiling.

And the house where he dwelt had another court inside the hall, of like workmanship. Solomon also made a house like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, (Y)whom he had taken as wife.

All these were of costly stones cut to size, trimmed with saws, inside and out, from the foundation to the eaves, and also on the outside to the great court. 10 The foundation was of costly stones, large stones, some ten cubits and some eight cubits. 11 And above were costly stones, hewn to size, and cedar wood. 12 The great court was enclosed with three rows of hewn stones and a row of cedar beams. So were the (Z)inner court of the house of the Lord (AA)and the vestibule of the temple.

Hiram the Craftsman

13 Now King Solomon sent and brought [x]Huram from Tyre. 14 (AB)He was the son of a widow from the tribe of Naphtali, and (AC)his father was a man of Tyre, a bronze worker; (AD)he was filled with wisdom and understanding and skill in working with all kinds of bronze work. So he came to King Solomon and did all his work.

The Bronze Pillars for the Temple(AE)

15 And he [y]cast (AF)two pillars of bronze, each one eighteen cubits high, and a line of twelve cubits measured the circumference of each. 16 Then he made two capitals of cast bronze, to set on the tops of the pillars. The height of one capital was five cubits, and the height of the other capital was five cubits. 17 He made a lattice network, with wreaths of chainwork, for the capitals which were on top of the pillars: seven chains for one capital and seven for the other capital. 18 So he made the pillars, and two rows of pomegranates above the network all around to cover the capitals that were on top; and thus he did for the other capital.

19 The capitals which were on top of the pillars in the hall were in the shape of lilies, four cubits. 20 The capitals on the two pillars also had pomegranates above, by the convex surface which was next to the network; and there were (AG)two hundred such pomegranates in rows on each of the capitals all around.

21 (AH)Then he set up the pillars by the vestibule of the temple; he set up the pillar on the right and called its name [z]Jachin, and he set up the pillar on the left and called its name [aa]Boaz. 22 The tops of the pillars were in the shape of lilies. So the work of the pillars was finished.

The Sea and the Oxen

23 And he made (AI)the Sea of cast bronze, ten cubits from one brim to the other; it was completely round. Its height was five cubits, and a line of thirty cubits measured its circumference.

24 Below its brim were ornamental buds encircling it all around, ten to a cubit, (AJ)all the way around the Sea. The ornamental buds were cast in two rows when it was cast. 25 It stood on (AK)twelve oxen: three looking toward the north, three looking toward the west, three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east; the Sea was set upon them, and all their back parts pointed inward. 26 It was a handbreadth thick; and its brim was shaped like the brim of a cup, like a lily blossom. It contained [ab]two thousand baths.

The Carts and the Lavers

27 He also made ten [ac]carts of bronze; four cubits was the length of each cart, four cubits its width, and three cubits its height. 28 And this was the design of the carts: They had panels, and the panels were between frames; 29 on the panels that were between the frames were lions, oxen, and cherubim. And on the frames was a pedestal on top. Below the lions and oxen were wreaths of plaited work. 30 Every cart had four bronze wheels and axles of bronze, and its four feet had supports. Under the laver were supports of cast bronze beside each wreath. 31 Its opening inside the crown at the top was one cubit in diameter; and the opening was round, shaped like a pedestal, one and a half cubits in outside diameter; and also on the opening were engravings, but the panels were square, not round. 32 Under the panels were the four wheels, and the axles of the wheels were joined to the cart. The height of a wheel was one and a half cubits. 33 The workmanship of the wheels was like the workmanship of a chariot wheel; their axle pins, their rims, their spokes, and their hubs were all of cast bronze. 34 And there were four supports at the four corners of each cart; its supports were part of the cart itself. 35 On the top of the cart, at the height of half a cubit, it was perfectly round. And on the top of the cart, its flanges and its panels were of the same casting. 36 On the plates of its flanges and on its panels he engraved cherubim, lions, and palm trees, wherever there was a clear space on each, with wreaths all around. 37 Thus he made the ten carts. All of them were of [ad]the same mold, one measure, and one shape.

38 Then (AL)he made ten lavers of bronze; each laver contained [ae]forty baths, and each laver was four cubits. On each of the ten carts was a laver. 39 And he put five carts on the right side of the house, and five on the left side of the house. He set the Sea on the right side of the house, toward the southeast.

Furnishings of the Temple(AM)

40 (AN)Huram[af] made the lavers and the shovels and the bowls. So Huram finished doing all the work that he was to do for King Solomon for the house of the Lord: 41 the two pillars, the two bowl-shaped capitals that were on top of the two pillars; the two (AO)networks covering the two bowl-shaped capitals which were on top of the pillars; 42 (AP)four hundred pomegranates for the two networks (two rows of pomegranates for each network, to cover the two bowl-shaped capitals that were on top of the pillars); 43 the ten carts, and ten lavers on the carts; 44 one Sea, and twelve oxen under the Sea; 45 (AQ)the pots, the shovels, and the bowls.

All these articles which [ag]Huram made for King Solomon for the house of the Lord were of burnished bronze. 46 (AR)In the plain of Jordan the king had them cast in clay molds, between (AS)Succoth and (AT)Zaretan. 47 And Solomon did not weigh all the articles, because there were so many; the weight of the bronze was not (AU)determined.

48 Thus Solomon had all the furnishings made for the house of the Lord: (AV)the altar of gold, and (AW)the table of gold on which was (AX)the showbread; 49 the lampstands of pure gold, five on the right side and five on the left in front of the inner sanctuary, with the flowers and the lamps and the wick-trimmers of gold; 50 the basins, the trimmers, the bowls, the ladles, and the [ah]censers of pure gold; and the hinges of gold, both for the doors of the inner room (the Most Holy Place) and for the doors of the main hall of the temple.

51 So all the work that King Solomon had done for the house of the Lord was finished; and Solomon brought in the things (AY)which his father David had dedicated: the silver and the gold and the furnishings. He put them in the treasuries of the house of the Lord.

The Ark Brought into the Temple(AZ)

Now (BA)Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel, to King Solomon in Jerusalem, (BB)that they might bring (BC)up the ark of the covenant of the Lord from the City of David, which is Zion. Therefore all the men of Israel assembled with King Solomon at the (BD)feast in the month of [ai]Ethanim, which is the seventh month. So all the elders of Israel came, (BE)and the priests took up the ark. Then they brought up the ark of the Lord, (BF)the [aj]tabernacle of meeting, and all the holy furnishings that were in the tabernacle. The priests and the Levites brought them up. Also King Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel who were assembled with him, were with him before the ark, (BG)sacrificing sheep and oxen that could not be counted or numbered for multitude. Then the priests (BH)brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord to (BI)its place, into the inner sanctuary of the temple, to the Most Holy Place, (BJ)under the wings of the cherubim. For the cherubim spread their two wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim overshadowed the ark and its poles. The poles (BK)extended so that the [ak]ends of the poles could be seen from the holy place, in front of the inner sanctuary; but they could not be seen from outside. And they are there to this day. (BL)Nothing was in the ark (BM)except the two tablets of stone which Moses (BN)put there at Horeb, (BO)when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.

10 And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that the cloud (BP)filled the house of the Lord, 11 so that the priests could not continue ministering because of the cloud; for the (BQ)glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord.

12 (BR)Then Solomon spoke:

“The Lord said He would dwell (BS)in the dark cloud.
13 (BT)I have surely built You an exalted house,
(BU)And a place for You to dwell in forever.”

Solomon’s Speech at Completion of the Work(BV)

14 Then the king turned around and (BW)blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing. 15 And he said: (BX)“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who (BY)spoke with His mouth to my father David, and with His hand has fulfilled it, saying, 16 ‘Since the day that I brought My people Israel out of Egypt, I have chosen no city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house, that (BZ)My name might be there; but I chose (CA)David to be over My people Israel.’ 17 Now (CB)it was in the heart of my father David to build a [al]temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel. 18 (CC)But the Lord said to my father David, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a temple for My name, you did well that it was in your heart. 19 Nevertheless (CD)you shall not build the temple, but your son who will come from your body, he shall build the temple for My name.’ 20 So the Lord has fulfilled His word which He spoke; and I have [am]filled the position of my father David, and sit on the throne of Israel, (CE)as the Lord promised; and I have built a temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel. 21 And there I have made a place for the ark, in which is (CF)the covenant of the Lord which He made with our fathers, when He brought them out of the land of Egypt.”

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication(CG)

22 Then Solomon stood before (CH)the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and (CI)spread out his hands toward heaven; 23 and he said: “Lord God of Israel, (CJ)there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like You, (CK)who keep Your covenant and mercy with Your servants who (CL)walk before You with all their hearts. 24 You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day. 25 Therefore, Lord God of Israel, now keep what You promised Your servant David my father, saying, (CM)‘You shall not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne of Israel, only if your sons take heed to their way, that they walk before Me as you have walked before Me.’ 26 (CN)And now I pray, O God of Israel, let Your word come true, which You have spoken to Your servant David my father.

27 “But (CO)will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the (CP)heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! 28 Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You today: 29 that Your eyes may be open toward this [an]temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, (CQ)‘My name shall be (CR)there,’ that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes (CS)toward this place. 30 (CT)And may You hear the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear in heaven Your dwelling place; and when You hear, forgive.

31 “When anyone sins against his neighbor, and is forced to take (CU)an oath, and comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this temple, 32 then hear in heaven, and act, and judge Your servants, (CV)condemning the wicked, bringing his way on his head, and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.

33 (CW)“When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and (CX)when they turn back to You and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication to You in this temple, 34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their (CY)fathers.

35 (CZ)“When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them, 36 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, that You may (DA)teach them (DB)the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people as an inheritance.

37 (DC)“When there is famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; when their enemy besieges them in the land of their [ao]cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is; 38 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the plague of his own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this temple: 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone (DD)know the hearts of all the sons of men), 40 (DE)that they may fear You all the days that they live in the land which You gave to our fathers.

41 “Moreover, concerning a foreigner, who is not of Your people Israel, but has come from a far country for Your name’s sake 42 (for they will hear of Your great name and Your (DF)strong hand and Your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this temple, 43 hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, (DG)that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and (DH)fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this temple which I have built is called by Your name.

44 “When Your people go out to battle against their enemy, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the Lord toward the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name, 45 then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [ap]cause.

46 “When they sin against You (DI)(for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them captive (DJ)to the land of the enemy, far or near; 47 (DK)yet when they [aq]come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of those who took them captive, (DL)saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness’; 48 and when they (DM)return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who led them away captive, and (DN)pray to You toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name: 49 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [ar]cause, 50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You, and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You; and (DO)grant them compassion before those who took them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51 (for (DP)they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out of Egypt, (DQ)out of the iron furnace), 52 (DR)that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your servant and the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. 53 For You separated them from among all the peoples of the earth to be Your inheritance, (DS)as You spoke by Your servant Moses, when You brought our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord God.”

Solomon Blesses the Assembly(DT)

54 (DU)And so it was, when Solomon had finished praying all this prayer and supplication to the Lord, that he arose from before the altar of the Lord, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven. 55 Then he stood (DV)and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying: 56 “Blessed be the Lord, who has given (DW)rest[as] to His people Israel, according to all that He promised. (DX)There has not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised through His servant Moses. 57 May the Lord our God be with us, as He was with our fathers. (DY)May He not leave us nor forsake us, 58 that He may (DZ)incline our hearts to Himself, to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commandments and His statutes and His judgments, which He commanded our fathers. 59 And may these words of mine, with which I have made supplication before the Lord, be near the Lord our God day and night, that He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day may require, 60 (EA)that all the peoples of the earth may know that (EB)the Lord is God; there is no other. 61 Let your (EC)heart therefore be [at]loyal to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and keep His commandments, as at this day.”

Solomon Dedicates the Temple(ED)

62 Then (EE)the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices before the Lord. 63 And Solomon offered a sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to the Lord, twenty-two thousand bulls and one hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the Lord. 64 On (EF)the same day the king consecrated the middle of the court that was in front of the house of the Lord; for there he offered burnt offerings, grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the (EG)bronze altar that was before the Lord was too small to receive the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.

65 At that time Solomon held (EH)a feast, and all Israel with him, a great assembly from (EI)the entrance of Hamath to (EJ)the Brook of Egypt, before the Lord our God, (EK)seven days and seven more days—fourteen days. 66 (EL)On the eighth day he sent the people away; and they [au]blessed the king, and went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the good that the Lord had done for His servant David, and for Israel His people.

God’s Second Appearance to Solomon(EM)

And (EN)it came to pass, when Solomon had finished building the house of the Lord (EO)and the king’s house, and (EP)all Solomon’s desire which he wanted to do, that the Lord appeared to Solomon the second time, (EQ)as He had appeared to him at Gibeon. And the Lord said to him: (ER)“I have heard your prayer and your supplication that you have made before Me; I have consecrated this house which you have built (ES)to put My name there forever, (ET)and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually. Now if you (EU)walk before Me (EV)as your father David walked, in integrity of heart and in uprightness, to do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you (EW)keep My statutes and My judgments, then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, (EX)as I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’ (EY)But if you or your sons at all [av]turn from following Me, and do not keep My commandments and My statutes which I have set before you, but go and serve other gods and worship them, (EZ)then I will [aw]cut off Israel from the land which I have given them; and this house which I have consecrated (FA)for My name I will cast out of My sight. (FB)Israel will be a proverb and a byword among all peoples. And as for (FC)this house, which is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and will hiss, and say, (FD)‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and to this house?’ Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the Lord their God, who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore the Lord has brought all this (FE)calamity on them.’ ”

Solomon and Hiram Exchange Gifts

10 Now (FF)it happened at the end of twenty years, when Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the Lord and the king’s house 11 (FG)(Hiram the king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and cypress and gold, as much as he desired), that King Solomon then gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. 12 Then Hiram went from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him, but they did not please him. 13 So he said, “What kind of cities are these which you have given me, my brother?” (FH)And he called them the land of [ax]Cabul, as they are to this day. 14 Then Hiram sent the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold.

Solomon’s Additional Achievements(FI)

15 And this is the reason for (FJ)the labor force which King Solomon raised: to build the house of the Lord, his own house, [ay]the (FK)Millo, the wall of Jerusalem, (FL)Hazor, (FM)Megiddo, and (FN)Gezer. 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had gone up and taken Gezer and burned it with fire, (FO)had killed the Canaanites who dwelt in the city, and had given it as a dowry to his daughter, Solomon’s wife.) 17 And Solomon built Gezer, Lower (FP)Beth Horon, 18 (FQ)Baalath, and Tadmor in the wilderness, in the land of Judah, 19 all the storage cities that Solomon had, cities for (FR)his chariots and cities for his (FS)cavalry, and whatever Solomon (FT)desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

20 (FU)All the people who were left of the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not of the children of Israel— 21 that is, their descendants (FV)who were left in the land after them, (FW)whom the children of Israel had not been able to destroy completely—(FX)from these Solomon raised (FY)forced labor, as it is to this day. 22 But of the children of Israel Solomon (FZ)made no forced laborers, because they were men of war and his servants: his officers, his captains, commanders of his chariots, and his cavalry.

23 Others were chiefs of the officials who were over Solomon’s work: (GA)five hundred and fifty, who ruled over the people who did the work.

24 But (GB)Pharaoh’s daughter came up from the City of David to (GC)her house which [az]Solomon had built for her. (GD)Then he built the Millo.

25 (GE)Now three times a year Solomon offered burnt offerings and peace offerings on the altar which he had built for the Lord, and he burned incense with them on the altar that was before the Lord. So he finished the temple.

26 (GF)King Solomon also built a fleet of ships at (GG)Ezion Geber, which is near [ba]Elath on the shore of the Red Sea, in the land of Edom. 27 (GH)Then Hiram sent his servants with the fleet, seamen who knew the sea, to work with the servants of Solomon. 28 And they went to (GI)Ophir, and acquired four hundred and twenty talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba’s Praise of Solomon(GJ)

10 Now when the (GK)queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came (GL)to test him with hard questions. She came to Jerusalem with a very great [bb]retinue, with camels that bore spices, very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart. So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing [bc]so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her. And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, (GM)and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit in her. Then she said to the king: “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. However I did not believe the words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard. (GN)Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! (GO)Blessed be the Lord your God, who (GP)delighted in you, setting you on the throne of Israel! Because the Lord has loved Israel forever, therefore He made you king, (GQ)to do justice and righteousness.”

10 Then she (GR)gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great quantity, and precious stones. There never again came such abundance of spices as the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. 11 (GS)Also, the ships of Hiram, which brought gold from Ophir, brought great quantities of [bd]almug wood and precious stones from Ophir. 12 (GT)And the king made [be]steps of the almug wood for the house of the Lord and for the king’s house, also harps and stringed instruments for singers. There never again came such (GU)almug wood, nor has the like been seen to this day.

13 Now King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired, whatever she asked, besides what Solomon had given her according to the royal generosity. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

Solomon’s Great Wealth

14 The weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold, 15 besides that from the (GV)traveling merchants, from the income of traders, (GW)from all the kings of Arabia, and from the governors of the country.

16 And King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels of gold went into each shield. 17 He also made (GX)three hundred shields of hammered gold; three minas of gold went into each shield. The king put them in the (GY)House of the Forest of Lebanon.

18 (GZ)Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold. 19 The throne had six steps, and the top of the throne was round at the back; there were armrests on either side of the place of the seat, and two lions stood beside the armrests. 20 Twelve lions stood there, one on each side of the six steps; nothing like this had been made for any other kingdom.

21 (HA)All King Solomon’s drinking vessels were gold, and all the vessels of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Not one was silver, for this was accounted as nothing in the days of Solomon. 22 For the king had (HB)merchant[bf] ships at sea with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the merchant (HC)ships came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and [bg]monkeys. 23 So (HD)King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.

24 Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. 25 Each man brought his present: articles of silver and gold, garments, armor, spices, horses, and mules, at a set rate year by year.

26 (HE)And Solomon (HF)gathered chariots and horsemen; he had one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he [bh]stationed in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem. 27 (HG)The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees as abundant as the sycamores which are in the lowland.

28 (HH)Also Solomon had horses imported from Egypt and Keveh; the king’s merchants bought them in Keveh at the current price. 29 Now a chariot that was imported from Egypt cost six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse one hundred and fifty; (HI)and [bi]thus, through their agents, they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.

Solomon’s Heart Turns from the Lord

11 But (HJ)King Solomon loved (HK)many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites— from the nations of whom the Lord had said to the children of Israel, (HL)“You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. For it was so, when Solomon was old, (HM)that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his (HN)heart was not [bj]loyal to the Lord his God, (HO)as was the heart of his father David. For Solomon went after (HP)Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after (HQ)Milcom[bk] the abomination of the (HR)Ammonites. Solomon did evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not fully follow the Lord, as did his father David. (HS)Then Solomon built a [bl]high place for (HT)Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on (HU)the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.

So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel, (HV)who had appeared to him twice, 10 and (HW)had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he did not keep what the Lord had commanded. 11 Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Because you have done this, and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, (HX)I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your (HY)servant. 12 Nevertheless I will not do it in your days, for the sake of your father David; I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 (HZ)However I will not tear away the whole kingdom; I will give (IA)one tribe to your son (IB)for the sake of My servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem (IC)which I have chosen.”

Adversaries of Solomon

14 Now the Lord (ID)raised up an adversary against Solomon, Hadad the Edomite; he was a descendant of the king in Edom. 15 (IE)For it happened, when David was in Edom, and Joab the commander of the army had gone up to bury the slain, (IF)after he had killed every male in Edom 16 (because for six months Joab remained there with all Israel, until he had cut down every male in Edom), 17 that Hadad fled to go to Egypt, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him. Hadad was still a little child. 18 Then they arose from Midian and came to Paran; and they took men with them from Paran and came to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave him a house, apportioned food for him, and gave him land. 19 And Hadad found great favor in the sight of Pharaoh, so that he gave him as wife the sister of his own wife, that is, the sister of Queen Tahpenes. 20 Then the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh’s house. And Genubath was in Pharaoh’s household among the sons of Pharaoh.

21 (IG)So when Hadad heard in Egypt that David [bm]rested with his fathers, and that Joab the commander of the army was dead, Hadad said to Pharaoh, [bn]“Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.”

22 Then Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me, that suddenly you seek to go to your own country?”

So he answered, “Nothing, but do let me go anyway.”

23 And God raised up another adversary against him, Rezon the son of Eliadah, who had fled from his lord, (IH)Hadadezer king of Zobah. 24 So he gathered men to him and became captain over a band of raiders, (II)when David killed those of Zobah. And they went to Damascus and dwelt there, and reigned in Damascus. 25 He was an adversary of Israel all the days of Solomon (besides the trouble that Hadad caused); and he abhorred Israel, and reigned over Syria.

Jeroboam’s Rebellion

26 Then Solomon’s servant, (IJ)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, an Ephraimite from Zereda, whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, (IK)also (IL)rebelled against the king.

27 And this is what caused him to rebel against the king: (IM)Solomon had built the Millo and [bo]repaired the damages to the City of David his father. 28 The man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor; and Solomon, seeing that the young man was (IN)industrious, made him the officer over all the labor force of the house of Joseph.

29 Now it happened at that time, when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem, that the prophet (IO)Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the way; and he had clothed himself with a new garment, and the two were alone in the field. 30 Then Ahijah took hold of the new garment that was on him, and (IP)tore it into twelve pieces. 31 And he said to Jeroboam, “Take for yourself ten pieces, for (IQ)thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to you 32 (but he shall have one tribe for the sake of My servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel), 33 (IR)because [bp]they have forsaken Me, and worshiped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the people of Ammon, and have not walked in My ways to do what is right in My eyes and keep My statutes and My judgments, as did his father David. 34 However I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of My servant David, whom I chose because he kept My commandments and My statutes. 35 But (IS)I will take the kingdom out of his son’s hand and give it to you—ten tribes. 36 And to his son I will give one tribe, that (IT)My servant David may always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen for Myself, to put My name there. 37 So I will take you, and you shall reign over all your heart desires, and you shall be king over Israel. 38 Then it shall be, if you heed all that I command you, walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight, to keep My statutes and My commandments, as My servant David did, then (IU)I will be with you and (IV)build for you an enduring house, as I built for David, and will give Israel to you. 39 And I will afflict the descendants of David because of this, but not forever.’ ”

40 Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to (IW)Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

Death of Solomon(IX)

41 Now (IY)the rest of the acts of Solomon, all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon? 42 (IZ)And the period that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years. 43 (JA)Then Solomon [bq]rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his (JB)place.

Solomon Builds the Temple(A)

Now (B)Solomon began to build the house of the Lord at (C)Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where [a]the Lord had appeared to his father David, at the place that David had prepared on the threshing floor of (D)Ornan[b] the Jebusite. And he began to build on the second day of the second month in the fourth year of his reign.

This is the foundation (E)which Solomon laid for building the house of God: The length was sixty cubits (by cubits according to the former measure) and the width twenty cubits. And the (F)vestibule that was in front of [c]the sanctuary was twenty cubits long across the width of the house, and the height was [d]one hundred and twenty. He overlaid the inside with pure gold. (G)The larger [e]room he (H)paneled with cypress which he overlaid with fine gold, and he carved palm trees and chainwork on it. And he decorated the house with precious stones for beauty, and the gold was gold from Parvaim. He also overlaid the house—the beams and doorposts, its walls and doors—with gold; and he carved cherubim on the walls.

And he made the (I)Most Holy Place. Its length was according to the width of the house, twenty cubits, and its width twenty cubits. He overlaid it with six hundred talents of fine gold. The weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold; and he overlaid the upper (J)area with gold. 10 (K)In the Most Holy Place he made two cherubim, fashioned by carving, and overlaid them with gold. 11 The wings of the cherubim were twenty cubits in overall length: one wing of the one cherub was five cubits, touching the wall of the room, and the other wing was five cubits, touching the wing of the other cherub; 12 one wing of the other cherub was five cubits, touching the wall of the room, and the other wing also was five cubits, touching the wing of the other cherub. 13 The wings of these cherubim spanned twenty cubits overall. They stood on their feet, and they faced inward. 14 And he made the (L)veil of blue, purple, crimson, and fine linen, and wove cherubim into it.

15 Also he made in front of the [f]temple (M)two pillars [g]thirty-five cubits [h]high, and the capital that was on the top of each of them was five cubits. 16 He made wreaths of chainwork, as in the inner sanctuary, and put them on top of the pillars; and he made (N)one hundred pomegranates, and put them on the wreaths of chainwork. 17 Then he (O)set up the pillars before the temple, one on the right hand and the other on the left; he called the name of the one on the right hand [i]Jachin, and the name of the one on the left [j]Boaz.

Furnishings of the Temple(P)

Moreover he made (Q)a bronze altar: twenty cubits was its length, twenty cubits its width, and ten cubits its height.

(R)Then he made the [k]Sea of cast bronze, ten cubits from one brim to the other; it was completely round. Its height was five cubits, and a line of thirty cubits measured its circumference. (S)And under it was the likeness of oxen encircling it all around, ten to a cubit, all the way around the Sea. The oxen were cast in two rows, when it was cast. It stood on twelve (T)oxen: three looking toward the north, three looking toward the west, three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east; the Sea was set upon them, and all their back parts pointed inward. It was a handbreadth thick; and its brim was shaped like the brim of a cup, like a lily blossom. It contained [l]three thousand baths.

He also made (U)ten lavers, and put five on the right side and five on the left, to wash in them; such things as they offered for the burnt offering they would wash in them, but the [m]Sea was for the (V)priests to wash in. (W)And he made ten lampstands of gold (X)according to their design, and set them in the temple, five on the right side and five on the left. (Y)He also made ten tables, and placed them in the temple, five on the right side and five on the left. And he made one hundred (Z)bowls of gold.

Furthermore (AA)he made the court of the priests, and the (AB)great court and doors for the court; and he overlaid these doors with bronze. 10 (AC)He set the Sea on the right side, toward the southeast.

11 Then (AD)Huram made the pots and the shovels and the bowls. So Huram finished doing the work that he was to do for King Solomon for the house of God: 12 the two pillars and (AE)the bowl-shaped capitals that were on top of the two pillars; the two networks covering the two bowl-shaped capitals which were on top of the pillars; 13 (AF)four hundred pomegranates for the two networks (two rows of pomegranates for each network, to cover the two bowl-shaped capitals that were on the pillars); 14 he also made (AG)carts and the lavers on the carts; 15 one Sea and twelve oxen under it; 16 also the pots, the shovels, the forks—and all their articles (AH)Huram his [n]master craftsman made of burnished bronze for King Solomon for the house of the Lord.

17 In the plain of Jordan the king had them cast in clay molds, between Succoth and [o]Zeredah. 18 (AI)And Solomon had all these articles made in such great abundance that the weight of the bronze was not determined.

19 Thus (AJ)Solomon had all the furnishings made for the house of God: the altar of gold and the tables on which was (AK)the showbread; 20 the lampstands with their lamps of pure gold, to burn (AL)in the prescribed manner in front of the inner sanctuary, 21 with (AM)the flowers and the lamps and the wick-trimmers of gold, of purest gold; 22 the trimmers, the bowls, the ladles, and the censers of pure gold. As for the entry of the [p]sanctuary, its inner doors to the Most Holy Place, and the doors of the main hall of the temple, were gold.

The Ark Brought into the Temple

So (AN)all the work that Solomon had done for the house of the Lord was finished; and Solomon brought in the things which his father David had dedicated: the silver and the gold and all the furnishings. And he put them in the treasuries of the house of God.

The Ark Brought into the Temple(AO)

(AP)Now Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel, in Jerusalem, that they might bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord up (AQ)from the City of David, which is Zion. (AR)Therefore all the men of Israel assembled with the king (AS)at the feast, which was in the seventh month. So all the elders of Israel came, and the (AT)Levites took up the ark. Then they brought up the ark, the tabernacle of meeting, and all the holy furnishings that were in the tabernacle. The priests and the Levites brought them up. Also King Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel who were assembled with him before the ark, were sacrificing sheep and oxen that could not be counted or numbered for multitude. Then the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the Lord to its place, into the (AU)inner sanctuary of the [q]temple, to the Most Holy Place, under the wings of the cherubim. For the cherubim spread their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubim overshadowed the ark and its poles. The poles extended so that the ends of the (AV)poles of the ark could be seen from the holy place, in front of the inner sanctuary; but they could not be seen from outside. And [r]they are there to this day. 10 Nothing was in the ark except the two tablets which Moses (AW)put there at Horeb, [s]when the Lord made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they had come out of Egypt.

11 And it came to pass when the priests came out of the Most Holy Place (for all the priests who were present had [t]sanctified themselves, without keeping to their (AX)divisions), 12 (AY)and the Levites who were the singers, all those of Asaph and Heman and Jeduthun, with their sons and their brethren, stood at the east end of the altar, clothed in white linen, having cymbals, stringed instruments and harps, (AZ)and with them one hundred and twenty priests sounding with trumpets— 13 indeed it came to pass, when the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the Lord, and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and praised the Lord, saying:

(BA)For He is good,
For His mercy endures forever,”

that the house, the house of the Lord, was filled with a cloud, 14 so that the priests could not [u]continue ministering because of the cloud; (BB)for the glory of the Lord filled the house of God.

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication

Then (BC)Solomon spoke:

“The Lord said He would dwell in the (BD)dark cloud.
I have surely built You an exalted house,
And (BE)a place for You to dwell in forever.”

Solomon’s Speech upon Completion of the Work(BF)

Then the king turned around and (BG)blessed the whole assembly of Israel, while all the assembly of Israel was standing. And he said: “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who has fulfilled with His hands what He spoke with His mouth to my father David, (BH)saying, ‘Since the day that I brought My people out of the land of Egypt, I have chosen no city from any tribe of Israel in which to build a house, that My name might be there, nor did I choose any man to be a ruler over My people Israel. (BI)Yet I have chosen Jerusalem, that My name may be there, and I (BJ)have chosen David to be over My people Israel.’ Now (BK)it was in the heart of my father David to build a [v]temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel. But the Lord said to my father David, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a temple for My name, you did well in that it was in your heart. Nevertheless you shall not build the temple, but your son who will come from your body, he shall build the temple for My (BL)name.’ 10 So the Lord has fulfilled His word which He spoke, and I have filled the position of my father David, and (BM)sit on the throne of Israel, as the Lord promised; and I have built the temple for the name of the Lord God of Israel. 11 And there I have put the ark, (BN)in which is the covenant of the Lord which He made with the children of Israel.”

Solomon’s Prayer of Dedication(BO)

12 (BP)Then [w]Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands 13 (for Solomon had made a bronze platform five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court; and he stood on it, knelt down on his knees before all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands toward heaven); 14 and he said: “Lord God of Israel, (BQ)there is no God in heaven or on earth like You, who keep Your (BR)covenant and mercy with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts. 15 (BS)You have kept what You promised Your servant David my father; You have both spoken with Your mouth and fulfilled it with Your hand, as it is this day. 16 Therefore, Lord God of Israel, now keep what You promised Your servant David my father, saying, (BT)‘You shall not fail to have a man sit before Me on the throne of Israel, (BU)only if your sons take heed to their way, that they walk in My law as you have walked before Me.’ 17 And now, O Lord God of Israel, let Your word come true, which You have spoken to Your servant David.

18 “But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? (BV)Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this [x]temple which I have built! 19 Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You: 20 that Your eyes may be (BW)open toward this temple day and night, toward the place where You said You would put Your name, that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes (BX)toward this place. 21 And may You hear the supplications of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and when You hear, (BY)forgive.

22 “If anyone sins against his neighbor, and is forced to take an (BZ)oath, and comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this temple, 23 then hear from heaven, and act, and judge Your servants, bringing retribution on the wicked by bringing his way on his own head, and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his (CA)righteousness.

24 “Or if Your people Israel are defeated before an (CB)enemy because they have sinned against You, and return and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication before You in this temple, 25 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to them and their fathers.

26 “When the (CC)heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them, 27 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, that You may teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people as an inheritance.

28 “When there (CD)is famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; when their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever (CE)sickness there is; 29 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows his own burden and his own grief, and spreads out his hands to this temple: 30 then hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone (CF)know the (CG)hearts of the sons of men), 31 that they may fear You, to walk in Your ways as long as they live in the land which You gave to our fathers.

32 “Moreover, concerning a foreigner, (CH)who is not of Your people Israel, but has come from a far country for the sake of Your great name and Your mighty hand and Your outstretched arm, when they come and pray in this temple; 33 then hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that [y]this temple which I have built is called by Your name.

34 “When Your people go out to battle against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to You toward this city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name, 35 then hear from heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

36 “When they sin against You (for there is (CI)no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them (CJ)captive to a land far or near; 37 yet when they [z]come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of their captivity, saying, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, and have committed wickedness’; 38 and when they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have been carried captive, and pray toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the (CK)city which You have chosen, and toward the temple which I have built for Your name: 39 then hear from heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive Your people who have sinned against You. 40 Now, my God, I pray, let Your eyes be (CL)open and let Your ears be attentive to the prayer made in this place.

41 “Now(CM) therefore,
Arise, O Lord God, to Your (CN)resting place,
You and the ark of Your strength.
Let Your priests, O Lord God, be clothed with salvation,
And let Your saints (CO)rejoice in goodness.

42 “O Lord God, do not turn away the face of Your Anointed;
(CP)Remember the mercies of Your servant David.”

Solomon Dedicates the Temple(CQ)

When (CR)Solomon had finished praying, (CS)fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and (CT)the glory of the Lord filled the [aa]temple. (CU)And the priests could not enter the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord had filled the Lord’s house. When all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the glory of the Lord on the temple, they bowed their faces to the ground on the pavement, and worshiped and praised the Lord, saying:

(CV)“For He is good,
(CW)For His mercy endures forever.”

(CX)Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord. King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand bulls and one hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God. (CY)And the priests attended to their services; the Levites also with instruments of the music of the Lord, which King David had made to praise the Lord, saying, “For His mercy endures forever,” whenever David offered praise by their [ab]ministry. (CZ)The priests sounded trumpets opposite them, while all Israel stood.

Furthermore (DA)Solomon consecrated the middle of the court that was in front of the house of the Lord; for there he offered burnt offerings and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar which Solomon had made was not able to receive the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat.

(DB)At that time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great assembly (DC)from the entrance of Hamath to (DD)the[ac] Brook of Egypt. And on the eighth day they held a (DE)sacred assembly, for they observed the dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days. 10 (DF)On the twenty-third day of the seventh month he sent the people away to their tents, joyful and glad of heart for the good that the Lord had done for David, for Solomon, and for His people Israel. 11 Thus (DG)Solomon finished the house of the Lord and the king’s house; and Solomon successfully accomplished all that came into his heart to make in the house of the Lord and in his own house.

God’s Second Appearance to Solomon(DH)

12 Then the Lord (DI)appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, (DJ)and have chosen this (DK)place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. 13 (DL)When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, 14 if My people who are (DM)called by My name will (DN)humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, (DO)then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now (DP)My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. 16 For now (DQ)I have chosen and [ad]sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and [ae]My eyes and [af]My heart will be there perpetually. 17 (DR)As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My judgments, 18 then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, (DS)‘You shall not fail to have a man as ruler in Israel.’

19 (DT)“But if you turn away and forsake My statutes and My commandments which I have set before you, and go and serve other gods, and worship them, 20 (DU)then I will uproot them from My land which I have given them; and this house which I have [ag]sanctified for My name I will cast out of My sight, and will make it a proverb and a (DV)byword among all peoples.

21 “And as for (DW)this [ah]house, which [ai]is exalted, everyone who passes by it will be (DX)astonished and say, (DY)‘Why has the Lord done thus to this land and this house?’ 22 Then they will answer, ‘Because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and embraced other gods, and worshiped them and served them; therefore He has brought all this calamity on them.’ ”

Solomon’s Additional Achievements(DZ)

It (EA)came to pass at the end of (EB)twenty years, when Solomon had built the house of the Lord and his own house, that the cities which [aj]Hiram had given to Solomon, Solomon built them; and he settled the children of Israel there. And Solomon went to Hamath Zobah and seized it. (EC)He also built Tadmor in the wilderness, and all the storage cities which he built in (ED)Hamath. He built Upper Beth Horon and (EE)Lower Beth Horon, fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars, also Baalath and all the storage cities that Solomon had, and all the chariot cities and the cities of the cavalry, and all that Solomon (EF)desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

(EG)All the people who were left of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not of Israel— that is, their descendants who were left in the land after them, whom the children of Israel did not destroy—from these Solomon raised forced labor, as it is to this day. But Solomon did not make the children of Israel [ak]servants for his work. Some were men of war, captains of his officers, captains of his chariots, and his cavalry. 10 And others were chiefs of the officials of King Solomon: (EH)two hundred and fifty, who ruled over the people.

11 Now Solomon (EI)brought the daughter of Pharaoh up from the City of David to the house he had built for her, for he said, “My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel, because the places to which the ark of the Lord has come are holy.”

12 Then Solomon offered burnt offerings to the Lord on the altar of the Lord which he had built before the vestibule, 13 according to the (EJ)daily rate, offering according to the commandment of Moses, for the Sabbaths, the New Moons, and the (EK)three appointed yearly (EL)feasts—the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles. 14 And, according to the [al]order of David his father, he appointed the (EM)divisions of the priests for their service, (EN)the Levites for their duties (to praise and serve before the priests) as the duty of each day required, and the (EO)gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate; for so David the man of God had commanded. 15 They did not depart from the command of the king to the priests and Levites concerning any matter or concerning the (EP)treasuries.

16 Now all the work of Solomon was well-ordered [am]from the day of the foundation of the house of the Lord until it was finished. So the house of the Lord was completed.

17 Then Solomon went to (EQ)Ezion Geber and [an]Elath on the seacoast, in the land of Edom. 18 (ER)And Hiram sent him ships by the hand of his servants, and servants who knew the sea. They went with the servants of Solomon to (ES)Ophir, and acquired four hundred and fifty talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.

The Queen of Sheba’s Praise of Solomon(ET)

Now (EU)when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with hard questions, having a very great retinue, camels that bore spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart. So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for Solomon that he could not explain it to her. And when the queen of Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his (EV)cupbearers and their apparel, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the Lord, there was no more spirit in her.

Then she said to the king: “It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom. However I did not believe their words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half of the greatness of your wisdom was not told me. You exceed the fame of which I heard. Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom! Blessed be the Lord your God, who delighted in you, setting you on His throne to be king for the Lord your God! Because your God has (EW)loved Israel, to establish them forever, therefore He made you king over them, to do justice and righteousness.”

And she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great abundance, and precious stones; there never were any spices such as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

10 Also, the servants of Hiram and the servants of Solomon, (EX)who brought gold from Ophir, brought [ao]algum wood and precious stones. 11 And the king made walkways of the [ap]algum wood for the house of the Lord and for the king’s house, also harps and stringed instruments for singers; and there were none such as these seen before in the land of Judah.

12 Now King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all she desired, whatever she asked, much more than she had brought to the king. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

Solomon’s Great Wealth(EY)

13 (EZ)The weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold, 14 besides what the traveling merchants and traders brought. And all the kings of Arabia and governors of the country brought gold and silver to Solomon. 15 And King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels of hammered gold went into each shield. 16 He also made three hundred shields of hammered gold; [aq]three hundred shekels of gold went into each shield. The king put them in the (FA)House of the Forest of Lebanon.

17 Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold. 18 The throne had six steps, with a footstool of gold, which were fastened to the throne; there were [ar]armrests on either side of the place of the seat, and two lions stood beside the armrests. 19 Twelve lions stood there, one on each side of the six steps; nothing like this had been made for any other kingdom.

20 All King Solomon’s drinking vessels were gold, and all the vessels of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Not one was silver, for this was accounted as nothing in the days of Solomon. 21 For the king’s ships went to (FB)Tarshish with the servants of [as]Hiram. Once every three years the [at]merchant ships came, bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and [au]monkeys.

22 So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. 23 And all the kings of the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart. 24 Each man brought his present: articles of silver and gold, garments, (FC)armor, spices, horses, and mules, at a set rate year by year.

25 Solomon (FD)had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen whom he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king at Jerusalem.

26 (FE)So he reigned over all the kings (FF)from [av]the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. 27 (FG)The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees (FH)as abundant as the sycamores which are in the lowland. 28 (FI)And they brought horses to Solomon from Egypt and from all lands.

Death of Solomon(FJ)

29 (FK)Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the book of Nathan the prophet, in the prophecy of (FL)Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of (FM)Iddo the seer concerning Jeroboam the son of Nebat? 30 (FN)Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel forty years. 31 Then Solomon [aw]rested with his fathers, and was buried in the City of David his father. And Rehoboam his son reigned in his place.

A Song of Praise to the Sovereign Lord

97 The Lord (A)reigns;
Let the earth rejoice;
Let the multitude of [a]isles be glad!

(B)Clouds and darkness surround Him;
(C)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.
(D)A fire goes before Him,
And burns up His enemies round about.
(E)His lightnings light the world;
The earth sees and trembles.
(F)The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
(G)The heavens declare His righteousness,
And all the peoples see His glory.

(H)Let all be put to shame who serve carved images,
Who boast of idols.
(I)Worship Him, all you gods.
Zion hears and is glad,
And the daughters of Judah rejoice
Because of Your judgments, O Lord.
For You, Lord, are (J)most high above all the earth;
(K)You are exalted far above all gods.

10 You who love the Lord, (L)hate evil!
(M)He preserves the souls of His saints;
(N)He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 (O)Light is sown for the righteous,
And gladness for the upright in heart.
12 (P)Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous,
(Q)And give thanks [b]at the remembrance of [c]His holy name.

A Song of Praise to the Lord for His Salvation and Judgment

A Psalm.

98 Oh, (R)sing to the Lord a new song!
For He has (S)done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
(T)The Lord has made known His salvation;
(U)His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the [d]nations.
He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
(V)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
Sing to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.

Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together
    before the Lord,
(W)For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with [e]equity.

Praise to the Lord for His Holiness

99 The Lord reigns;
Let the peoples tremble!
(X)He dwells between the cherubim;
Let the earth be [f]moved!
The Lord is great in Zion,
And He is high above all the peoples.
Let them praise Your great and awesome name—
[g]He is holy.

The King’s strength also loves justice;
You have established equity;
You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God,
And worship at His footstool—
He is holy.

Moses and Aaron were among His priests,
And Samuel was among those who (Y)called upon His name;
They called upon the Lord, and He answered them.
He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar;
They kept His testimonies and the [h]ordinance He gave them.

You answered them, O Lord our God;
You were to them God-Who-Forgives,
Though You took vengeance on their deeds.
Exalt the Lord our God,
And worship at His holy hill;
For the Lord our God is holy.

Praise to God in Creation and Redemption

135 Praise the Lord!

Praise the name of the Lord;
(A)Praise Him, O you servants of the Lord!
(B)You who stand in the house of the Lord,
In (C)the courts of the house of our God,
Praise the Lord, for (D)the Lord is good;
Sing praises to His name, (E)for it is pleasant.
For (F)the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel for His [a]special treasure.

For I know that (G)the Lord is great,
And our Lord is above all gods.
(H)Whatever the Lord pleases He does,
In heaven and in earth,
In the seas and in all deep places.
(I)He causes the [b]vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth;
(J)He makes lightning for the rain;
He brings the wind out of His (K)treasuries.

(L)He [c]destroyed the firstborn of Egypt,
[d]Both of man and beast.
(M)He sent signs and wonders into the midst of you, O Egypt,
(N)Upon Pharaoh and all his servants.
10 (O)He defeated many nations
And slew mighty kings—
11 Sihon king of the Amorites,
Og king of Bashan,
And (P)all the kingdoms of Canaan—
12 (Q)And gave their land as a [e]heritage,
A heritage to Israel His people.

13 (R)Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
Your fame, O Lord, throughout all generations.
14 (S)For the Lord will judge His people,
And He will have compassion on His servants.

15 (T)The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
The work of men’s hands.
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
Eyes they have, but they do not see;
17 They have ears, but they do not hear;
Nor is there any breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them are like them;
So is everyone who trusts in them.

19 (U)Bless the Lord, O house of Israel!
Bless the Lord, O house of Aaron!
20 Bless the Lord, O house of Levi!
You who fear the Lord, bless the Lord!
21 Blessed be the Lord (V)out of Zion,
Who dwells in Jerusalem!

Praise the Lord!

For His mercy endures forever;
12 (AG)With a strong hand, and with [f]an outstretched arm,
For His mercy endures forever;
13 (AH)To Him who divided the Red Sea in two,
For His mercy endures forever;
14 And made Israel pass through the midst of it,
For His mercy endures forever;
15 (AI)But overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea,
For His mercy endures forever;
16 (AJ)To Him who led His people through the wilderness,
For His mercy endures forever;
17 (AK)To Him who struck down great kings,
For His mercy endures forever;
18 (AL)And slew famous kings,
For His mercy endures forever—
19 (AM)Sihon king of the Amorites,
For His mercy endures forever;
20 (AN)And Og king of Bashan,
For His mercy endures forever—
21 (AO)And gave their land as a [g]heritage,
For His mercy endures forever;
22 A heritage to Israel His servant,
For His mercy endures forever.

23 Who (AP)remembered us in our lowly state,
For His mercy endures forever;
24 And (AQ)rescued us from our enemies,
For His mercy endures forever;
25 (AR)Who gives food to all flesh,
For His mercy endures forever.

26 Oh, give thanks to the God of heaven!
For His mercy endures forever.

The Beginning of Knowledge

The (A)proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

To know wisdom and instruction,
To [a]perceive the words of understanding,
To receive the instruction of wisdom,
Justice, judgment, and equity;
To give prudence to the (B)simple,
To the young man knowledge and discretion—
(C)A wise man will hear and increase learning,
And a man of understanding will [b]attain wise counsel,
To understand a proverb and an enigma,
The words of the wise and their (D)riddles.

(E)The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Shun Evil Counsel

(F)My son, hear the instruction of your father,
And do not forsake the law of your mother;
For they will be a (G)graceful ornament on your head,
And chains about your neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice you,
(H)Do not consent.
11 If they say, “Come with us,
Let us (I)lie in wait to shed blood;
Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like [c]Sheol,
And whole, (J)like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious [d]possessions,
We shall fill our houses with [e]spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us,
Let us all have one purse”—
15 My son, (K)do not walk in the way with them,
(L)Keep your foot from their path;
16 (M)For their feet run to evil,
And they make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely, in [f]vain the net is spread
In the sight of any [g]bird;
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood,
They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 (N)So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain;
It takes away the life of its owners.

The Call of Wisdom

20 (O)Wisdom calls aloud [h]outside;
She raises her voice in the open squares.
21 She cries out in the [i]chief concourses,
At the openings of the gates in the city
She speaks her words:
22 “How long, you [j]simple ones, will you love [k]simplicity?
For scorners delight in their scorning,
And fools hate knowledge.
23 Turn at my rebuke;
Surely (P)I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
24 (Q)Because I have called and you refused,
I have stretched out my hand and no one regarded,
25 Because you (R)disdained all my counsel,
And would have none of my rebuke,
26 (S)I also will laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when your terror comes,
27 When (T)your terror comes like a storm,
And your destruction comes like a whirlwind,
When distress and anguish come upon you.

28 “Then(U) they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me.
29 Because they (V)hated knowledge
And did not (W)choose the fear of the Lord,
30 (X)They would have none of my counsel
And despised my every rebuke.
31 Therefore (Y)they shall eat the fruit of their own way,
And be filled to the full with their own fancies.
32 For the [l]turning away of the simple will slay them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 But whoever listens to me will dwell (Z)safely,
And (AA)will be [m]secure, without fear of evil.”

The Value of Wisdom

My son, if you receive my words,
And (AB)treasure my commands within you,
So that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding;
Yes, if you cry out for discernment,
And lift up your voice for understanding,
(AC)If you seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
(AD)Then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God.
(AE)For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
(AF)He is a shield to those who walk uprightly;
He guards the paths of justice,
And (AG)preserves the way of His saints.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice,
Equity and every good path.

10 When wisdom enters your heart,
And knowledge is pleasant to your soul,
11 Discretion will preserve you;
(AH)Understanding will keep you,
12 To deliver you from the way of evil,
From the man who speaks perverse things,
13 From those who leave the paths of uprightness
To (AI)walk in the ways of darkness;
14 (AJ)Who rejoice in doing evil,
And delight in the perversity of the wicked;
15 (AK)Whose ways are crooked,
And who are devious in their paths;
16 To deliver you from (AL)the immoral woman,
(AM)From the seductress who flatters with her words,
17 Who forsakes the companion of her youth,
And forgets the covenant of her God.
18 For (AN)her house [n]leads down to death,
And her paths to the dead;
19 None who go to her return,
Nor do they [o]regain the paths of life—
20 So you may walk in the way of goodness,
And keep to the paths of righteousness.
21 For the upright will dwell in the (AO)land,
And the blameless will remain in it;
22 But the wicked will be [p]cut off from the [q]earth,
And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.

Guidance for the Young

My son, do not forget my law,
(AP)But let your heart keep my commands;
For length of days and long life
And (AQ)peace they will add to you.

Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
(AR)Bind them around your neck,
(AS)Write them on the tablet of your heart,
(AT)And so find favor and [r]high esteem
In the sight of God and man.

(AU)Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
(AV)And lean not on your own understanding;
(AW)In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall [s]direct your paths.

Do not be wise in your own (AX)eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil.
It will be health to your [t]flesh,
And (AY)strength[u] to your bones.

(AZ)Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 (BA)So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

11 (BB)My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor detest His correction;
12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects,
(BC)Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

13 (BD)Happy is the man who finds wisdom,
And the man who gains understanding;
14 (BE)For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver,
And her gain than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies,
And (BF)all the things you may desire cannot compare with her.
16 (BG)Length of days is in her right hand,
In her left hand riches and honor.
17 (BH)Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace.
18 She is (BI)a tree of life to those who take hold of her,
And happy are all who [v]retain her.

19 (BJ)The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
By understanding He established the heavens;
20 By His knowledge the depths were (BK)broken up,
And clouds drop down the dew.

21 My son, let them not depart from your eyes—
Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
22 So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.
23 (BL)Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
25 (BM)Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
26 For the Lord will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.

27 (BN)Do not withhold good from [w]those to whom it is due,
When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
28 (BO)Do not say to your neighbor,
“Go, and come back,
And tomorrow I will give it,
When you have it with you.
29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor,
For he dwells by you for safety’s sake.
30 (BP)Do not strive with a man without cause,
If he has done you no harm.

31 (BQ)Do not envy the oppressor,
And choose none of his ways;
32 For the perverse person is an abomination to the Lord,
(BR)But His secret counsel is with the upright.
33 (BS)The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked,
But (BT)He blesses the home of the just.
34 (BU)Surely He scorns the scornful,
But gives grace to the humble.
35 The wise shall inherit glory,
But shame shall be the legacy of fools.

Greeting

Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, (A)called to be an apostle, (B)separated to the gospel of God (C)which He promised before (D)through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who [a]was (E)born of the seed of David according to the flesh, and (F)declared to be the Son of God with power according (G)to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. Through Him (H)we have received grace and apostleship for (I)obedience to the faith among all nations (J)for His name, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;

To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, (K)called to be saints:

(L)Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Desire to Visit Rome

First, (M)I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that (N)your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. For (O)God is my witness, (P)whom I serve [b]with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that (Q)without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, 10 making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you. 11 For I long to see you, that (R)I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established— 12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by (S)the mutual faith both of you and me.

13 Now I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that I often planned to come to you (but (T)was hindered until now), that I might have some (U)fruit among you also, just as among the other Gentiles. 14 I am a debtor both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to wise and to unwise. 15 So, as much as is in me, I am ready to preach the gospel to you who are in Rome also.

The Just Live by Faith

16 For (V)I am not ashamed of the gospel [c]of Christ, for (W)it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, (X)for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For (Y)in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, (Z)“The just shall live by faith.”

God’s Wrath on Unrighteousness

18 (AA)For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and (AB)unrighteousness of men, who [d]suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because (AC)what may be known of God is [e]manifest [f]in them, for (AD)God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world (AE)His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and [g]Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but (AF)became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 (AG)Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the (AH)incorruptible (AI)God into an image made like [h]corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 (AJ)Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, (AK)to dishonor their bodies (AL)among themselves, 25 who exchanged (AM)the truth of God (AN)for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to (AO)vile passions. For even their [i]women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the [j]men, leaving the natural use of the [k]woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things (AP)which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, [l]sexual immorality, wickedness, [m]covetousness, [n]maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 [o]undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, [p]unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, (AQ)knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things (AR)are deserving of death, not only do the same but also (AS)approve of those who practice them.

God’s Righteous Judgment

Therefore you are (AT)inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, (AU)for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things. And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise (AV)the riches of His goodness, (AW)forbearance, and (AX)longsuffering, (AY)not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But in accordance with your hardness and your [q]impenitent heart (AZ)you are [r]treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who (BA)“will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and (BB)do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew (BC)first and also of the [s]Greek; 10 (BD)but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For (BE)there is no partiality with God.

12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law 13 (for (BF)not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified; 14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15 who show the (BG)work of the law written in their hearts, their (BH)conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16 (BI)in the day when God will judge the secrets of men (BJ)by Jesus Christ, (BK)according to my gospel.

The Jews Guilty as the Gentiles

17 [t]Indeed (BL)you are called a Jew, and (BM)rest[u] on the law, (BN)and make your boast in God, 18 and (BO)know His will, and (BP)approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law, 19 and (BQ)are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, (BR)having the form of knowledge and truth in the law. 21 (BS)You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, (BT)do you rob temples? 23 You who (BU)make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? 24 For (BV)“the name of God is (BW)blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.

Circumcision of No Avail

25 (BX)For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 Therefore, (BY)if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision? 27 And will not the physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, (BZ)judge you who, even with your [v]written code and circumcision, are a transgressor of the law? 28 For (CA)he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; 29 but he is a Jew (CB)who is one inwardly; and (CC)circumcision is that of the heart, (CD)in the Spirit, not in the letter; (CE)whose [w]praise is not from men but from God.

God’s Judgment Defended

What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision? Much in every way! Chiefly because (CF)to them were committed the [x]oracles of God. For what if (CG)some did not believe? (CH)Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of God without effect? (CI)Certainly not! Indeed, let (CJ)God be [y]true but (CK)every man a liar. As it is written:

(CL)“That You may be justified in Your words,
And may overcome when You are judged.”

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unjust who inflicts wrath? (CM)(I speak as a man.) Certainly not! For then (CN)how will God judge the world?

For if the truth of God has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner? And why not say, (CO)“Let us do evil that good may come”?—as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their [z]condemnation is just.

All Have Sinned(CP)

What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that (CQ)they are all under sin.

10 As it is written:

(CR)“There is none righteous, no, not one;
11 There is none who understands;
There is none who seeks after God.
12 They have all turned aside;
They have together become unprofitable;
There is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their(CS) throat is an open [aa]tomb;
With their tongues they have practiced deceit”;
(CT)“The poison of asps is under their lips”;
14 “Whose(CU) mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their(CV) feet are swift to shed blood;
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways;
17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There(CW) is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever (CX)the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that (CY)every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become [ab]guilty before God. 20 Therefore (CZ)by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

God’s Righteousness Through Faith

21 But now (DA)the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, (DB)being witnessed by the Law (DC)and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all [ac]and on all who believe. For (DD)there is no difference; 23 for (DE)all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified [ad]freely (DF)by His grace (DG)through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth (DH)as a [ae]propitiation (DI)by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over (DJ)the sins that were previously committed, 26 to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Boasting Excluded

27 (DK)Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude (DL)that a man is [af]justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law. 29 Or is He the God of the Jews only? Is He not also the God of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also, 30 since (DM)there is one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law.

Abraham Justified by Faith(DN)

What then shall we say that (DO)Abraham our (DP)father[ag] has found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was (DQ)justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? (DR)“Abraham believed God, and it was [ah]accounted to him for righteousness.” Now (DS)to him who works, the wages are not counted [ai]as grace but as debt.

David Celebrates the Same Truth

But to him who (DT)does not work but believes on Him who justifies (DU)the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, just as David also (DV)describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed(DW) are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
And whose sins are covered;
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”

Abraham Justified Before Circumcision

Does this blessedness then come upon the circumcised only, or upon the uncircumcised also? For we say that faith was accounted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How then was it accounted? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised. 11 And (DX)he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while still uncircumcised, that (DY)he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are uncircumcised, that righteousness might be imputed to them also, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also walk in the steps of the faith which our father (DZ)Abraham had while still uncircumcised.

The Promise Granted Through Faith

13 For the promise that he would be the (EA)heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For (EB)if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, 15 because (EC)the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be (ED)according to grace, (EE)so that the promise might be [aj]sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, (EF)who is the father of us all 17 (as it is written, (EG)“I have made you a father of many nations”) in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, (EH)who gives life to the dead and calls those (EI)things which do not exist as though they did; 18 who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, (EJ)“So shall your descendants be.” 19 And not being weak in faith, (EK)he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), (EL)and the deadness of Sarah’s womb. 20 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, 21 and being fully convinced that what He had promised (EM)He was also able to perform. 22 And therefore (EN)“it was accounted to him for righteousness.”

23 Now (EO)it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24 but also for us. It shall be imputed to us who believe (EP)in Him who raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 (EQ)who was delivered up because of our offenses, and (ER)was raised because of our justification.

Faith Triumphs in Trouble

Therefore, (ES)having been justified by faith, [ak]we have (ET)peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, (EU)through whom also we have access by faith into this grace (EV)in which we stand, and (EW)rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but (EX)we also glory in tribulations, (EY)knowing that tribulation produces [al]perseverance; (EZ)and perseverance, [am]character; and character, hope. (FA)Now hope does not disappoint, (FB)because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Christ in Our Place

For when we were still without strength, [an]in due time (FC)Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But (FD)God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified (FE)by His blood, we shall be saved (FF)from wrath through Him. 10 For (FG)if when we were enemies (FH)we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved (FI)by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also (FJ)rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Death in Adam, Life in Christ(FK)

12 Therefore, just as (FL)through one man sin entered the world, and (FM)death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but (FN)sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, (FO)who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the [ao]offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded (FP)to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many [ap]offenses resulted in justification. 17 For if by the one man’s [aq]offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

18 Therefore, as through [ar]one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through (FQ)one[as] Man’s righteous act the free gift came (FR)to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by (FS)one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

20 Moreover (FT)the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace (FU)abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

What shall we say then? (FV)Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who (FW)died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that (FX)as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus (FY)were baptized into His death? Therefore we were (FZ)buried with Him through baptism into death, that (GA)just as Christ was raised from the dead by (GB)the glory of the Father, (GC)even so we also should walk in newness of life.

(GD)For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that (GE)our old man was crucified with Him, that (GF)the body of sin might be [at]done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For (GG)he who has died has been [au]freed from sin. Now (GH)if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that (GI)Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, (GJ)He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, (GK)He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, [av]reckon yourselves to be (GL)dead indeed to sin, but (GM)alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

12 (GN)Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your (GO)members as [aw]instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but (GP)present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For (GQ)sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

From Slaves of Sin to Slaves of God

15 What then? Shall we sin (GR)because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! 16 Do you not know that (GS)to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? 17 But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart (GT)that form of doctrine to which you were [ax]delivered. 18 And (GU)having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. 19 I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness [ay]for holiness.

20 For when you were (GV)slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 (GW)What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For (GX)the end of those things is death. 22 But now (GY)having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit [az]to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. 23 For (GZ)the wages of sin is death, but (HA)the [ba]gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Freed from the Law

Or do you not know, brethren (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law [bb]has dominion over a man as long as he lives? For (HB)the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then (HC)if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become (HD)dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should (HE)bear fruit to God. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law (HF)were at work in our members (HG)to bear fruit to death. But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve (HH)in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

Sin’s Advantage in the Law

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, (HI)I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, (HJ)“You shall not covet.” But (HK)sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For (HL)apart from the law sin was dead. I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died. 10 And the commandment, (HM)which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. 12 Therefore (HN)the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

Law Cannot Save from Sin

13 Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, (HO)sold under sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. (HP)For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. 16 If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. 17 But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that (HQ)in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. 20 Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I (HR)delight in the law of God according to (HS)the inward man. 23 But (HT)I see another law in (HU)my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me (HV)from this body of death? 25 (HW)I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
