1 존경하는 데오빌로 각하에게: [a]예수님이 하신 일을 처음부터 목격하고 그분의 말
2 씀을 직접 들은 사람들이 우리 가운데 전한 말을 그대로 기록하려고 붓을 든 사람이 많습니다.
3 나도 이 모든 일을 처음부터 자세히 조사해 보았으므로 데오빌로 각하에게 차례대로 써 보내는 것이 좋을 것이라고 생각했습니다.
4 그래서 내가 각하께서 이미 들으신 일들이 사실임을 알게 하려고 이 글을 드립니다.
천사가 사가랴에게 나타남
5 헤롯이 유대 왕으로 있을 때 아비야 반에 사가랴란 제사장이 있었는데 그의 아내 엘리사벳도 아론의 후손이었다.
6 이들 부부는 하나님이 보시기에 의로운 사람들이었으며 주의 모든 계명과 규정을 빈틈없이 지켰다.
7 그러나 엘리사벳은 임신을 못하는 몸이어서 그들에게는 아기가 없었고 두 사람이 모두 나이가 많았다.
8 사가랴가 자기 반의 차례에 따라 하나님 앞에서 제사장의 직무를 수행할 때였다.
9 제사장직의 관습대로 제비를 뽑은 결과 사가랴가 성전에 들어가 분향하는 일을 맡게 되었다.
10 그리고 그가 분향하는 동안 많은 사람들이 밖에서 기도하고 있었다.
11 그때 주의 천사가 사가랴에게 나타나 향단 오른쪽에 서자
12 그는 천사를 보고 놀라며 무서워하였다.
13 그러나 천사는 그에게 이렇게 말하였다. “사가랴야, 두려워하지 말아라. 하나님께서 네 기도를 들으셨다. 네 아내 엘리사벳이 아들을 낳을 것이니 ‘요한’ 이라고 불러라.
14 너도 기쁘고 즐겁겠지만 많은 사람들이 그가 태어난 것을 기뻐할 것이다.
15 그 아기는 주 앞에서 위대한 사람이 될 것이며 포도주와 독한 술을 마시지 않을 것이다. 그리고 그는 [b]모태에 있을 때부터 성령이 충만하여
16 많은 이스라엘 사람을 그들의 주 하나님께로 돌아오게 할 것이다.
17 그는 엘리야의 정신과 능력을 가지고 주님보다 먼저 와서 [c]아버지의 마음이 자녀들에게 돌아서게 하고 순종치 않는 사람들이 의로운 사람의 지혜를 갖게 하여 백성들이 주님을 맞이할 준비를 갖추게 할 것이다.”
18 사가랴가 천사에게 “나는 늙었고 내 아내도 나이가 많은데 어떻게 이런 일이 있을 수 있습니까?” 하고 묻자
19 천사가 대답하였다. “나는 하나님을 모시고 있는 가브리엘이다. 하나님께서 이 기쁜 소식 을
너에게 알리라고 나를 보내셨다.
20 네가 내 말을 믿지 않았으므로 이런 일이 일어날 때까지 벙어리가 되어 말을 못할 것이다. 그러나 때가 되면 내 말이 그대로 이루어질 것이다.”
21 사람들은 사가랴를 기다리다가 그가 성전 안에 너무 오래 있는 것을 이상하게 여겼다.
22 사가랴가 드디어 밖으로 나왔으나 말을 하지 못하므로 사람들은 그가 성전 안에서 환상을 본 줄로 알았다. 사가랴는 사람들에게 손짓만 하고 말을 하지 못한 채 그대로 있다가
23 그의 직무 기간이 끝난 다음에 집으로 돌아갔다.
24 그 후에 그의 아내 엘리사벳은 임신하여 다섯 달 동안 숨어 지내면서
25 “이처럼 주께서 나를 보살펴 주셔서 나에게 아이를 주심으로 모든 사람들이 다 아는 내 부끄러움을 씻어 주셨다” 하였다.
마리아에게 아들을 약속함
26 엘리사벳이 임신한 지 여섯 달이 되었을 때 하나님께서는 가브리엘 천사를 갈릴리 나사렛이라는 마을에 사는
27 다윗의 후손 요셉과 약혼한 처녀 마리아에게 보내셨다.
28 천사가 그 집에 들어가 마리아에게 “은혜를 받은 처녀여, 기뻐하여라. 주님께서 너와 함께 계신다” 라고 하였다.
29 마리아는 이런 인사말이 무슨 뜻인지 몰라 어리둥절하였다.
30 그러자 천사가 말하였다. “마리아야, 무서워하지 말아라. 너는 하나님의 은혜를 받았다.
31 이제 네가 임신하여 아들을 낳을 것이다. 이름을 ‘예수’ 라고 불러라.
32 그는 위대한 인물이 될 것이며 가장 높으신 하나님의 아들이라고 불릴 것이다. 주 하나님께서 그의 조상 다윗의 보좌를 그에게 주실 것이니
33 그가 영원히 야곱의 집을 다스릴 것이며 그의 나라는 끝없이 계속될 것이다.”
34 마리아가 천사에게 “저는 처녀인데 어떻게 이런 일이 있을 수 있겠습니까?” 하고 묻자
35 천사가 이렇게 대답하였다. “성령님이 네 위에 내려오시고 하나님의 능력이 너를 덮어 주실 것이다. 그러므로 태어나실 거룩한 분은 하나님의 아들이라고 불릴 것이다.
36 네 친척 엘리사벳을 보아라. 그녀는 아이를 낳지 못하는 여자로 알려졌으나 그처럼 늙은 나이에도 임신한 지 여섯 달이나 되었다.
37 하나님에게는 불가능한 일이 아무것도 없다.”
38 그때 마리아가 “저는 주의 종입니다. 말씀하신 대로 되기를 바랍니다” 하고 말하였다. 그러자 천사는 떠나갔다.
39 그 후에 마리아는 유대 산골 사가랴가 사는 마을로 급히 가서
40 엘리사벳을 방문하였다.
41 엘리사벳이 마리아의 인사하는 소리를 듣는 순간 엘리사벳의 태중의 아기가 뛰었다. 엘리사벳은 성령으로 충만하여
42 큰 소리로 이렇게 말하였다. “너는 여자들 중에 가장 복받은 사람이며 네 태중의 [d]아기도 복받은 분이다.
43 내 주님의 어머니가 나를 찾아오다니 이 얼마나 영광스러운 일인가!
44 네가 인사하는 소리를 듣는 순간 내 태중의 아기가 기뻐서 뛰었다.
45 주께서 말씀하신 것이 이루어질 것을 믿은 여자는 정말 행복하다.”
46 그러자 마리아는 이렇게 노래하였다. “내 영혼이 주를 찬양하며
47 내 마음이 내 구주 하나님을 기뻐하는 것은
48 그가 이 천한 종을 돌아보셨음이라. 지금부터는 모든 세대가 나를 행복하다 하겠네.
49 능력 있는 분이 나를 위해 큰 일을 하셨으니 그의 이름 거룩하여라!
50 그를 두려워하는 사람들에게 자손 대대로 자비를 베푸시는구나.
51 그가 권능의 팔을 펴서 교만한 자들을 흩으시고
52 권력자들을 높은 자리에서 끌어내리셨지만 낮고 천한 사람들은 높여 주셨네.
53 굶주린 사람들에게는 좋은 것으로 배불리 먹이셨으나 부자들은 빈손으로 보내셨네.
54 그의 종 이스라엘에게 자비 베푸는 것을 잊지 않으시고 기억하여 그를 도우셨으니
55 우리 조상들에게 말씀하신 대로 아브라함과 그 후손에게 하신 영원한 약속이었네.”
56 마리아는 엘리사벳의 집에서 석 달 동안 지내다가 자기 집으로 돌아갔다.
세례 요한의 출생
57 엘리사벳은 달이 차서 아들을 낳았다.
58 이웃과 친척들은 주님께서 엘리사벳에게 큰 자비를 베푸셨다는 소식을 듣고 함께 기뻐하였다.
59 아기가 난 지 8일 만에 [e]할례식이 베풀어졌다. 식에 참석한 사람들은 아버지의 이름을 따서 아기 이름을 사가랴로 부르려고 하였다.
60 그러나 아기 어머니는 “아니오, 요한이라고 불러야 합니다” 하고 대답하였다.
61 사람들이 “친척 중에는 이런 이름을 가진 사람이 없는데” 하며
62 사가랴에게 손짓으로 아기 이름을 뭐라고 지었으면 좋겠느냐고 물었다.
63 사가랴가 필기 도구를 달라고 하여 아기 이름을 ‘요한’ 이라고 쓰자 사람들은 모두 놀랐다.
64 바로 그 순간에 사가랴의 입이 열리고 혀가 풀려서 말을 하게 되어 하나님을 찬양하였다.
65 그래서 이웃 사람들이 다 두려워하였고 또 이 소문이 온 유대 산골에 쫙 퍼졌다.
66 그리고 듣는 사람마다 모두 이 말을 마음에 새기며 “이 아기가 앞으로 어떤 사람이 될까?” 하고 말했는데 이것은 주의 손길이 그 아기와 함께하였기 때문이었다.
67 아기 아버지 사가랴는 성령님의 감동을 받아 이렇게 예언하였다.
68 “이스라엘의 주 하나님을 찬양하여라. 그가 오셔서 자기 백성을 [f]죄에서 건져 주셨고
69 그의 종 다윗의 집에서 우리를 위하여 [g]구원의 주를 일으키셨으니
70 오래 전에 그의 거룩한 예언자들을 통해서 말씀하신 대로
71 우리 원수들과 우리를 미워하는 모든 사람들의 손에서 우리를 구원하는 구원이라.
72 그가 우리 조상들에게 자비를 베풀고 그의 거룩한 계약을 기억하겠다고 말씀하셨으며
73 우리 조상 아브라함에게 엄숙하게 맹세하심으로
74 우리를 원수들의 손에서 구해 내고
75 우리가 주 앞에서 일평생 두려움 없이 거룩함과 의로움으로 주를 섬기게 하겠다고 약속하셨다.
76 “아가야, 너는 가장 높으신 하나님의 예언자가 될 것이다. 너는 주님보다 미리 와서 그의 길을 준비하여
77 죄를 용서받음으로써 얻는 구원의 길을 그의 백성들에게 전할 것이다.
78 이 모든 일은 우리 하나님의 자비로 된 것이니 하늘에서 떠오르는 태양이 우리를 찾아와
79 어두움과 죽음의 그늘에 사는 사람들을 비추고 우리를 평화의 길로 인도하리라.”
80 아기는 무럭무럭 자라 마음이 굳세어지고 이스라엘 백성들 앞에 나타날 때까지 광야에서 살았다. 예수님의 탄생
2 그 무렵 아우구스투스황제가 로마 제국 전역에 인구 조사를 하라는 명령을 내 렸다.
2 이 인구 조사는 구레뇨가 시리아의 총독으로 있을 때 처음으로 실시한 것이었다.
3 그래서 사람들은 본적지에 등록하려고 모두 고향으로 돌아갔다.
4 요셉도 다윗의 집안 사람이었으므로 갈릴리 나사렛에서 다윗의 마을인 유대 베들레헴으로 올라갔다.
5 요셉이 약혼한 마리아와 함께 본적지에 등록하러 갈 때 마리아는 이미 임신중이었는데
6 그들이 베들레헴에 도착했을 때 해산 날이 찼다.
7 여관에는 사람이 다 차서 있을 곳이 없었으므로 그들은 마구간에 머물게 되었다. 거기서 마리아는 첫아들을 낳아 포대기에 싸서 구유에 뉘었다.
8 바로 그 부근 들판에는 목자들이 밤을 새워가며 양떼를 지키고 있었다.
9 그때 갑자기 천사가 나타나 그들 곁에 서고 주의 영광의 광채가 그들 주변에 비치었다. 이 광경을 보고 목자들이 몹시 무서워하자
10 천사가 그들에게 말하였다. “무서워하지 말아라. 내가 너희에게 모든 백성들이 크게 기뻐할 좋은 소식을 알린다.
11 오늘 밤 다윗의 동네에 너희를 위하여 구주가 나셨으니 그분이 곧 [h]그리스도 주님이시다.
12 그 증거로서 너희는 포대기에 싸여 구유에 뉘어 있는 갓난아기를 볼 것이다.”
13 그러자 갑자기 수많은 하늘의 군대가 나타나 그 천사와 함께
14 “가장 높은 하늘에서는 하나님께 영광! 땅에서는 하나님의 은총을 받은 사람들에게 평화!” 하며 하나님을 찬송하였다.
15 천사들이 떠나 하늘로 올라간 뒤에 목자들이 “자, 어서 베들레헴으로 가서 주님께서 알려 주신 일을 보자” 하며
16 달려가 보니 갓난아기가 구유에 뉘어 있었고 마리아와 요셉도 함께 있었다.
17 아기를 본 목자들이 천사들에게 들은 말을 여러 사람들에게 이야기하자
18 듣는 사람들이 다 목자들의 말에 놀라는 표정이었으나
19 마리아는 이 모든 말을 마음에 새겨 깊이 생각하였다.
20 목자들은 듣고 본 모든 일이 천사들에게 들은 것과 같았으므로 하나님께 영광을 돌리고 찬송하면서 돌아갔다.
21 아기가 난 지 8일 만인 [i]할례식 날 천사가 전에 일러 준 대로 그 이름을 ‘예수’ 라고 지었다.
22 모세의 법대로 아기에게 정결 의식을 행하는 날이 되었다. 그래서 부모가 아기를 데리고 예루살렘으로 올라갔다.
23-24 이것은 주님의 율법에 [j]“첫아들을 거룩하게 구별하여 주께 드려라” 고 기록된 말씀대로 아기를 주님께 드리고 또 주님의 율법에 말씀하신 대로 [k]“산비둘기 두 마리나 집비둘기 새끼 두 마리” 로 제사를 드리기 위해서였다.
25-26 그때 예루살렘에 시므온이란 의롭고 경건한 사람이 살고 있었다. 그는 함께 계신 성령님으로부터 살아서 그리스도를 뵈올 것이라는 계시를 받고 이스라엘의 위로가 되실 그분을 간절히 기다리고 있었다.
27 시므온이 성령님의 인도로 성전에 들어가자 마침 부모가 정결 의식을 행하려고 아기 예수를 데리고 들어왔다.
28 시므온은 아기를 안고 이렇게 하나님을 찬양하였다.
29 “주권자이신 주님, 이제는 약속하신 대로 이 종을 놓아 주셔서 내가 평안히 떠날 수 있게 되었습니다.
30 내 눈으로 직접 본 주님의 이 구원은
31 모든 사람들에게 베푸신 것으로
32 이방인들에게는 [l]주님의 뜻을 보여 주는 빛이며 주님의 백성 이스라엘에게는 영광된 것입니다.”
33 그 부모는 아기에 대한 말을 듣고 신기하게 여겼다.
34 시므온은 그들에게 축복하고 아기 어머니 마리아에게 이런 말을 하였다. “이 아기는 하나님이 세우신 자입니다. 많은 이스라엘 사람들은 이 아기를 믿지 않아 망하기도 하고 믿어서 구원을 받기도 할 것입니다. 그리고 이 아기는 사람들의 비난의 대상이 될 것이며
35 그때 당신은 마치 예리한 칼에 찔리듯 마음이 아플 것입니다. 그러나 그들의 숨겨진 생각은 다 드러날 것입니다.”
36 또 안나라는 나이 많은 예언자가 있었다. 그녀는 아셀 지파에 속한 바누엘의 딸이었는데 결혼하여 7년 동안 살다가
37 과부가 되었다. 그로부터 그녀는 [m]여든 네 살이 되기까지 성전을 떠나지 않고 밤낮 금식하고 기도하며 하나님을 섬겼다.
38 마침 이 시간에 그녀는 성전에 들어와서 하나님께 감사를 드리고 [n]구세주를 기다리는 모든 사람에게 아기 예수님에 대한 이야기를 해 주었다.
나사렛 귀환
39 아기의 부모는 율법에 따라 모든 의식을 마치고 고향인 갈릴리 나사렛으로 돌 아갔다.
40 아기는 하나님의 은혜 가운데서 무럭무럭 자라나 튼튼해지고 지혜가 넘쳤다.
41 해마다 [o]유월절이 되면 예수님의 부모는 예루살렘으로 올라갔다.
42 예수님이 열두 살 되던 해에도 그들은 전과 같이 예루살렘으로 올라갔다.
43 명절 기간이 끝나고 집으로 돌아갈 때 어린 예수님은 예루살렘에 그냥 머물러 있었다. 부모는 이것도 모르고
44 예수님이 일행 가운데 있으려니 하고 하룻길을 간 후에 친척들과 아는 사람들 가운데서 찾아보았다.
45 그러나 찾지 못하자 그들은 예수님을 찾으러 예루살렘으로 되돌아갔다.
46 그들은 3일 후에 성전에서 예수님을 만났다. 그는 선생들 가운데 앉아서 듣기도 하고 묻기도 했으며
47 그의 말을 듣는 사람들은 다 그의 총명함과 대답하는 말에 감탄하였다.
48 그리고 그의 부모도 그를 보고 놀랐다. 이때 예수님의 어머니가 “얘야, 이게 무슨 짓이냐? 네 아버지와 내가 너를 찾느라고 무척이나 애썼단다” 하자
49 예수님은 “왜 나를 찾으셨습니까? 내가 내 아버지의 집에 있어야 한다는 것을 모르셨습니까?” 하고 대답하였다.
50 그러나 부모는 그 말뜻을 깨닫지 못하였다.
51 그러고서 예수님은 함께 나사렛으로 돌아가 부모에게 순종하며 살았고 그의 어머니는 이 모든 일을 마음에 새겨 두었다.
52 예수님은 지혜와 키가 점점 자라고 하나님과 사람들에게 더욱 사랑을 받았다.
요한의 전도 시작
3 로마의 티베리우스황제가 다스린 지 15년째가 되던 해에 본디오 빌라도는 유대 총독으로 있었다. 그리고 헤롯은 갈릴리 지방의 왕으로, 그의 형제 빌립은 이두래와 드라고닛 지방의 왕으로, 루사니아는 아빌레네 지방의 왕으로 있었으며
2 안나스와 가야바는 대제사장으로 있었다. 바로 그 무렵 하나님의 말씀이 광야에 있는 사가랴의 아들 요한에게 들려왔다.
3 요한은 요단강 부근의 여러 지방을 다니며 죄를 용서받게 하려고 회개의 [p]세례를 전파하였다.
4 이것은 예언자 이사야의 책에 기록된 말씀과 같다. [q]“광야에서 어떤 사람의 외치는 소리가 들린다. ‘너희는 주를 위해 길을 준비하라. 그의 길을 곧게 하라.
5 모든 골짜기가 메워지고 모든 산이 낮아질 것이며 굽은 길이 곧아지고 험한 길이 평평해지며
6 모든 사람이 하나님의 구원을 볼 것이다.’ ”
7 요한은 세례받으러 나오는 사람들을 이렇게 꾸짖었다. “독사의 자식들아! 누가 너희더러 앞으로 내릴 하나님의 [r]무서운 벌을 피하라고 했느냐?
8 너희는 진정으로 회개했다는 것을 보여 줄 만한 바른 행동을 하라. 그리고 속으로라도 ‘아브라함이 우리 조상이다’ 라고 말하지 말아라. 하나님께서는 이 돌들을 가지고도 아브라함의 후손이 되게 하실 수 있다.
9 도끼가 이미 나무 뿌리에 놓였으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 않는 나무는 다 찍혀 불에 던져질 것이다.”
10 사람들이 요한에게 “그렇다면 우리가 어떻게 해야 되겠습니까?” 하고 물었다.
11 그래서 요한은 그들에게 “옷을 두 벌 가진 사람은 없는 사람과 나누어 갖고 먹을 것도 그와 같이 나누어 먹어야 한다” 하고 대답하였다.
12 세무원들도 세례를 받으러 와서 요한에게 “선생님, 우리는 무엇을 해야 합니까?” 하고 묻자
13 요한은 그들에게 “정해진 세금 외에는 더 받지 말아라” 하였다.
14 군인들도 와서 “우리는 무엇을 해야 합니까?” 하고 물었다. 그때 요한은 그들에게 “남의 것을 강제로 빼앗거나 이유 없이 다른 사람을 고소하지 말고 자기가 받는 봉급을 만족하게 여겨라” 하고 대답하였다.
15 백성들은 [s]메시아를 무척 기다리고 있었으므로 혹시 요한이 그가 아닌가 하고 모두 속으로 생각하고 있었다.
16 그래서 요한은 그들에게 이렇게 말하였다. “나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 준다. 그러나 나보다 더 능력이 많으신 분이 곧 오시는데 나는 그분의 신발끈을 풀어 드릴 자격도 없다. 그분은 너희에게 성령과 불로 세례를 주실 것이며
17 자기 타작 마당에서 모든 곡식을 키질하여 알곡은 곳간에 모아들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우실 것이다.”
18 그 외에도 요한은 백성들에게 여러 가지 말로 권면하고 그들에게 기쁜 소식을 전파하였다.
19 그러나 헤롯왕은 자기 동생의 아내인 헤로디아와 결혼한 일과 그 밖에 그가 저지른 모든 악한 일로 요한에게 책망을 받고도
20 뉘우치기는커녕 오히려 그를 붙잡아 감옥에 가둬 버렸다.
21 모든 사람들이 [t]세례를 받을 때 예수님도 세례를 받으셨다. 그러고서 예수님이 기도하시자 하늘이 열리고
22 성령님이 그에게 비둘기와 같은 모양으로 내려오셨다. 그리고 하늘에서 “너는 내가 사랑하고 기뻐하는 내 아들이다” 라는 음성이 들려왔다.
예수님의 족보
23 예수님이 기쁜 소식을 전하기 시작하신 때는 30세쯤 되셨다. 예수님은 요셉의 아들로 알려져 있었다. 요셉의 아버지는 [u]헬리,
24 헬리의 아버지는 맛닷, 맛닷의 아버지는 레위, 레위의 아버지는 멜기, 멜기의 아버지는 얀나, 얀나의 아버지는 요셉이었다.
25 요셉의 아버지는 맛다디아, 맛다디아의 아버지는 아모스, 아모스의 아버지는 나훔, 나훔의 아버지는 [v]에슬리, 에슬리의 아버지는 낙개였다.
26 낙개의 아버지는 마앗, 마앗의 아버지는 맛다디아, 맛다디아의 아버지는 서머인, 서머인의 아버지는 요섹, 요섹의 아버지는 요다였다.
27 요다의 아버지는 요아난, 요아난의 아버지는 레사, 레사의 아버지는 스룹바벨, 스룹바벨의 아버지는 [w]스알디엘, 스알디엘의 아버지는 네리였다.
28 네리의 아버지는 멜기, 멜기의 아버지는 앗디, 앗디의 아버지는 고삼, 고삼의 아버지는 엘마담, 엘마담의 아버지는 에르였다.
29 에르의 아버지는 예수, 예수의 아버지는 엘리에서, 엘리에서의 아버지는 요림, 요림의 아버지는 맛닷, 맛닷의 아버지는 레위였다.
30 레위의 아버지는 시므온, 시므온의 아버지는 유다, 유다의 아버지는 요셉, 요셉의 아버지는 요남, 요남의 아버지는 엘리아김이었다.
31 엘리아김의 아버지는 멜레아, 멜레아의 아버지는 멘나, 멘나의 아버지는 맛다다, 맛다다의 아버지는 나단, 나단의 아버지는 다윗이었다.
32 다윗의 아버지는 이새, 이새의 아버지는 오벳, 오벳의 아버지는 보아스, 보아스의 아버지는 [x]살몬, 살몬의 아버지는 나손이었다.
33 나손의 아버지는 암미나답, [y]암미나답의 아버지는 람, 람의 아버지는 헤스론, 헤스론의 아버지는 베레스, 베레스의 아버지는 유다였다.
34 유다의 아버지는 야곱, 야곱의 아버지는 이삭, 이삭의 아버지는 아브라함, 아브라함의 아버지는 데라, 데라의 아버지는 나홀이었다.
35 나홀의 아버지는 스룩, 스룩의 아버지는 [z]르우, 르우의 아버지는 벨렉, 벨렉의 아버지는 [aa]에벨, 에벨의 아버지는 [ab]셀라였다.
36 셀라의 아버지는 가이난, 가이난의 아버지는 아르박삿, 아르박삿의 아버지는 셈, 셈의 아버지는 노아, 노아의 아버지는 라멕이었다.
37 라멕의 아버지는 므두셀라, 므두셀라의 아버지는 에녹, 에녹의 아버지는 야렛, 야렛의 아버지는 마할랄렐, 마할랄렐의 아버지는 가이난이었다.
38 가이난의 아버지는 에노스, 에노스의 아버지는 셋, 셋의 아버지는 아담, 아담의 아버지는 하나님이셨다.
4 예수님은 성령이 충만하여 요단강에서 돌아오셨다. 그리고 성령님의 인도로 광야에 나가
예수님이 시험받으심
2 40일 동안 마귀에게 시험을 받으셨다. 예수님은 그 동안 아무것도 잡수시지 않아서 그 기간이 끝났을 때는 몹시 시장하셨다.
3 바로 그때 마귀가 예수님께 말하였다. “네가 하나님의 아들이라면 이 돌을 빵이 되게 하라.”
4 그러나 예수님은 마귀에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “성경에는 [ac]‘사람이 빵으로만 살아서는 안 된다’ 라고 쓰여 있다.”
5 그러자 마귀는 예수님을 높은 곳으로 데려가 잠깐 사이에 세상의 모든 나라를 보여 주면서
6 말하였다. “내가 이 모든 나라의 권세와 영광을 너에게 주겠다. 이것은 나에게 주어진 것이므로 내가 주고 싶은 사람에게 줄 수 있는 것이다.
7 그러므로 네가 나에게 절하면 이 모든 것이 네 것이 될 것이다.”
8 그때 예수님이 말씀하셨다. “성경에는 [ad]‘주 너의 하나님을 경배하고 그분만을 섬겨라’ 고 쓰여 있다.”
9 또다시 마귀는 예수님을 예루살렘으로 데리고 가서 성전 꼭대기에 세우고 이렇게 말하였다. “네가 하나님의 아들이라면 여기서 뛰어내려 보아라.
10 성경에는 [ae]‘하나님이 천사들에게 명령하여 너를 지키게 하실 것이니
11 천사들이 손으로 너를 붙들어 네 발이 돌에 부딪히지 않게 할 것이다’ 라고 쓰여 있다.”
12 그래서 예수님은 마귀에게 “성경에는 [af]‘주 너의 하나님을 시험하지 말라’ 고 기록되어 있다” 하고 대답하셨다.
13 마귀는 이 모든 시험을 다 한 후에 [ag]적절한 시기가 올 때까지 잠시 예수님을 떠나갔다.
예수님이 가르치기 시작하심
14 예수님이 성령님의 능력을 받아 갈릴리로 돌아오시자 이 소문이 사방에 퍼졌다.
15 예수님은 여러 회당에서 가르치시며 모든 사람에게 영광을 받으셨다.
16 예수님은 자라나신 고향 나사렛으로 가셔서 전에 하시던 대로 안식일에 회당에 들어가셨다. 그리고 성경을 읽으려고 일어나서
17 이사야의 예언서를 받아 이렇게 쓰인 곳을 찾아 읽으셨다.
18 [ah]“주께서 나를 성령으로 충만하게 하셨으니 가난한 사람에게 기쁜 소식을 전하게 하시려고 [ai]나를 택하여 보내셨다. 그가 나를 보내신 것은 [aj]마음 상한 자를 고치고 포로에게 자유를 선포하며 눈먼 사람을 다시 보게 하고 짓눌린 사람을 풀어 주며
19 주께서 은혜 베푸실 때를 전파하도록 하기 위해서이다.”
20 예수님이 그 책을 덮어 회당 직원에게 되돌려 주고 앉으시자 그 곳에 모였던 사람들의 눈길이 다 예수님에게로 쏠렸다.
21 그때 예수님은 그들에게 “이제 읽은 성경 말씀이 오늘날 너희에게 이루어졌다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
22 그러자 모두 예수님에 대하여 감탄하고 그 은혜스러운 말씀에 놀라면서 “이 사람은 요셉의 아들이 아니냐?” 하고 수군거렸다.
23 그래서 예수님이 그들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희는 틀림없이 ‘의사야, 네 병이나 고쳐라’ 는 속담을 들어 너희가 들은 일, 곧 내가 가버나움에서 행한 기적을 이 곳 고향에서도 해 보라고 나에게 말할 것이다.
24 내가 분명히 말하지만 예언자가 자기 고향에서는 환영을 받지 못한다.
25 엘리야 시대에 이스라엘에는 3년 반 동안 비가 내리지 않아 온 나라에 큰 흉년이 든 일이 있었다. 그때 거기에는 많은 과부가 있었지만
26 하나님께서는 오직 시돈의 사렙다에 사는 한 과부에게만 엘리야를 보내셨다.
27 또 예언자 엘리사 시대에는 이스라엘에 많은 문둥병자가 있었으나 한 사람도 깨끗함을 받지 못하고 오직 시리아 사람 나아만만 고침을 받았다.”
28 회당에 있던 모든 사람들이 이 말을 듣고 분개하여
29 일어나 예수님을 산 위에 세워진 그 마을 밖 벼랑까지 끌고 가서 던져 버리려고 하였다.
30 그러나 예수님은 의연하게 그들 가운데로 지나서 가 버리셨다.
31 예수님이 갈릴리 가버나움으로 내려가 안식일에 회당에서 권위 있는 말씀으로 가르치시자
32 사람들은 모두 놀랐다.
33 마침 그 회당에 더러운 귀신 들린 사람 하나가 있었다. 그가 크게 소리를 지르며
34 “나사렛 예수님, 우리가 당신과 무슨 상관이 있습니까? 우리를 없애려고 오셨습니까? 나는 당신이 하나님의 거룩한 아들임을 압니다” 하고 외쳤다.
35 예수님이 그를 꾸짖으며 “떠들지 말고 그 사람에게서 나오너라” 하시자 귀신이 사람들 앞에 그를 내동댕이치고 나가 버렸다. 그러나 그에게 상처는 입히지 않았다.
36 사람들이 이 광경을 보고 모두 놀라 “이게 도대체 어떻게 된 일이냐? 권위와 능력으로 명령하니 귀신들이 당장 쫓겨 나가는군!” 하며 수군거렸다.
37 그래서 예수님의 소문이 그 일대에 널리 퍼졌다.
38 예수님은 회당을 떠나 시몬의 집으로 가셨다. 그때 시몬의 장모가 심한 열병을 앓고 있었기 때문에 사람들은 그녀를 고쳐 달라고 예수님께 간청하였다.
39 예수님이 여자를 굽어보시며 열병을 꾸짖으시자 곧 열이 내리고 시몬의 장모는 즉시 일어나 예수님의 일행에게 시중을 들었다.
40 해 질 무렵에 사람들이 온갖 병자들을 데리고 오자 예수님은 그들에게 일일이 손을 얹어 고쳐 주셨다.
41 그리고 귀신들도 “당신은 하나님의 아들이십니다” 하고 외치며 많은 사람에게서 떠나갔다. 이렇게 귀신들도 예수님이 [ak]그리스도라는 것을 알고 있었기 때문에 예수님은 그들을 꾸짖으며 귀신들이 말하는 것을 허락하지 않으셨다.
42 날이 밝자 예수님은 마을을 떠나 외딴 곳으로 가셨다. 한편 사람들은 예수님을 찾다가 만나자 자기들에게서 떠나지 못하게 하려고 하였다.
43 그러나 예수님은 그들에게 “나는 다른 여러 마을에도 하나님 나라의 기쁜 소식을 전해야 한다. 하나님께서는 이 일을 위해 나를 보내셨다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
44 그러고서 예수님은 계속 [al]유대 여러 회당에서 전도하셨다.
5 예수님이 [am]게네사렛 호숫가에서 말씀하실 때 많은 사람들이 하나님의 말씀을 들으려고 밀려왔다.
제자들을 부르심
2 그때 호숫가에는 배 두 척이 있었고 어부들은 배에서 내려 그물을 씻고 있었다. 예수님은 그것을 보시고
3 그 중 하나인 시몬의 배에 오르셨다. 그리고 그에게 배를 육지에서 조금 떼어 놓게 하시고 앉아서 군중을 가르치셨다.
4 예수님이 말씀을 마치신 후 시몬에게 “깊은 데로 가 그물을 쳐서 고기를 잡아라” 하시자
5 시몬은 “선생님, 우리가 밤새도록 애써 봤지만 한 마리도 잡지 못했습니다. 그러나 선생님이 말씀하시니 한 번 더 그물을 쳐 보겠습니다” 하고
6 그물을 쳤더니 고기가 너무 많이 잡혀 그물이 찢어지게 되었다.
7 그래서 그들은 다른 배에 있는 동료들에게 도와 달라고 손짓하였다. 그들이 와서 함께 두 배에 고기를 가득 채우자 배가 가라앉을 지경이었다.
8 시몬 베드로가 이것을 보고 예수님 앞에 꿇어 엎드려 “주님, 저는 죄인입니다. 제발 저를 떠나 주십시오” 하였다.
9 이것은 자기뿐만 아니라 자기와 함께 있던 모든 사람들이 고기 잡힌 것을 보고 놀라고
10 또 그의 동업자들인 세베대의 두 아들 야고보와 요한도 놀랐기 때문이었다. 이때 예수님이 시몬에게 “두려워하지 말아라. 이제부터 너는 사람을 낚을 것이다” 하자
11 그들은 배를 육지에 대고 모든 것을 버려 둔 채 예수님을 따라갔다.
병을 고치심
12 예수님이 어떤 마을에 계실 때였다. 온 몸에 문둥병이 번진 사람이 예수님을 보고 엎드려 “주님, 주님께서 원하시면 저를 깨끗이 고치실 수 있습니다” 하였다.
13 예수님이 그에게 손을 대시며 “내가 원한다. 깨끗이 나아라” 하고 말씀하시자 즉시 그의 문둥병이 나았다.
14 그때 예수님은 그에게 “너는 아무에게도 말하지 말고 제사장에게 가서 네 몸을 보이고 모세가 명령한 예물을 드려 네가 깨끗해진 것을 사람들에게 증거하여라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
15 그러나 예수님의 소문은 더욱 널리 퍼져서 많은 사람들이 예수님의 말씀도 듣고 병도 고치려고 모여 들었다.
16 그러나 예수님은 자주 조용한 곳으로 가셔서 기도하셨다.
17 어느 날 예수님이 가르치고 계실 때 갈릴리와 유대의 여러 마을과 예루살렘에서 온 바리새파 사람들과 율법학자들도 거기에 앉아 있었다. 그리고 [an]예수님은 하나님의 능력으로 병을 고치기도 하셨다.
18 그때 사람들이 한 중풍병자를 침대에 누인 채 메고 와서 예수님 앞에 데려가려고 하였으나
19 사람들이 너무 많아 안으로 들어갈 수가 없었다. 그래서 그들은 지붕을 뜯고 구멍을 뚫어 병자를 침대째로 예수님 앞에 달아내렸다.
20 예수님은 그들의 믿음을 보시고 “네 죄는 용서받았다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
21 그러자 율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들이 “도대체 이 사람이 누군데 감히 하나님을 모독하는가? 하나님 한 분 외에 누가 죄를 용서할 수 있단 말인가?” 하며 수군거렸다.
22 예수님은 그들의 생각을 아시고 “왜 그런 생각을 하느냐?
23 ‘네 죄는 용서받았다’ 하는 말과 ‘일어나 걸어가라’ 하는 말 중에 어느 것이 더 쉽겠느냐?
24 땅에서 죄를 용서하는 특권이 내게 있다는 것을 보여 주겠다” 하시고 중풍병자에게 “내가 너에게 말한다. 일어나 네 침구를 걷어 가지고 집으로 돌아가거라” 하고 말씀하셨다.
25 그러자 그는 즉시 사람들 앞에서 일어나 침구를 걷어 들고 하나님을 찬양하며 집으로 돌아갔다.
26 사람들은 모두 놀라 하나님을 찬양하면서도 두렵다는 듯이 “오늘 우리가 본 것은 정말 굉장한 일이다!” 하고 감탄하였다.
예수님이 레위를 부르심
27 그 후에 예수님이 나가시다가 세관에 레위라는 세무원이 앉아 있는 것을 보시고 “나를 따라오너라” 하시자
28 그는 모든 것을 버려 두고 예수님을 따랐다.
29 레위가 예수님을 위하여 자기 집에서 큰 잔치를 베풀자 많은 세무원들과 그 밖의 사람들도 예수님의 일행과 함께 식탁에 앉았다.
30 이것을 본 바리새파 사람들과 그들의 [ao]율법학자들이 예수님의 제자들에게 “어째서 당신들은 세무원들이나 죄인들과 함께 식사하시오?” 하고 따졌다.
31 예수님은 [ap]그 말을 들으시고 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “건강한 사람에게는 의사가 필요 없고 병든 사람에게만 의사가 필요하다.
32 나는 의로운 사람을 부르러 온 것이 아니라 죄인을 불러 회개시키려고 왔다.”
33 그들이 예수님께 “요한의 제자들과 바리새파 사람들의 제자들은 자주 금식하며 기도하는데 당신의 제자들은 먹고 마시기만 하니 어찌된 일입니까?” 하고 물었다.
34 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 “신랑이 함께 있는데 어떻게 손님들을 금식하게 할 수 있느냐?
35 그러나 신랑을 빼앗길 날이 올 것이다. 그 때에는 그들이 금식할 것이다” 하고 대답하셨다.
36 그러고서 예수님은 그들에게 비유를 들어 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “새 옷에서 천 조각을 찢어 낡은 옷에 대고 깁는 사람은 없다. 그렇게 하면 새 옷도 못 쓰게 되고 찢어 낸 천 조각도 낡은 옷에 어울리지 않을 것이다.
37 또 새 포도주를 낡은 가죽부대에 넣는 사람도 없다. 그렇게 하면 새 포도주가 부대를 터뜨려 포도주는 쏟아지고 부대도 못 쓰게 된다.
38 그러므로 새 포도주는 새 부대에 넣어야 한다.
39 묵은 포도주를 마셔 본 사람은 새 포도주를 마시려 하지 않는다. 그들은 묵은 것이 더 좋다고 여기기 때문이다.”
6 안식일에 예수님이 밀밭 사이로 지나가실 때 제자들이 밀 이삭을 잘라서 비벼 먹었다.
안식일의 주인
2 그러자 몇몇 바리새파 사람들이 “어째서 당신들은 안식일에 해서는 안 될 짓을 하시오?” 하고 따져 물었다.
3 그래서 예수님은 그들에게 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희는 다윗이 자기 일행과 함께 배가 고팠을 때 한 일을 읽어 보지 못했느냐?
4 다윗이 하나님의 집에 들어가 제사장 외에는 아무도 먹을 수 없는 차림빵을 먹고 자기 일행에게도 주지 않았느냐?”
5 그러고서 예수님은 “[aq]나는 바로 안식일의 주인이다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
6 또 다른 안식일에 예수님이 회당에 들어가 가르치고 계실 때 거기에 오른손이 오그라든 사람이 있었다.
7 율법학자들과 바리새파 사람들은 예수님을 고발할 구실을 찾으려고 안식일에 병자를 고쳐 주는가를 지켜 보고 있었다.
8 예수님이 그들의 생각을 아시고 그 불구자에게 “일어나 앞으로 나오너라” 하시자 그가 앞으로 나왔다.
9 그때 예수님은 그들을 향하여 “하나 물어 보자. 안식일에 선한 일을 하는 것과 악한 일을 하는 것, 사람을 살리는 것과 죽이는 것 중에 어느 것이 옳으냐?” 하고 물으셨다.
10 그러고서 예수님은 그들을 둘러보시고 손이 오그라든 그 사람에게 “네 손을 펴라” 하고 말씀하셨다. 그래서 그가 손을 펴자 오그라든 그의 손이 완전히 회복되었다.
11 그러나 그들은 화가 잔뜩 나서 예수님을 없애 버릴 방법을 의논하였다.
열두 제자를 뽑으심
12 이때 예수님은 기도하시려고 산으로 올라가서 밤새도록 하나님께 기도하셨다.
13 날이 밝자 예수님은 제자들을 가까이 불러 놓고 그 중에 열둘을 뽑아 [ar]사도라고 부르셨다.
14 이 열두 사도는 베드로라고도 한 시몬, 시몬의 형제 안드레, 야고보, 요한, 빌립, 바돌로매,
15 마태, 도마, 알패오의 아들 야고보, 열심 당원 시몬,
16 야고보의 아들 유다, 그리고 예수님을 판 가룟 사람 유다였다.
17 예수님은 제자들과 함께 산에서 내려와 평지에 서셨다. 거기에는 많은 제자들과 그리고 온 유대와 예루살렘과 바닷가 두로와 시돈에서 수많은 사람들이
18 예수님의 말씀도 듣고 병도 고치려고 와 있었다. 예수님은 그들 중에 더러운 귀신이 들려 괴로움을 당하는 사람들을 모두 고쳐 주셨다.
19 예수님께서 큰 능력으로 모든 사람을 고치시는 것을 보고 사람들은 저마다 그분을 만지려고 하였다.
20 예수님은 제자들을 보시며 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “가난한 너희는 행복하다. 하나님의 나라가 너희 것이다.
21 지금 굶주리는 너희는 행복하다. 너희가 배부르게 될 것이다. 지금 우는 너희는 행복하다. 너희가 웃게 될 것이다.
22 사람들이 [as]나 때문에 너희를 미워하고 따돌리고 모욕하며 너희 이름을 더럽힐 때 너희는 행복하다.
23 이런 일을 당하면 기뻐하고 즐거워하여라. 하늘에서 큰 상이 너희를 기다리고 있다. 그들의 조상들도 예언자들을 그와 같이 학대하였다.
24 그러나 너희 부요한 사람들에게는 불행이 닥칠 것이다. 너희는 이 세상에서 받을 수 있는 위로를 이미 다 받았다.
25 지금 배부르게 먹고 지내는 자들아, 불행하게도 너희는 굶주리게 될 것이다. 지금 웃는 자들아, 불행하게도 너희는 슬퍼하며 울 것이다.
26 모든 사람이 칭찬하는 자들에게 불행이 닥칠 것이다. 그들의 조상들도 거짓 예언자들을 그렇게 칭찬하였다.
27 “그러나 너희 듣는 자들에게 내가 말한다. 너희 원수를 사랑하고 너희를 미워하는 사람들에게 친절을 베풀어라.
28 너희를 저주하는 사람들을 축복해 주고 너희를 모욕하는 사람들을 위해 기도하라.
29 한쪽 뺨을 때리거든 다른 뺨도 돌려 대고 네 겉옷을 빼앗는 사람에게 속옷까지 주어라.
30 네게 달라는 사람에게 주고 네 것을 가져가는 사람에게 돌려 달라고 하지 말아라.
31 너희가 남에게 대접을 받고 싶은 그대로 남을 대접하여라.
32 너희를 사랑하는 사람들만 사랑한다면 너희가 무슨 칭찬을 받겠느냐? 죄인들도 자기를 사랑하는 사람은 사랑한다.
33 너희에게 친절을 베푸는 사람들에게만 친절을 베푼다면 너희가 무슨 칭찬을 받겠느냐? 죄인들도 그 정도는 할 줄 안다.
34 너희가 다시 받을 생각으로 사람들에게 빌려 준다면 무슨 칭찬을 받겠느냐? 죄인들도 되돌려 받을 줄 알면 빌려 준다.
35 그러나 너희는 원수를 사랑하고 그들에게 친절을 베풀며 아무것도 바라지 말고 빌려 주어라. 그러면 너희가 큰 상을 받을 것이며 하나님의 아들이 될 것이다. 그분은 은혜를 모르는 사람과 악한 사람들에게도 인자하시다.
36 너희 아버지께서 자비로우신 것처럼 너희도 자비로운 사람이 되어라.
37 “남을 판단하지 말아라. 그러면 너희도 판단을 받지 않을 것이다. 남을 죄인으로 단정하지 말아라. 그러면 너희도 죄인 취급을 받지 않을 것이다. 남을 용서하여라. 그러면 너희도 용서를 받을 것이다.
38 주어라. 그러면 너희도 받을 것이니 너희에게 누르고 흔들어 넘치게 부어 주실 것이다. 너희가 남에게 되어 주는 것만큼 되돌려 받을 것이다.”
39 또 예수님은 그들에게 비유를 들어 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “소경이 어떻게 소경을 인도할 수 있겠느냐? 그렇게 하다가는 둘 다 구덩이에 빠지고 말 것이다.
40 학생이 선생보다 낫다고 할 수는 없으나 완전히 다 배우고 나면 그 때에는 선생과 같이 될 것이다.
41 왜 너는 형제의 눈 속에 있는 티는 보면서 네 눈 속에 있는 들보는 보지 못하느냐?
42 네 눈 속에 있는 들보는 보지 못하면서 어떻게 형제에게 ‘네 눈 속에 있는 티를 빼내 주겠다’ 하고 말할 수 있느냐? 위선자야, 먼저 네 눈 속의 들보를 빼내어라. 그러면 네가 밝히 보고 형제의 눈 속에 있는 티도 빼낼 수 있을 것이다.
43 좋은 나무가 나쁜 열매를 맺을 수 없고 나쁜 나무가 좋은 열매를 맺을 수 없다.
44 나무는 그 열매를 보면 안다. 가시나무에서 무화과를 딸 수 없고 찔레에서 포도를 딸 수 없다.
45 선한 사람은 마음속에 쌓인 선으로 선한 말을 하고 악한 사람은 마음속에 쌓인 악으로 악한 말을 한다. 사람은 마음에 가득 찬 것을 입으로 말하기 마련이다.
46 “너희가 나를 보고 [at]입으로는 ‘주님, 주님’ 하면서도 어째서 내가 말하는 것은 실천하지 않느냐?
47 나에게 와서 내 말을 듣고 실천하는 사람은 바로 이런 사람과 같다.
48 그는 땅을 깊이 파서 반석 위에 기초를 놓고 집을 짓는 사람과 같다. 홍수가 나서 흙탕물이 그 집에 세차게 부딪쳐도 튼튼하게 잘 지었기 때문에 무너지지 않는다.
49 그러나 내 말을 듣고도 실천하지 않는 사람은 기초 없이 맨 땅에 집을 짓는 사람과 같다. 홍수가 밀어닥치면 그런 집은 곧 무너져 크게 파괴되고 만다.”
두 가지 놀라운 기적
7 예수님은 이 모든 말씀을 마치신 후에 가버나움으로 가셨다.
2 그때 어떤 [au]장교의 신임받는 종이 병들어 거의 죽게 되었다.
3 장교는 예수님의 소문을 듣고 유대인 장로 몇 사람을 예수님께 보내, 오셔서 그의 종을 좀 고쳐 달라고 간청하였다.
4 그들이 예수님께 와서 “이 사람은 주님의 도움을 받을 만도 합니다.
5 그는 우리 민족을 사랑하고 회당까지 지어 주었습니다” 하고 간청하였다.
6 그래서 예수님은 그들과 함께 가셨다. 그의 집 가까이 이르렀을 때에 장교는 친구들을 예수님께 보내 이렇게 전하게 하였다. “주님, 수고하지 마십시오. 저는 주님을 제 집에까지 오시게 할 만한 자격이 없습니다.
7 그래서 감히 나가 뵈올 생각조차 못했습니다. 그저 나으라는 말씀만 한마디 해 주십시오. 그러면 제 하인이 나을 것입니다.
8 저도 윗사람을 모시고 있고 제 아래에도 부하들이 있어서 제가 부하에게 ‘가라’ 하면 가고 ‘오라’ 하면 오고 제 하인에게 ‘이 일을 하라’ 하면 합니다.”
9 예수님은 이 말을 듣고 그를 갸륵하게 여기시며 따라온 사람들을 향해 말씀하셨다. “내가 분명히 말하지만 이스라엘 사람 중에서도 이만한 믿음은 보지 못하였다.”
10 장교가 보낸 그 사람들이 집에 돌아가 보니 종은 이미 나아 있었다.
11 [av]그 후에 예수님이 나인이란 성으로 가시자 제자들과 많은 사람들도 따라갔다.
12 예수님이 성문 가까이 가셨을 때 사람들이 상여를 메고 나오고 있었다. 죽은 사람은 어떤 과부의 외아들이었다. 그리고 그 성에서 나온 많은 사람들이 그 여자와 함께 상여를 따라오고 있었다.
13 주님은 그 여자를 보시고 불쌍히 여겨 “울지 말아라” 하고 위로하셨다.

15 그러자 죽은 사람이 일어나 앉아 말하기 시작하였다. 그래서 예수님은 그를 어머니에게 돌려 주셨다.
16 사람들은 모두 두려움에 사로잡혀 하나님을 찬양하며 “우리 가운데 위대한 예언자가 나타나셨다” 하기도 하고 “하나님께서 자기 백성을 돌보아 주셨다” 하고 말하기도 하였다.
17 예수님에 대한 이 소문이 온 유대와 그 부근에 널리 퍼졌다.
예수님과 세례 요한
18 요한의 제자들이 예수님에 대한 모든 일을 요한에게 말하자
19 요한은 제자 두 사람을 예수님께 보내 “오실 분이 선생님입니까, 아니면 우리가 다른 분을 기다려야 합니까?” 하고 물어 보게 하였다.
20 그들이 예수님께 와서 “[aw]세례 요한이 우리를 보내 ‘오실 분이 선생님입니까, 아니면 우리가 다른 분을 기다려야 합니까?’ 하고 물어 보라고 했습니다” 하였다.
21 그때 예수님은 여러 병자들과 악한 귀신에게 시달리는 사람들을 낫게 하시고 많은 소경들의 눈을 뜨게 하시다가
22 요한의 제자들을 보고 이렇게 대답하셨다. “너희는 가서 듣고 본 것을 요한에게 알려라. 소경이 눈을 뜨고 앉은뱅이가 걷고 문둥병자가 깨끗해지며 귀머거리가 듣고 죽은 사람이 살아나고 가난한 사람에게 기쁜 소식이 전파된다고 하여라.
23 그리고 [ax]나를 의심하지 않는 사람이 행복하다고 일러 주어라.”
24 요한의 제자들이 떠난 후 예수님은 사람들에게 요한에 대하여 이렇게 말씀하셨다. “너희가 무엇을 보려고 광야에 나갔느냐? 바람에 흔들리는 갈대냐,
25 아니면 화려한 옷을 입은 사람이냐? 화려한 옷을 입고 사치스럽게 지내는 사람은 왕궁에 있다.
26 그런데 너희는 어째서 나갔느냐? 예언자를 보려고 나갔느냐? 사실 요한은 예언자보다 더 훌륭하다.
27 이 사람을 가리켜 성경에는 [ay]‘보라! 내가 너보다 앞서 내 사자를 보내겠다. 그가 네 앞에서 네 길을 준비할 것이다’ 라고 기록되어 있다.
28 내가 분명히 말하지만 여자에게서 태어난 사람 중에 요한보다 더 큰 사람은 없다. 그러나 하나님의 나라에서는 가장 작은 사람이라도 그보다는 크다.”
29 예수님의 말씀을 들은 사람들은 세무원들까지도 이미 요한의 [az]세례를 받았으므로 하나님의 요구가 옳다는 것을 인정하였으나
30 바리새파 사람들과 율법학자들은 요한의 세례를 받지 않았으므로 스스로 하나님의 뜻을 저버렸다.
31 주님은 다시 말씀하셨다. “이 시대 사람을 무엇에 비할 수 있을까? 이 사람들은 무엇과 같을까?
32 이들은 마치 장터에 앉아서 자기 친구들에게 ‘우리가 피리를 불어도 너희가 춤추지 않고 우리가 상여 노래를 불러도 너희가 울지 않았다’ 하고 말하는 아이들과 같다.
33 [ba]세례 요한이 와서 빵도 먹지 않고 포도주도 마시지 않자 너희가 ‘그는 귀신 들렸다’ 하더니
34 [bb]내가 와서 먹고 마시자 ‘이 사람은 먹고 마시기를 좋아하는 사람이며 세무원과 죄인들의 친구이다’ 하고 말한다.
35 그러나 [bc]하나님의 지혜는 그것을 받아들이는 사람에 의해서 옳다는 것이 입증된다.”
용서받은 여자
36 한 바리새파 사람이 함께 식사하자고 예수님을 초대하였다. 그래서 예수님이 그의 집에 들어가 식탁에 앉으셨을 때
37 그 마을에 사는 죄 많은 한 여자가 예수님이 바리새파 사람의 집에서 음식을 잡수신다는 것을 알고 향유 한 병을 가지고 와서
38 예수님의 뒷발치에서 울며 눈물로 예수님의 발을 적셨다. 그러고서 그 여자는 자기 머리카락으로 예수님의 발을 닦으며 거기에 입맞추고 향유를 부었다.
39 예수님을 초대한 바리새파 사람은 이것을 보고 ‘만일 이 사람이 예언자라면 자기를 만지는 이 여자가 누구라는 것쯤은 알 텐데. 이 여자는 죄인이 아닌가!’ 하며 속으로 중얼거렸다.
40 그래서 예수님이 그에게 말씀하셨다. “시몬아, 내가 너에게 할 말이 있다.” “선생님, 말씀하십시오.”
41 “돈놀이하는 어떤 사람에게 빚을 진 두 사람이 있었는데 하나는 [bd]500데나리온, 하나는 50데나리온의 빚을 졌다.
42 둘 다 빚을 갚을 돈이 없으므로 돈놀이하는 사람은 그들의 빚을 모두 면제해 주었다. 그 두 사람 중에 누가 더 그를 사랑하겠느냐?”
43 “제 생각에는 더 많이 면제받은 사람입니다.” 그래서 예수님은 “네 말이 맞다” 하시고
44 그 여자를 돌아보시며 시몬에게 다시 말씀하셨다. “이 여자가 보이느냐? 내가 네 집에 들어왔을 때 너는 나에게 발 씻을 물도 주지 않았으나 이 여자는 눈물로 내 발을 적시고 머리카락으로 닦아 주었다.
45 너는 나에게 입맞추지 않았으나 이 여자는 내가 들어올 때부터 계속 내 발에 입을 맞췄다.
46 너는 내 머리에 아무 기름도 발라 주지 않았으나 이 여자는 향유를 내 발에 부었다.
47 그러므로 내가 너에게 말하지만 이 여자의 많은 죄가 용서를 받았다. 그것은 이 여자가 나를 많이 사랑했기 때문이다. 그러나 적게 용서받은 사람은 적게 사랑한다.”
48 그러고 나서 예수님은 그 여자에게 “네 죄는 용서받았다” 하고 말씀하셨다.
49 예수님과 함께 식탁에 앉아 있던 사람들은 속으로 “이 사람이 도대체 누군데 남의 죄까지 용서해 주는가?” 하며 수군거렸다.

1 Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled[a] among us, 2 just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first(B) were eyewitnesses(C) and servants of the word.(D) 3 With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account(E) for you, most excellent(F) Theophilus,(G) 4 so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.(H)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)
11 Then an angel(P) of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.(Q) 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.(R) 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid,(S) Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.(T) 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth,(U) 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this?(AC) I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.”(AD)
19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel.(AE) I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak(AF) until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)

The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus(CS) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(CT) 2 (This was the first census that took place while[e] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(CU) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(CV) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(CW) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(CX) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(CY) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(CZ) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(DA) the Lord.(DB) 12 This will be a sign(DC) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(DD) to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(DE) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(DF) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(DG) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(DH) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(DI)
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(DJ) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[f]),(DK) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[g](DL)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(DM) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(DN) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(DO) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(DP)
you may now dismiss[h] your servant in peace.(DQ)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(DR)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(DS)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(DT) “This child is destined to cause the falling(DU) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(DV) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[i](DW) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(DX) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(DY)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(DZ) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(EA)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(EB) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(EC) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(ED) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(EE) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[j](EF) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(EG)
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(EH) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(EI) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(EJ)
John the Baptist Prepares the Way(EK)(EL)
3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(EM) was governor of Judea, Herod(EN) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(EO) the word of God came to John(EP) son of Zechariah(EQ) in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(ER) 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[k](ES)
7 John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(ET) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(EU) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(EV) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(EW)
10 “What should we do then?”(EX) the crowd asked.
11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(EY)
12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(EZ) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”
13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(FA) he told them.
14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”
He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(FB)—be content with your pay.”
15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(FC) might possibly be the Messiah.(FD) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[l] water.(FE) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[m] the Holy Spirit and fire.(FF) 17 His winnowing fork(FG) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(FH) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.
19 But when John rebuked Herod(FI) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(FJ)
The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus(FK)(FL)
21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying,(FM) heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him(FN) in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(FO) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(FP)
23 Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry.(FQ) He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,(FR)
the son of Heli, 24 the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, 26 the son of Maath,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein,
the son of Josek, the son of Joda,
27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa,
the son of Zerubbabel,(FS) the son of Shealtiel,
the son of Neri, 28 the son of Melki,
the son of Addi, the son of Cosam,

29 the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer,
the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,

the son of Judah, the son of Joseph,
the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
31 the son of Melea, the son of Menna,

the son of David, 32 the son of Jesse,
the son of Obed, the son of Boaz,
the son of Salmon,[n] the son of Nahshon,

the son of Judah, 34 the son of Jacob,
the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,
the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,(FV)
35 the son of Serug, the son of Reu,
the son of Peleg, the son of Eber,
the son of Shelah, 36 the son of Cainan,
the son of Arphaxad,(FW) the son of Shem,
the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,(FX)
37 the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch,
the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel,
the son of Kenan,(FY) 38 the son of Enosh,
the son of Seth, the son of Adam,
the son of God.(FZ)
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(GA)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(GB) left the Jordan(GC) and was led by the Spirit(GD) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(GE) he was tempted[p] by the devil.(GF) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(GG) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[q]”(GH)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(GI) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(GJ) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[r]”(GK)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[s]”(GL)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[t]”(GM)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(GN) he left him(GO) until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(GP) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(GQ) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(GR) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(GS) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(GT) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(GU) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(GV)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(GW) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[u](GX)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(GY) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(GZ) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(HA)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(HB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(HC)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(HD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(HE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(HF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[v] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(HG)
28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(HH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(HI)
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(HJ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(HK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(HL) because his words had authority.(HM)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(HN) Jesus of Nazareth?(HO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(HP)—the Holy One of God!”(HQ)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(HR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(HS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(HT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(HU)
Jesus Heals Many(HV)(HW)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(HX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(HY) he healed them.(HZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(IA) But he rebuked(IB) them and would not allow them to speak,(IC) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(ID) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(IE)
Jesus Calls His First Disciples(IF)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[w] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(IG) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(IH)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(II)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(IJ) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(IK) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(IL) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(IM) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(IN) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(IO)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(IP)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[x](IQ) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(IR) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(IS) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(IT) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(IU)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(IV)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(IW) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(IX) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(IY)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(IZ)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(JA) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(JB) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(JC)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(JD) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(JE)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(JF) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(JG) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(JH)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(JI)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(JJ)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(JK) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(JL) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(JM) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.
