¹¹ And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life,^(A) and this life is in his Son.^{(B) 12} Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.^(C)

Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus

¹⁷ On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.^{(A) 18} Now Bethany^(B) was less than two miles^[a] from Jerusalem, ¹⁹ and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.^{(C) 20} When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.^(D)

²¹ “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.^{(E) 22} But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”^(F)

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

²⁴ Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection^(G) at the last day.”^(H)

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am^(I) the resurrection and the life.^(J) The one who believes^(K) in me will live, even though they die; ²⁶ and whoever lives by believing^(L) in me will never die.^(M) Do you believe this?”

³⁹ Again they tried to seize him,^(A) but he escaped their grasp.^(B)

²⁷ Just as people are destined to die once,^(A) and after that to face judgment,^{(B) 28} so Christ was sacrificed once^(C) to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time,^(D) not to bear sin,^(E) but to bring salvation^(F) to those who are waiting for him.^(G)

²⁷ Indeed Herod^(A) and Pontius Pilate^(B) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,^(C) whom you anointed. ²⁸ They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.^(D)

³ Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.^{(A) 4} Christ is the culmination of the law^(B) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.^(C)

⁵ Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”^{[a](D) 6} But the righteousness that is by faith^(E) says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”^[b](F) (that is, to bring Christ down) ⁷ “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”^[c](G) (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).^{(H) 8} But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”^[d](I) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: ⁹ If you declare^(J) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”^(K) and believe^(L) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,^(M) you will be saved.^{(N) 10} For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. ¹¹ As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”^{[e](O) 12} For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile^(P)—the same Lord is Lord of all^(Q) and richly blesses all who call on him, ¹³ for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord^(R) will be saved.”^[f](S)

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up^(A) and said, “Father,^(B) I thank you that you have heard me. ⁴² I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,^(C) that they may believe that you sent me.”^(D)

⁴³ When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”^(E)

⁴⁴ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen,^(A) and a cloth around his face.^(B)

Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

¹⁸ I am the Living One; I was dead,^(A) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!^(B) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.^(C)
