18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yetbecause you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.20 Remember the word that I said to you,‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.21 Butall these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin,but now they have no excuse for their sin.23 He who hates Me hates My Father also.24 If I had not done among themthe works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they haveseen and also hated both Me and My Father.25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law,‘They hated Me without a cause.’
The Coming Rejection
26 “But when the[a]Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,He will testify of Me.27 Andyou also will bear witness, becauseyou have been with Me from the beginning.
Jesus Warns and Comforts His Disciples
16 “These things I have spoken to you, that youshould not be made to stumble.2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is comingthat whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.3 Andthese things they will do[b]to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.4 But these things I have told you, that when[c]the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
“And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.
12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. 14 If you are [a]reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. [b]On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. 15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a [c]busybody in other people’s matters. 16 Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this [d]matter.
17 For the time has comefor judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 Now
“If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?”
19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.
