열두 제자를 부르심
10 예수님은 열두 제자를 불러 그들에게 더러운 귀신을 쫓아내며 모든 병 과 허약한 체질을 고치는 권능을 주셨다.
2 이 열두 사도의 이름은 이렇다: 베드로라는 시몬, 시몬의 형제 안드레, 세베대의 아들 야고보, 야고보의 형제 요한,
3 빌립, 바돌로매, 도마, 세무원 마태, 알패오의 아들 야고보, 다대오,
4 [a]가나안 사람 시몬, 그리고 예수님을 판 가룟 사람 유다였다.
전도자의 각오
5 예수님은 이 열두 사람을 보내시며 이렇게 명령하셨다. “너희는 이방인들이나 사마리아 사람들에게 가지 말고
6 하나님의 잃어버린 양과 같은 이스라엘 사람들에게 가거라.
7 가서 ‘하늘 나라가 가까웠다’ 고 전하여라.
8 병든 사람을 고치고 죽은 사람을 살리고 문둥병자를 깨끗하게 하며 귀신을 쫓아내어라. 너희가 거저 받았으니 거저 주어라.
9 [b]돈은 일체 가지고 가지 말아라.
10 여행 가방이나 갈아 입을 옷이나 여분의 신발이나 지팡이도 갖고 가지 말아라. 일꾼이 자기 먹을 것을 받는 것이 마땅하다.
11 어느 도시나 마을에 들어가든지 [c]너희를 기꺼이 영접하고자 하는 사람을 찾아 너희가 떠날 때까지 그 집에 머물러라.
12 너희는 그 집에 들어가면서 [d]평안을 빌어 주어라.
13 만일 그 집이 너희 평안의 축복을 받을 만하면 너희가 빈 평안이 그 집에 내릴 것이고 그렇지 못하면 그 평안이 너희에게 되돌아올 것이다.
14 누구든지 너희를 영접하지도 않고 너희 말도 듣지 않거든 그 집이나 그 마을을 떠날 때 신발에 묻은 먼지를 떨어 버려라.
15 내가 분명히 말하지만 심판 날에는 소돔과 고모라가 그 마을보다 더 견디기 쉬울 것이다.
16 “내가 너희를 보내는 것이 양을 이리떼 속으로 보내는 것과 같다. 그러므로 너희는 뱀처럼 지혜롭고 비둘기처럼 순결하여라.
17 사람들을 조심하라. 그들이 너희를 [e]법정에 넘겨 주고 회당에서 채찍질할 것이다.
18 너희는 나 때문에 총독들과 왕들 앞에 끌려가서 그들과 이방인들에게 내 증인이 될 것이다.
19 그러나 그들이 너희를 법정에 넘길 때 무엇을 어떻게 말할까 걱정하지 말아라. 그 때에 너희가 할 말을 일러 주실 것이다.
20 이때 말하는 이는 너희가 아니라 너희 속 에서 말씀하시는 너희 아버지의 성령이시다.
21 또 형제가 형제를, 아버지가 자식을 고발하여 죽게 할 것이며 자식이 부모를 대적하여 죽게 할 것이다.
22 그리고 너희가 나 때문에 모든 사람에게서 미움을 받을 것이나 끝까지 견디는 사람은 구원을 받을 것이다.
23 어떤 마을에서 사람들이 너희를 괴롭히거든 다른 마을로 피하라. 내가 분명히 말해 두지만 너희가 이곳 저곳으로 피하며 이스라엘의 마을들을 다 다니기 전에 [f]내가 올 것이다.
24 “제자가 스승보다 높지 못하고 종이 주인보다 높지 못하다.
25 제자는 스승과 같이 되는 것으로 만족해야 하고 종은 주인과 같이 되는 것으로 만족해야 한다. 집 주인인 나를 [g]사탄이라고 불렀으니 [h]너희에게야 오죽하겠느냐?
26 그러나 너희를 위협하는 사람들을 두려워하지 말아라. 감추어진 일이 드러나지 않을 것이 없고 숨겨진 일이 알려지지 않을 것이 없다.
27 너희는 내가 너희에게 어두운 데서 말한 것을 밝은 데서 말하고 너희 귀에 조용히 들려 준 것을 옥상에서 큰 소리로 전파하라.
28 몸은 죽여도 영혼은 죽이지 못하는 사람들을 두려워하지 말고 영혼과 몸을 [i]지옥에서 다 멸망시킬 수 있는 분을 두려워하라.
29 참새 두 마리가 [j]동전 몇 푼에 팔리지 않느냐? 그러나 너희 아버지께서 허락하지 않으시면 그 참새 한 마리도 그저 땅에 떨어지는 법이 없다.
30 하나님은 너희 머리카락도 다 세고 계신다.
31 그러므로 두려워하지 말아라. 너희는 많은 참새들보다 더 귀하다.
32 누구든지 사람들 앞에서 나를 안다고 하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 안다고 할 것이다.
33 그러나 누구든지 사람들 앞에서 나를 모른다고 하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 모른다고 할 것이다.
34 “너희는 내가 세상에 평화를 주러 왔다고 생각하지 말아라. 평화가 아니라 칼을 주려고 왔다.
35 나는 아들과 아버지, 딸과 어머니, 며느리와 시어머니가 서로 다투게 하려고 왔다.
36 그러므로 사람의 원수는 자기 식구가 될 것이다.
37 나보다 자기 부모를 더 사랑하는 사람은 내 제자가 되기에 적합하지 않고 나보다 자기 자식을 더 사랑하는 사람도 적합하지 않으며
38 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르지 않는 사람 역시 내 제자로서 적합하지 않다.
39 자기 생명을 아끼는 사람은 잃을 것이며 나를 위해 자기 생명을 버리는 사람은 얻을 것이다.
40 “너희를 영접하는 사람은 나를 영접하는 것이며 나를 영접하는 사람은 나를 보내신 하나님을 영접하는 것이다.
41 누구든지 예언자를 영접하면 예언자가 받는 상을 받을 것이며 의로운 사람을 영접하면 의로운 사람이 받는 상을 받을 것이다.
42 내가 분명히 말해 둔다. [k]아주 보잘것없는 사람이지만 그가 내 제자라는 이유로 그에게 냉수 한 그릇이라도 대접하는 사람은 반드시 상을 받을 것이다.”
예수님과 세례 요한
11 예수님은 이처럼 열두 제자에게 교훈하신 후에 여러 마을에서 가르치며 전도하시려고 그 곳을 떠나셨다.
2 요한이 감옥에 갇혀 있으면서 그리스도의 하신 일을 듣고 제자들을 예수님께 보내
3 “오실 분이 선생님입니까, 아니면 우리가 다른 분을 기다려야 합니까?” 하고 물어 보게 하였다.
4 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희는 가서 듣고 본 것을 요한에게 알려라.
5 소경이 눈을 뜨고 앉은뱅이가 걷고 문둥병자가 깨끗해지며 귀머거리가 듣고 죽은 사람이 살아나고 가난한 사람에게 기쁜 소식이 전파된다고 하라.
6 그리고 [l]나를 의심하지 않는 사람이 행복하다고 일러 주어라.”
7 그들이 떠난 뒤 예수님은 사람들에게 요한에 대하여 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희가 무엇을 보려고 광야에 나갔느냐? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대냐,
8 아니면 화려한 옷을 입은 사람이냐? 그런 사람은 왕궁에 있다.
9 그러면 너희가 어째서 나갔느냐? 예언자를 보려고 나갔느냐? 사실 요한은 예언자보다 더 훌륭하다.
10 이 사람을 가리켜 성경에 [m]‘보라! 내가 너보다 앞서 내 사자를 보내겠다. 그가 네 앞에서 네 길을 준비할 것이다’ 라고 기록되어 있다.
11 내가 분명히 말하지만 여자에게서 태어난 사람 중에 [n]세례 요한보다 더 큰 사람은 없다. 그러나 하늘 나라에서는 가장 작은 사람이라도 그보다는 크다.
12 세례 요한의 때부터 지금까지 하늘 나라는 침략을 당하고 있다. 그리고 침략하는 사람이 그 나라를 빼앗는다.
13 모든 예언자들과 율법은 요한의 때까지 예언하였다.
14 너희가 받아들이기를 원한다면 요한이야말로 오기로 되어 있는 엘리야이다.
15 귀 있는 사람은 잘 들어라.
16-17 이 시대 사람을 무엇에 비할 수 있을 까? 이들은 마치 장터에 앉아서 자기 친구들에게 ‘우리가 피리를 불어도 너희가 춤추지 않고 우리가 상여 노래를 불러도 너희가 울지 않았다’ 하고 말하는 아이들과 같다.
18 요한이 와서 먹지도 마시지도 않자 사람들이 ‘그는 귀신 들렸다’ 하더니
19 [o]내가 와서 먹고 마시자 ‘이 사람은 먹고 마시기를 좋아하는 사람이며 세무원과 죄인들의 친구이다’ 하고 말한다. 그러나 [p]하나님의 지혜는 거기에 따르는 결과로 옳다는 것이 입증된다.”
경고와 초청
20 예수님은 기적을 가장 많이 베푸신 마을들이 회개하지 않으므로 이렇게 꾸짖으셨다.
21 “고라신아, 벳새다야, 너희에게 불행이 닥칠 것이다. 너희에게 행한 기적들을 두로와 시돈에서 행했더라면 그들은 벌써 굵은 삼베 옷을 입고 재를 뒤집어쓰고 회개했을 것이다.
22 내가 너희에게 말한다. 심판 날에는 너희보다 두로와 시돈이 더 견디기 쉬울 것이다.
23 가버나움아, 네가 하늘에까지 높아질 것 같으냐? 아니다. [q]지옥에까지 내려갈 것이다. 네게 베푼 그 엄청난 기적을 소돔에서 행하였더라면 오늘까지 소돔이 남아 있을 것이다.
24 내가 너희에게 말한다. 심판 날에는 소돔이 너보다 더 견디기 쉬울 것이다.”
25 그때 예수님은 이렇게 기도하셨다. “하늘과 땅의 주인이신 아버지, 이것을 지혜롭고 영리한 사람에게는 숨기시고 어린 아이들에게는 나타내시니 감사합니다.
26 그렇습니다. 이것은 아버지의 기뻐하시는 뜻이었습니다.
27 아버지께서는 모든 것을 내게 맡겨 주셨습니다. 아버지 외에는 아들을 아는 사람이 없고, 아들과 그리고 아들이 아버지를 알게 하려고 선택하는 사람 외에는 아버지를 아는 사람이 없습니다.”
28 “수고하고 무거운 짐 진 사람들아, 다 나에게 오너라. 내가 너희를 쉬게 하겠다.
29 나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하다. 내 멍에를 메고 내게 배워라. 그러면 너희 영혼이 쉼을 얻을 것이다.
30 내 멍에는 메기 쉽고 내 짐은 가볍다.”
안식일의 주인
12 어느 안식일에 예수님이 밀밭 사이로 지나가실 때 제자들이 배가 고파 밀 이삭을 잘라 먹었다.
2 이것을 본 바리새파 사람들이 예수님께 “보십시오. 당신의 제자들이 안식일에 해서는 안 될 일을 하고 있습니다” 하고 말하였다.
3 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희는 다윗이 자기 일행과 함께 배가 고팠을 때 한 일을 읽어 보지 못했느냐?
4 다윗이 하나님의 집에 들어가 제사장만이 먹을 수 있는 [r]차림빵을 그의 일행과 함께 먹지 않았느냐?
5 또 안식일에 제사장이 성전 안에서 안식일 규정을 어겨도 죄가 되지 않는다는 것을 율법에서 읽지 못하였느냐?
6 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 그 성전보다 더 큰 이가 여기 있다.
7 [s]‘내가 자비를 원하고 제사를 원치 않는다’ 는 말씀이 무슨 뜻인지 알았더라면 너희가 죄 없는 사람을 죄인으로 단정하지는 않았을 것이다.
8 [t]나는 바로 안식일의 주인이다.”
9 예수님이 그 곳을 떠나 회당에 들어가셨을 때
10 거기에 한쪽 손이 오그라든 사람이 있었다. 사람들은 예수님을 고발할 구실을 찾으려고 “안식일에 병을 고쳐도 좋습니까?” 하고 물었다.
11 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희 중에 어떤 사람이 양 한 마리를 가졌는데 그 양이 안식일에 구덩이에 빠졌다면 끌어올리지 않겠느냐?
12 사람은 양보다 더욱 귀하다. 그러므로 안식일에 선한 일을 하는 것은 옳은 일이다.”
13 그러고서 예수님은 그 사람에게 “네 손을 펴라” 하고 말씀하셨다. 그래서 그가 손을 펴자 완전히 회복되어 다른 손과 같이 되었다.
14 그러나 바리새파 사람들은 나가서 예수님을 없애 버리려고 의논하였다.
15 예수님이 이 일을 아시고 그 곳을 떠나시자 많은 사람들이 뒤따랐다. 예수님은 모든 병자들을 고쳐 주시고
16 자기에 대한 소문을 내지 못하도록 그들에게 단단히 주의시키셨다.
17 이것은 예언자 이사야의 다음과 같은 예언을 이루기 위해서였다.
18 [u]“내가 택한 나의 종, 내가 기뻐하는 나의 사랑하는 자를 보아라. 내가 그에게 내 성령을 주겠다. 그가 [v]온 세상에 진리를 선포할 것이다.
19 그는 다투거나 소리치지 않을 것이니 아무도 길거리에서 그의 음성을 듣지 못할 것이다.
20 [w]그는 진리가 승리할 때까지 상한 갈대를 꺾지 않고 꺼져가는 등불을 끄지 않으실 것이다.
21 그리고 온 세상 사람들은 그의 이름에 희망을 걸 것이다.”
22 그때 사람들이 귀신 들려 눈멀고 말 못하는 사람을 예수님께 데려왔다. 예수님이 그를 고쳐 주시자 눈먼 벙어리가 말도 하고 보게 되었다.
23 그러자 사람들이 다 놀라 “이분이 혹시 [x]다윗의 후손이 아닐까?” 하고 말하였다.
24 그러나 바리새파 사람들은 이 말을 듣고 “이 사람은 귀신의 왕 [y]사탄의 도움으로 귀신을 쫓아낸다” 하였다.
25 예수님은 그들의 생각을 아시고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “어느 나라든지 서로 싸워 갈라지면 망하고 그 어떤 마을이나 집안도 서로 싸워 갈라지면 오래가지 못한다.
26 만일 사탄이 사탄을 쫓아내면 이미 서로 갈라져 싸우는 것이니 그렇게 하고서야 어떻게 그의 나라가 설 수 있겠느냐?
27 내가 사탄의 도움으로 귀신을 쫓아낸다면 [z]너희를 따르는 사람들은 누구의 도움으로 귀신을 쫓아내느냐? 그러므로 그들이 너희 재판관이 될 것이다.
28 그러나 내가 하나님의 성령으로 귀신을 쫓아낸다면 벌써 하나님의 나라가 너희에게 와 있는 것이다.
29 강한 사람의 집에 들어가 물건을 털어가려고 하면 먼저 그 사람을 잡아 묶어야 한다. 그렇지 않고 어떻게 그 집을 털 수 있겠느냐?
30 나와 함께하지 않는 사람은 나를 반대하는 사람이고 나와 함께 모으지 않는 사람은 흩어 버리는 사람이다.
31 내가 분명히 말해 둔다. 사람에 대한 모든 죄와 모독은 용서받을 수 있으나 성령님에 대한 모독은 용서받지 못할 것이다.
32 누구든지 [aa]나를 욕하는 사람은 용서받을 수 있으나 성령님을 욕하는 사람은 이 세대나 오는 세대에서도 용서받지 못할 것이다.
33 “나무가 좋으면 그 열매도 좋고 나무가 나쁘면 열매도 나쁘다. 열매로 그 나무를 알 수 있다.
34 독사의 자식들아! 너희가 악한데 어떻게 선한 말을 할 수 있겠느냐? 마음에 가득 찬 것을 입으로 말하기 마련이다.
35 선한 사람은 마음속에 쌓인 선으로 선한 말을 하고 악한 사람은 마음속에 쌓인 악으로 악한 말을 한다.
36 내가 너희에게 말한다. 사람은 함부로 지껄인 모든 말에 대해서 심판 날에 해명을 해야 한다.
37 네가 한 말에 따라서 네가 무죄가 되기도 하고 유죄가 되기도 할 것이다.”
기적을 요구함
38 그때 [ab]율법학자와 바리새파 사람 몇 명이 예수님께 와서 “선생님, 우리는 선생님이 행하시는 기적을 보고 싶습니다” 하고 말하였다.
39 그러나 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. “악하고 음란한 세대가 기적을 요구하나 예언자 요나의 기적밖에는 보일 것이 없다.
40 요나가 사흘 동안 큰 물고기 뱃속에 있었던 것처럼 나도 사흘 동안 땅 속에 있을 것이다.
41 요나의 전도를 듣고 회개한 니느웨 사람들이 심판 때에 일어나 이 세대 사람을 죄인으로 단정할 것이다. 자, 보아라. 요나보다 더 위대한 사람이 여기 있다.
42 솔로몬의 지혜를 들으려고 땅 끝에서 왔던 남방 여왕도 심판 때에 일어나 이 세대 사람을 죄인으로 단정할 것이다. 자, 보아라. 솔로몬보다 더 위대한 사람이 여기 있다.
43 “더러운 귀신이 어떤 사람에게서 나와 물 없는 곳으로 다니며 쉴 곳을 찾았으나 얻지 못하였다.
44 그래서 귀신이 ‘내가 나온 내 집으로 돌아가야겠다’ 하고 가 보니 그 집이 비고 깨끗이 소제되고 정돈되어 있었다.
45 그 귀신이 가서 자기보다 악한 다른 귀신 일곱을 더 데리고 들어가 거기서 살자 그 사람의 나중 상태가 처음보다 더 비참하게 되었다. 이 악한 세대도 이와 같이 될 것이다.”
46 예수님이 아직 군중에게 말씀하고 계실 때 예수님의 어머니와 형제들이 예수님께 드릴 말씀이 있다고 찾아왔다.
47 그래서 어떤 사람이 예수님께 “선생님, 어머니와 형제분들이 선생님을 만나 뵈려고 밖에서 기다립니다” 하였다.
48 그러나 예수님은 그에게 “내 어머니와 형제가 누구냐?” 하시고
49 제자들을 가리키며 “보아라, 이들이 내 어머니와 형제들이다.
50 누구든지 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 뜻을 따라 사는 사람이 바로 내 형제와 자매이며 어머니이다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
하늘 나라의 비유
13 그 날 예수님은 집에서 나와 바닷가에 가서 앉으셨다.
2 너무 많은 군중이 모여들므로 예수님은 배에 올라 앉으시고 그들은 물가에 서 있었다.
3 그때 예수님은 여러 가지 비유를 들어 그들에게 많은 것을 말씀하셨다. “한 농부가 들에 나가
4 씨를 뿌렸다. 그런데 어떤 씨는 길가에 떨어져서 새들이 와서 먹어 버렸고
5 어떤 씨는 흙이 많지 않은 돌밭에 떨어져 흙이 깊지 않으므로 곧 싹이 나왔으나
6 해가 돋자 뿌리를 박지 못한 싹은 타서 말라 버렸다.
7 또 어떤 씨는 가시덤불에 떨어졌는데 가시나무가 자라 그 기운을 막았다.
8 그러나 어떤 씨는 좋은 땅에 떨어져 100배, 60배, 30배의 열매를 맺었다.
9 귀 있는 사람은 잘 들어라.”
10 제자들이 예수님께 와서 “저 사람들에게는 왜 비유로 말씀하십니까?” 하고 묻자
11 예수님은 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희에게는 하늘 나라의 비밀을 아는 것이 허락되었으나 저 사람들에게는 허락되지 않았다.
12 있는 사람에게는 더 주어 넘치게 하고 없는 사람은 가진 것까지도 빼앗길 것이다.
13 저들은 보아도 알지 못하고 들어도 깨닫지 못하므로 나는 저들에게 비유로 말한다.
14 그래서 다음과 같은 이사야의 예언은 저들에게 꼭 들어맞는 말이다. [ac]‘너희는 계속 들어도 깨닫지 못하고 계속 보아도 알지 못한다.
15 이 백성은 마음이 둔해졌고 귀는 먹었으며 눈까지 멀었다. 그렇지 않으면 그들이 눈으로 보고 귀로 듣고 마음으로 깨달아 돌아와서 나에게 고침을 받을지도 모른다.’
16 “그러나 너희는 눈으로 보고 귀로 들을 수 있으니 행복하다.
17 내가 분명히 말한다. 많은 예언자들과 의로운 사람들이 너희가 보는 것을 보고 싶어했으나 보지 못하였고 너희가 듣는 것을 듣고 싶어했으나 듣지 못하였다.
18 “너희는 씨 뿌리는 사람에 대한 비유의 뜻을 들어 보아라.
19 누구든지 하늘 나라의 말씀을 듣고도 깨닫지 못하면 [ad]사탄이 와서 그 마음에 뿌려진 것을 빼앗아 가 버린다. 이런 사람은 길가에 떨어진 씨와 같은 사람이다.
20 그리고 돌밭에 떨어진 씨는 말씀을 들을 때 기뻐하며 즉시 받아들이지만
21 [ae]그것을 마음속 깊이 간직하지 못하고 잠시 견디다가 그 말씀 때문에 고통이나 핍박이 오면 곧 넘어지는 사람이다.
22 또 가시덤불 속에 떨어진 씨는 말씀은 듣지만 이 세상 걱정과 재물에 대한 유혹 때문에 말씀대로 생활하지 못하는 사람을 말한다.
23 그러나 좋은 땅에 뿌려진 씨는 말씀을 듣고 깨닫는 사람을 가리킨다. 그런 사람은 100배, 60배, 또는 30배의 열매를 맺는다.”
24 예수님은 또 다른 비유를 들어 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “하늘 나라는 자기 밭에 좋은 씨앗을 뿌린 사람에 비할 수 있다.
25 사람들이 다 잠들었을 때 원수가 와서 밀밭에 [af]독보리를 덧뿌리고 갔다.
26 밀이 싹터서 자랄 때 독보리도 함께 자라는 것을 보고
27 종들이 주인에게 와서 ‘주인님, 밭에 좋은 씨앗을 뿌리지 않았습니까? 그런데 독보리가 어디서 생겨났습니까?’ 하고 물었다.
28 그러자 주인은 ‘원수가 이런 짓을 했구나’ 하고 대답하였다. 종들이 ‘그러면 우리가 가서 독보리를 뽑아 버릴까요?’ 하고 다시 묻자
29 주인은 이렇게 말하였다. ‘아니다. 독보리를 뽑다가 밀까지 뽑을까 걱정된다.
30 추수 때까지 둘 다 함께 자라도록 그냥 두어라. 추수 때에 내가 추수꾼들에게 먼저 독보리를 뽑아 단으로 묶어서 불태워 버리고 밀은 내 곳간에 모아들이게 하겠다.’ ”
31 예수님은 또 다른 비유로 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “하늘 나라는 어떤 사람이 자기 밭에 갖다 심은 겨자씨 한 알과 같다.
32 그것은 씨앗 중에 가장 작은 것이지만 모든 채소보다 더 크게 자라나 나무처럼 되어서 새들이 날아와 그 가지에 깃들인다.”
33 예수님은 또 다른 비유를 말씀하셨다. “하늘 나라는 어떤 여자가 [ag]한 포대의 밀가루에 섞어 전부 부풀게 한 누룩과 같다.”
34 예수님은 군중에게 이 모든 것을 비유로만 말씀하시고 비유가 아니면 아무것도 말씀하지 않으셨다.
35 이것은 다음과 같은 예언자의 예언을 이루기 위해서였다. [ah]“내가 비유를 들어 세상이 창조될 때부터 감추어진 것을 말하겠다.”
36 그 후 예수님이 군중과 헤어져 집에 들어가 있을 때 제자들이 와서 “밭의 독보리 비유를 자세히 설명해 주십시오” 하였다.
37 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. “좋은 씨를 뿌리는 농부는 [ai]나 그리스도이며
38 밭은 세상이다. 그리고 좋은 씨앗은 하늘 나라에 속한 사람들이고 독보리는 악한 자에게 속한 사람들이다.
39 독보리를 뿌린 원수는 마귀이며 추수 때는 세상 끝날이고 추수꾼은 천사들이다.
40 그러므로 독보리를 뽑아 불에 태우듯 세상 끝날에도 그렇게 할 것이다.
41 내가 천사들을 보내겠다. 그들은 죄 짓게 하는 모든 사람과 악을 행하는 사람들을 내 나라에서 모두 추려내어
42 불구덩이에 던져 넣을 것이다. 그러면 그 사람들이 거기서 통곡하며 이를 갈 것이다.
43 그때 의로운 사람들은 아버지의 나라에서 해같이 빛날 것이다. 귀 있는 사람은 잘 들어라.
44 “하늘 나라는 밭에 숨겨진 보물과 같다. 사람이 그것을 발견하면 다시 감추어 두고 기뻐하며 돌아가 가진 것을 다 팔아서 그 밭을 샀다.
45 “또 하늘 나라는 아름다운 진주를 구하는 장사꾼과 같다.
46 그가 아주 값진 진주 하나를 발견하고 가서 가진 것을 모두 팔아 그 진주를 샀다.
47 “또 하늘 나라는 바다에 던져 여러 종류의 물고기를 모으는 그물과 같다.
48 그물에 고기가 가득 차면 물가로 끌어내어 앉아서 좋은 것은 골라 그릇에 담고 나쁜 것은 버린다.
49 세상 끝날에도 이렇게 할 것이다. 천사들이 와서 의로운 사람들 가운데서 악한 사람들을 가려내어
50 불구덩이에 던져 넣을 것이다. 그러면 그들이 거기서 통곡하며 이를 갈 것이다.”
51 말씀을 마치시고 예수님이 그들에게 “이 모든 것을 이제 알겠느냐?” 하고 물으시자 제자들은 “예, 알겠습니다” 하고 대답하였다.
52 그러자 예수님은 그들에게 “그러므로 하늘 나라의 가르침을 받은 율법학자는 마치 자기 곳간에서 새 것과 낡은 것을 꺼내는 집 주인과 같다” 라고 하셨다.
목수의 아들이 아니냐
53 예수님은 이 비유들을 다 말씀하시고 나서 그 곳을 떠나
54 고향으로 가서 회당에서 가르치셨다. 사람들이 듣고 놀라 “이 사람의 이런 지혜와 기적을 행하는 능력이 어디서 났느냐?
55 이 사람은 목수의 아들이 아니냐? 그의 어머니는 마리아이고 야고보와 요셉과 시몬과 유다는 그의 동생들이다.
56 그리고 그의 누이동생들도 모두 우리와 함께 있지 않느냐? 그렇다면 이 사람은 이 모든 것을 어디서 얻었느냐?” 하면서
57 예수님을 배척하였다. 그러나 예수님은 그들에게 “예언자는 자기 고향과 집에서만 존경을 받지 못한다” 하시고
58 그들이 믿지 않으므로 거기서는 기적을 많이 베풀지 않으셨다.
세례 요한의 죽음
14 그때 그 지방을 다스리던 헤롯왕이 예수님의 소문을 듣고
2 신하들에게 말하였다. “그는 [aj]세례 요한이 분명하다. 그가 죽었다가 다시 살아났기 때문에 기적을 행하는 그런 능력을 소유하게 되었다.”
3 헤롯이 전에 동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아의 일로 요한을 잡아 가둔 일이 있었다.
4 그것은 요한이 헤롯에게 “당신이 그 여자와 결혼한 것은 잘못입니다” 하고 말했기 때문이었다.
5 헤롯은 요한을 죽이고 싶었으나 많은 사람들이 요한을 예언자로 여기고 있었으므로 그들을 두려워하였다.
6 마침 헤롯의 생일에 헤로디아의 딸이 손님들 앞에서 춤을 추어 헤롯을 기쁘게 하였다.
7 그러자 헤롯은 그녀가 요구하는 것은 무엇이든지 들어주겠다고 그녀에게 맹세하며 약속하였다.
8 그래서 그녀는 자기 어머니가 시키는 대로 “세례 요한의 머리를 쟁반에 담아 제게 주십시오” 하고 요구하였다.
9 왕은 몹시 괴로웠으나 자기가 한 맹세와 잔치 자리에 앉아 있는 손님들 때문에 그녀의 요구를 들어주라고 명령하고
10 사람을 보내 갇혀 있는 요한의 목을 베어 오게 하였다.
11 그리고 요한의 머리를 쟁반에 담아 소녀에게 주자 소녀는 그것을 자기 어머니에게 가져갔다.
12 요한의 제자들이 와서 시체를 가져다가 장사하고 예수님께 가서 이 일을 알렸다.
예수님이 오천 명을 먹이심
13 예수님은 이 말을 들으시고 혼자 배를 타고 조용한 곳으로 가셨다. 그러자 많은 사람들이 그 소문을 듣고 여러 마을에서 나와 걸어서 예수님을 따라갔다.
14 배에서 내린 예수님은 많은 군중을 보시고 불쌍히 여겨 병자들을 고쳐 주셨다.
15 저녁때가 되자 제자들이 예수님께 와서 말하였다. “이 곳은 벌판인데다가 날도 이미 저물었습니다. 사람들을 마을로 보내 각자 음식을 사 먹게 하십시오.”
16 “갈 것 없다. 너희가 저들에게 먹을 것을 주어라.”
17 “우리가 지금 가진 것이라고는 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리뿐입니다.”
18 “그것을 이리 가져오너라.”
19 그러고서 예수님은 군중들을 풀밭에 앉히시고 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 받아 들고 하늘을 우러러 감사 기도를 드리신 다음 떼어서 제자들에게 주셨다. 그래서 제자들은 그것을 군중들에게 나누어 주었다.
20 그들은 모두 실컷 먹고 남은 조각을 열두 광주리나 거뒀으며
21 먹은 사람은 여자와 아이들 외에 남자만 약 5,000명이었다.
22 예수님은 군중들을 돌려보내시는 동안 제자들이 서둘러 배를 타고 자기보다 먼저 건너편으로 가게 하셨다.
23 군중을 다 보내신 후에 예수님은 기도하시려고 혼자 산에 올라가셔서 날이 저물었는데도 그 곳에 홀로 계셨다.
24 그러나 배는 이미 육지를 떠나 상당히 멀리까지 갔는데, 바람이 휘몰아치므로 파도에 시달리고 있었다.
25 [ak]새벽 4시쯤 되어 예수님이 [al]바다 위로 걸어서 제자들에게 오셨다.
26 제자들은 예수님이 바다 위로 걸어오시는 것을 보고 무서워하며 “유령이다!” 하고 소리쳤다.
27 그러자 예수님은 즉시 “나다. 무서워하지 말고 안심하여라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
28 그때 베드로가 예수님께 “주님, 주님이시거든 저를 물 위로 걸어오라고 하십시오” 하였다.
29 예수님이 “오너라” 하시자 베드로가 배에서 내려 물 위로 걸어서 예수님을 향해 갔다.
30 그러나 그가 [am]파도를 보고 무서워하다가 물에 빠져들어가자 “주님, 살려 주십시오!” 하고 소리쳤다.
31 예수님이 즉시 손을 내밀어 그를 붙잡으시며 “믿음이 적은 사람아! 왜 의심하느냐?” 하시고
32 배에 함께 오르시자 바람이 멎었다.
33 그때 배에 있던 제자들이 예수님께 절하며 “주님은 참으로 하나님의 아들이십니다” 하였다.
34 그들은 바다를 건너 게네사렛 지방에 이르렀다.
35 그러자 그 곳 사람들이 예수님을 알아보고 주변 지역에 다 연락하여 모든 병자들을 예수님께 데려왔다.
36 사람들은 예수님의 옷자락이라도 만지게 해 달라고 간청하였으며 옷자락을 만진 사람은 모두 나았다.
사람을 더럽게 하는 것
15 그때 예루살렘에서 온 바리새파 사람들과 율법학자들이 예수님께 와서
2 “당신의 제자들은 왜 [an]조상들이 대대로 지켜 온 전통을 깨뜨리고 있습니까? 그들은 식사할 때 손을 씻지 않습니다” 하였다.
3 그래서 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 왜 너희 전통 때문에 하나님의 계명을 어기느냐?
4 하나님께서는 [ao]‘네 부모를 공경하라’ 하시고 또 [ap]‘부모를 저주하는 사람은 반드시 죽여야 한다’ 고 말씀하셨다.
5 그런데 너희는 누구든지 부모에게 드려야 할 것을 하나님께 드렸다고만 하면
6 부모를 공경하지 않아도 된다고 가르친다. 그러므로 너희는 그런 전통 때문에 하나님의 말씀을 헛되게 하였다.
7 위선자들아, 바로 너희와 같은 사람들을 두고 이사야가 다음과 같이 잘 예언하였다.
8 [aq]‘이 백성이 입술로는 나를 존경하나 마음은 내게서 멀리 떠나 있다.
9 그들은 사람이 만든 법을 마치 내 교훈인 것처럼 가르치고 있으니 나를 헛되이 예배하고 있다.’ ”
10 예수님은 군중들을 가까이 불러 “너희는 내 말을 듣고 깨달아라.
11 입으로 들어가는 것이 사람을 더럽히는 것이 아니라 입에서 나오는 것이 사람을 더럽힌다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
12 그때 제자들이 예수님께 와서 “주님, 바리새파 사람들이 이 말씀을 듣고 화가 난 것을 아십니까?” 하고 묻자
13 예수님은 이렇게 대답하셨다. “하늘에 계신 내 아버지께서 심지 않으신 나무는 모두 뽑힐 것이다. 그러니
14 내버려 두어라. 그들은 눈먼 인도자들이다. 소경이 소경을 인도하면 둘 다 구덩이에 빠질 것이다.”
15 이때 베드로가 “그 비유를 우리에게 설명해 주십시오” 하자
16 예수님은 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희도 아직 깨닫지 못하느냐?
17 입으로 들어가는 것은 모두 뱃속을 거쳐 몸 밖으로 빠져나간다는 것을 알지 못하느냐?
18 그러나 입에서 나오는 것은 마음에서 나오는 것이다. 이것이 사람을 더럽힌다.
19 마음에서 나오는 것은 악한 생각, 살인, 간음, 음란, 도둑질, 거짓 증언, 그리고 비방이다.
20 이런 것들이 사람을 더럽히는 것이며 씻지 않은 손으로 먹는 것은 사람을 더럽히는 것이 아니다.”
많은 기적을 베푸심
21 예수님은 그 곳을 떠나 두로와 시돈 지방으로 가셨다.
22 그때 그 지역에 사는 한 가나안 여자가 나아와서 “주님, 다윗의 후손이시여! 저를 불쌍히 여겨 주십시오. 제 딸이 악한 귀신이 들렸습니다” 하고 소리쳤다.
23 그러나 예수님이 아무 대답도 하지 않으시자 제자들이 예수님께 “저 여자가 소리치며 우리 뒤를 따라오고 있습니다. 쫓아 버리십시오” 하였다.
24 예수님이 그 여자에게 “나는 잃어버린 양과 같은 이스라엘 사람에게만 보냄을 받았다” 하시자
25 그 여자는 예수님 앞으로 와서 절하며 말
하였다. “주님, 저를 도와주십시오.”
26 “자녀들의 빵을 빼앗아 개에게 던지는 것은 옳지 않다.”
27 “주님, 맞습니다. 그러나 개도 주인의 상에서 떨어지는 부스러기를 먹습니다.”
28 “[ar]정말 네 믿음이 크구나! 네 소원대로 될 것이다.” 그러자 바로 그 순간에 그 여자의 딸이 나았다.
29 예수님은 그 곳을 떠나 갈릴리 호숫가를 따라 가시다가 산에 올라가 앉으셨다.
30 사람들이 앉은뱅이, 절뚝발이, 소경, 벙어리, 그 밖의 많은 병자들을 데리고 와서 예수님 앞에 앉히므로 예수님은 그들을 다 고쳐 주셨다.
31 벙어리가 말하고 절뚝발이가 성해지고 앉은뱅이가 걷고 소경이 눈을 뜨는 것을 보고 사람들은 놀라 이스라엘의 하나님을 찬양하였다.
32 그때 예수님이 제자들을 불러 말씀하셨다. “군중들이 나와 함께 있은 지가 벌써 3일이 되었는데 먹을 것이 없으니 가엾구나. 저들을 굶겨서 그대로 보내고 싶지는 않다. 그러다가는 길에서 쓰러질지도 모른다.”
33 “이 벌판에서 이처럼 많은 군중들을 배불리 먹일 만한 빵을 어디서 구할 수 있겠습니까?”
34 “너희에게 빵이 얼마나 있느냐?” “일곱 개 있습니다. 그리고 작은 물고기 몇 마리도 있습니다.”
35 예수님은 군중들을 땅에 앉히시고
36 빵 일곱 개와 그 물고기를 가지고 감사 기도를 드리신 다음 떼어서 제자들에게 주셨다. 그래서 제자들은 그것을 군중들에게 나누어 주었다.

기적을 보여 달라
16 바리새파 사람들과 사두개파 사람들이 예수님을 시험하려고 와서 하늘에서 오는 기적을 보여 달라고 하였다.
2 그러나 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희가 저녁에 하늘이 붉으면 날씨가 좋겠다고 말하고
3 아침에 하늘이 붉고 흐리면 날씨가 좋지 않겠다고 말한다. 이렇게 날씨는 분별할 줄 알면서 시대의 징조는 왜 분별하지 못하느냐?
4 악하고 음란한 세대가 기적을 요구하나 요나의 기적밖에는 보여 줄 것이 없다.” 그러고서 예수님은 그들을 떠나가 버리셨다.
5 제자들이 호수 건너편으로 가면서 잊어버리고 빵을 가져가지 못했다.
6 예수님이 제자들에게 “너희는 바리새파 사람들과 사두개파 사람들의 누룩을 조심하라” 하시자
7 제자들은 서로 의논하며 “우리가 빵을 가져오지 않았기 때문에 하시는 말씀이다” 하고 수군거렸다.
8 예수님은 그들이 수군거리는 것을 아시고 말씀하셨다. “믿음이 적은 사람들아, 왜 빵이 없다고 서로 의논하느냐?
9 아직도 너희는 깨닫지도, 기억하지도 못하느냐? 빵 다섯 개로 5,000명이 먹고 몇 광주리를 거두었으며
10 빵 일곱 개로 4,000명이 먹고 몇 광주리를 거두었느냐?
11 내가 빵에 대하여 말한 것이 아니라는 것을 왜 깨닫지 못하느냐? 너희는 바리새파 사람들과 사두개파 사람들의 누룩을 조심하라.”
12 그제야 제자들은 예수님이 빵의 누룩이 아니라 바리새파 사람들과 사두개파 사람들의 가르침을 조심하라고 말씀하신 것을 깨달았다.
나를 누구라고 생각하느냐
13 예수님은 가이사랴 빌립보 지방에 이르러 제자들에게 물으셨다. “사람들이 [as]나를 누구라고 하느냐?”
14 그러자 제자들이 이렇게 대답하였다. “어떤 사람은 [at]세례 요한이라고 하고 어떤 사람은 엘리야라고 하며 또 어떤 사람은 예레미야나 예언자들 중 한 사람이라고 합니다.”
15 “그러면 너희는 나를 누구라고 생각하느냐?” 하고 예수님이 다시 묻자
16 시몬 베드로가 “주님은 그리스도시며 살아 계신 하나님의 아들이십니다” 하고 대답하였다.
17 그래서 예수님이 베드로에게 말씀하셨다. “[au]요나의 아들 시몬아, 너는 행복한 사람이다. 이것을 너에게 알리신 분은 사람이 아니라 하늘에 계시는 내 아버지이시다.
18 너는 [av]베드로이다. 내가 이 반석 위에 내 교회를 세우겠다. [aw]지옥의 권세가 이기지 못할 것이다.
19 내가 하늘 나라의 열쇠를 너에게 주겠다. 네가 무엇이든지 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이며 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀릴 것이다.”
20 그러고서 예수님은 제자들에게 자기가 그리스도라는 것을 아무에게도 말하지 말라고 주의시키셨다.
21 그때부터 예수 그리스도께서는 제자들에게 자기가 예루살렘에 올라가 장로들과 대제사장들과 [ax]율법학자들에게 많은 고난을 받고 죽음을 당했다가 3일 만에 다시 살아나야 할 것을 비로소 밝히기 시작하셨다.
22 그러자 베드로가 예수님을 붙들고 “주님, 그럴 수 없습니다. 이런 일이 결코 일어나서는 안 됩니다” 하고 말렸다.
23 그러나 예수님은 돌이켜 베드로를 보시고 꾸짖으셨다. “사탄아, 썩 물러가거라! 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자이다. 네가 하나님의 일을 생각지 않고 사람의 일을 생각하고 있다.”
24 그러고서 예수님은 제자들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 버리고 제 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라.
25 자기 생명을 구하고자 하는 사람은 잃을 것이며 나를 위해 자기 생명을 버리는 사람은 얻을 것이다.
26 사람이 온 세상을 얻고도 자기 생명을 잃으면 무슨 유익이 있겠느냐? 사람이 자기 생명을 무엇과 바꿀 수 있겠느냐?
27 내가 천사들과 함께 아버지의 영광으로 올 것이다. 그때 내가 각 사람이 행한 대로 갚아 주겠다.
28 내가 분명히 말하지만 여기 서 있는 사람들 가운데 어떤 사람들은 죽기 전에 내가 하늘 나라의 왕으로 오는 것을 보게 될 것이다.”

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? 37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)
Jesus and John the Baptist(AU)
11 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples,(AV) he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[d]
2 When John,(AW) who was in prison,(AX) heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples 3 to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come,(AY) or should we expect someone else?”
4 Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[e] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.(AZ) 6 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”(BA)
7 As John’s(BB) disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness(BC) to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet?(BD) Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written:
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[g] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.(BG) 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.(BH) 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.(BI)
16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17 “‘We played the pipe for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18 For John came neither eating(BJ) nor drinking,(BK) and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’(BL) But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”
Woe on Unrepentant Towns(BM)
20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida!(BN) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,(BO) they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.(BP) 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.(BQ) 23 And you, Capernaum,(BR) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[h](BS) For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”(BT)
The Father Revealed in the Son(BU)
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father,(BV) Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(BW) 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me(BX) by my Father.(BY) No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.(BZ)
28 “Come to me,(CA) all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.(CB) 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,(CC) for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.(CD) 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”(CE)
Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(CF)(CG)
12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(CH) and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(CI)
3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(CJ) 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(CK) 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(CL) and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(CM) 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[i](CN) you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man(CO) is Lord of the Sabbath.”
9 Going on from that place, he went into their synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus,(CP) they asked him, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?”(CQ)
11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?(CR) 12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep!(CS) Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus.(CT)
God’s Chosen Servant
15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.(CU) 16 He warned them not to tell others about him.(CV) 17 This was to fulfill(CW) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
the one I love, in whom I delight;(CX)
I will put my Spirit on him,(CY)
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”[j](CZ)
Jesus and Beelzebul(DA)
22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.(DB) 23 All the people were astonished and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”(DC)
24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul,(DD) the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”(DE)
25 Jesus knew their thoughts(DF) and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan(DG) drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul,(DH) by whom do your people(DI) drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I drive out demons, then the kingdom of God(DJ) has come upon you.
29 “Or again, how can anyone enter a strong man’s house and carry off his possessions unless he first ties up the strong man? Then he can plunder his house.
30 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(DK) 31 And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.(DL) 32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age(DM) or in the age to come.(DN)
33 “Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.(DO) 34 You brood of vipers,(DP) how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks(DQ) what the heart is full of. 35 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”(DR)
The Sign of Jonah(DS)(DT)
38 Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign(DU) from you.”(DV)
39 He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.(DW) 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish,(DX) so the Son of Man(DY) will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.(DZ) 41 The men of Nineveh(EA) will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah,(EB) and now something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came(EC) from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.(ED) That is how it will be with this wicked generation.”
Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(EE)
46 While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother(EF) and brothers(EG) stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”
48 He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven(EH) is my brother and sister and mother.”
The Parable of the Sower(EI)(EJ)(EK)
13 That same day Jesus went out of the house(EL) and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat(EM) and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred,(EN) sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has ears, let them hear.”(EO)
10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”
11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven(EP) has been given to you,(EQ) but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(ER) 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand.(ES)
14 In them is fulfilled(ET) the prophecy of Isaiah:
“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’[k](EU)
16 But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.(EV) 17 For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see(EW) but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom(EX) and does not understand it, the evil one(EY) comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.(EZ) 22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth(FA) choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”(FB)
The Parable of the Weeds
24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(FC) a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.
27 “The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’
28 “‘An enemy did this,’ he replied.
“The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
29 “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”(FD)
The Parables of the Mustard Seed and the Yeast(FE)(FF)
31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(FG) a mustard seed,(FH) which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”(FI)
33 He told them still another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like(FJ) yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds[l] of flour(FK) until it worked all through the dough.”(FL)
34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable.(FM) 35 So was fulfilled(FN) what was spoken through the prophet:
“I will open my mouth in parables,
I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”[m](FO)
The Parable of the Weeds Explained
36 Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us the parable(FP) of the weeds in the field.”
37 He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.(FQ) 38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the people of the evil one,(FR) 39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest(FS) is the end of the age,(FT) and the harvesters are angels.(FU)
40 “As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man(FV) will send out his angels,(FW) and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. 42 They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(FX) 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun(FY) in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.(FZ)
The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like(GA) treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.(GB)
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like(GC) a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
The Parable of the Net
47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like(GD) a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds(GE) of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous(GF) 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(GG)
51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.
“Yes,” they replied.
52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
A Prophet Without Honor(GH)
53 When Jesus had finished these parables,(GI) he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue,(GJ) and they were amazed.(GK) “Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?(GL) Isn’t his mother’s(GM) name Mary, and aren’t his brothers(GN) James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took offense(GO) at him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home.”(GP)
58 And he did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith.
John the Baptist Beheaded(GQ)
14 At that time Herod(GR) the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,(GS) 2 and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist;(GT) he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison(GU) because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife,(GV) 4 for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.”(GW) 5 Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet.(GX)
6 On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for the guests and pleased Herod so much 7 that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted 10 and had John beheaded(GY) in the prison. 11 His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. 12 John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it.(GZ) Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(HA)(HB)
13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them(HC) and healed their sick.(HD)
15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”
16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17 “We have here only five loaves(HE) of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.(HF) Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water(HG)(HH)
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray.(HI) Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,”(HJ) they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage!(HK) It is I. Don’t be afraid.”(HL)
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,”(HM) he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”(HN)
34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak,(HO) and all who touched it were healed.
That Which Defiles(HP)
15 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”(HQ)
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’[n](HR) and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[o](HS) 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.(HT)’[p](HU)”
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them,(HV) but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”(HW)
12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”
13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted(HX) will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.[q](HY) If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”(HZ)
15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”(IA)
16 “Are you still so dull?”(IB) Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart,(IC) and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.(ID) 20 These are what defile a person;(IE) but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman(IF)
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon.(IG) 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,(IH) have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”(II)
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”(IJ)
25 The woman came and knelt before him.(IK) “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith!(IL) Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.
Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand(IM)(IN)(IO)
29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.(IP) 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel.(IQ)
32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I have compassion for these people;(IR) they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.”
33 His disciples answered, “Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?”
34 “How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
