18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20 Brothers, (A)do not be children in your thinking. (B)Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be (C)mature. 21 (D)In the Law it is written, (E)“By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign[a] not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, (F)will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 (G)the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, (H)falling on his face, he will worship God and (I)declare that God is really among you.

Orderly Worship

26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has (J)a hymn, (K)a lesson, (L)a revelation, (M)a tongue, or (N)an interpretation. (O)Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in (P)a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others (Q)weigh what is said. 30 If a revelation is made to another sitting there, (R)let the first be silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, so that all may learn and all be encouraged, 32 and the spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. 33 For God is not a God of (S)confusion but of peace.

As in (T)all the churches of the saints, 34 (U)the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but (V)should be in submission, as (W)the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.

36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 (X)If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. 39 So, my brothers, (Y)earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. 40 (Z)But all things should be done decently and (AA)in order.

29 Two or three prophets(Q) should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said.(R) 30 And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop. 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged. 32 The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets.(S) 33 For God is not a God of disorder(T) but of peace(U)—as in all the congregations(V) of the Lord’s people.(W)

34 Women[b] should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak,(X) but must be in submission,(Y) as the law(Z) says. 35 If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.[c]

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said:

“If one ventures a word with you, will you be impatient?
    Yet who can keep from speaking?

Your words have upheld him who was stumbling,

But now it has come to you, and you are impatient;
    it touches you, and you are dismayed.

    Or where were the upright cut off?

10 The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion,

    therefore my words have been rash.
For (BC)the arrows of the Almighty are in me;
    my spirit drinks their poison;
    the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
Does the wild donkey bray when he has grass,
    or the ox low over his fodder?
Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt,
    or is there any taste in the juice of the mallow?[i]
My appetite refuses to touch them;
    they are as food that is loathsome to me.[j]

“Oh that I might have my request,
    and that God would fulfill my hope,
that it would (BD)please God to crush me,
    that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!
10 This would be my comfort;
    I would even exult[k] in pain (BE)unsparing,
    for I have not denied the words of (BF)the Holy One.
11 What is my strength, that I should wait?
    And what is my end, that I should be patient?
12 Is my strength the strength of stones, or is my flesh bronze?
13 Have I any help in me,
    when resource is driven from me?

    forsakes the fear of the Almighty.
15 My (BI)brothers are (BJ)treacherous as a torrent-bed,
    as torrential (BK)streams that pass away,
16 which are dark with ice,
    and where the snow hides itself.
17 When they melt, they disappear;
    when it is hot, they vanish from their place.
18 The caravans turn aside from their course;

19 The caravans of (BM)Tema look,
    the travelers of (BN)Sheba hope.
20 They are (BO)ashamed because they were confident;
    they come there and are (BP)disappointed.
21 For you have now become nothing;

Job Continues: My Life Has No Hope

“Has not man (BU)a hard service on earth,
    and are not his (BV)days like the days of a hired hand?
Like a slave who longs for (BW)the shadow,
    and like (BX)a hired hand who looks for his (BY)wages,
so I am allotted months of (BZ)emptiness,
    (CA)and nights of misery are apportioned to me.
(CB)When I lie down I say, ‘When shall I arise?’
    But the night is long,
    and I am full of tossing till the dawn.
My flesh is clothed with (CC)worms and (CD)dirt;
    my skin hardens, then (CE)breaks out afresh.
My days are (CF)swifter than (CG)a weaver's shuttle
    and come to their end without hope.

16 when darkened by thawing ice

17 but that stop flowing in the dry season,

18 Caravans turn aside from their routes;
    they go off into the wasteland and perish.

35 (H)I have seen a wicked, ruthless man,

37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright,
    for there is a future for the man of (K)peace.
38 But (L)transgressors shall be altogether destroyed;
    the future of the wicked (M)shall be cut off.

39 (N)The salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in (O)the time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and (P)delivers them;
