Jesus Comforts the Sisters of Lazarus

17 On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.(A) 18 Now Bethany(B) was less than two miles[a] from Jerusalem, 19 and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.(C) 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.(D)

21 “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died.(E) 22 But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”(F)

23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”

24 Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection(G) at the last day.”(H)

25 Jesus said to her, “I am(I) the resurrection and the life.(J) The one who believes(K) in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing(L) in me will never die.(M) Do you believe this?”

Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.(A) Christ is the culmination of the law(B) so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.(C)

Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”[a](D) But the righteousness that is by faith(E) says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[b](F) (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[c](G) (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).(H) But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[d](I) that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: If you declare(J) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”(K) and believe(L) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,(M) you will be saved.(N) 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[e](O) 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile(P)—the same Lord is Lord of all(Q) and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord(R) will be saved.”[f](S)
