アブシャロムの謀反
15 このあとアブシャロムは、りっぱな戦車とそれを引く馬を買い入れました。さらに、自分を先導する五十人の馬丁を雇いました。 2 彼は、毎朝早く起きて町の門へ出かけました。王のところへ訴えを持ち込む者を見つけると、そのつど呼び止めて、さも関心があるように訴えを聞くのです。 3 だれに対しても、こんなふうに気をそそるのでした。「この件では、君のほうが正しいようだな。しかし、気の毒だが、王の側には、こういう訴えに耳を貸してくれる者はいないだろう。 4 私が裁判官だったら、訴えのある人はみな、私のところへ来れるし、もちろん、公平な裁判もできるのだが。」
5 アブシャロムはまた、だれか頭を下げてあいさつする者がいると、決してそのままやり過ごさず、素早く手を差し伸べて握りしめました。 6 こうして、アブシャロムは巧みにイスラエル中の人たちの心をとらえていったのです。
7-8 それから四年後、アブシャロムは王に願い出ました。「主にいけにえをささげるため、ヘブロンへ行かせてください。ゲシュルにいた時、『もしエルサレムにお帰しくださるなら、いけにえをささげて感謝します』と誓願を立てていたのです。それを果たしたいのです。」
9 王は、「いいだろう。誓願を果たしに行くがいい」と許可しました。
アブシャロムはヘブロンへ発ちました。 10 ところが、ヘブロン滞在中にイスラエル各地に密使を送り、王への反逆をそそのかしたのです。密書には、こう書かれていました。「ラッパが吹き鳴らされたら、アブシャロムがヘブロンで王になったとご承知ください。」 11 アブシャロムはエルサレムを出る時、客として二百人を招待し、同伴して来ていました。もちろん、彼らはアブシャロムのもくろみなど全く知らなかったのです。 12 アブシャロムは、いけにえをささげている間に、ダビデの顧問の一人で、ギロに住むアヒトフェルを呼び寄せました。アヒトフェルは、増え広がる他の賛同者と同様に、アブシャロムを支持すると表明しました。それで、この謀反は非常に大きなものになりました。
逃げるダビデ
13 エルサレムのダビデ王のもとには、すぐに急使が送られました。「全イスラエルがアブシャロムになびいて、謀反を企てています！」
14 ダビデは即座に命じました。「では、すぐに逃げるのだ。早くしないと手遅れになる。アブシャロムが来る前に町から抜け出せば、われわれもエルサレムの町も助かるだろう。」
15 家臣たちは、「あなたにお従いします。お考えどおりになさってください」と答えました。
16 王とその家族は、すぐに宮殿から出ました。宮殿には、留守番として十人の若いそばめを残しただけでした。 17-18 ダビデは町はずれでひと息つき、その間に、あとに従ってガテからついて来た六百人のガテ人と、ケレテ人、ペレテ人の外国人部隊を、先導役として王の前を進ませるようにしました。 19-20 ところが、だしぬけに、王はガテ人六百人の隊長イタイにこう言ったのです。「どうして、われわれと行動を共にするのだ。部下を連れてエルサレムのあの王のもとにいるほうがよいぞ。君らは亡命中の外国人で、イスラエルには寄留しているだけなのだから。しかも、昨日来たばかりだというではないか。なのに、今日、行く先の定まらぬ放浪の旅に誘い出すには忍びない。部下を連れて戻るがよい。神様の恵みがあるよう祈っている。」
21 「主に誓って申し上げます。また、あなたのおいのちにかけても誓います。あなたが行かれる所どこであろうと、どんなことが起ころうと、命がけでついて行きます。」
22 「わかった。そうまで言うなら、ついて来てくれ」
こうしてイタイは、六百人とその家族を引き連れて進みました。
23 王と従者たちがキデロン川を渡り、荒野へ進んで行くのを見て、町中が深い悲しみに包まれました。 24 レビ人とともに神の契約の箱をかついでいたエブヤタルとツァドクは、全員が通り過ぎるまで、箱を道ばたに下ろしました。 25-26 それから、ダビデの指示に従って、ツァドクは契約の箱を都に戻しました。その時、ダビデはこう言いました。「もし主がよしとされるなら、私をもう一度連れ戻し、神の箱と幕屋を見させてくださるだろう。また、たとえ主から見放されるのであっても、どうか主が最善と思われることをしてくださいますように。」
27 さらに、ツァドクに言いました。「よいか、私に考えがある。あなたの息子アヒマアツとエブヤタルの息子ヨナタンを伴って、急いで都に引き返しなさい。 28 私はヨルダン川の浅瀬で、知らせを待っている。荒野に身を隠す前に、エルサレムの様子を知りたいのだ。」
29 ツァドクとエブヤタルは、神の箱をエルサレムに持ち帰り、そこにとどまりました。
ダビデの友フシャイ
30 ダビデはオリーブ山への道を登りました。頭を覆い、はだしで、泣きながら悲しみを表したのです。ダビデに従う人々も、頭を覆い、泣き声を上げて山を登りました。 31 自分の顧問であったアヒトフェルが、事もあろうにアブシャロムに加担している、という情報を得た時、ダビデは、「主よ。どうか、アヒトフェルがアブシャロムに愚かな助言をするよう導いてください」と祈りました。
32 人々が神を礼拝する場所であるオリーブ山の頂上まで登りきった時、ダビデはアルキ人フシャイに出会いました。彼は服を裂き、頭に土をかぶって、ダビデの到着を心待ちにしていたのです。 33-34 しかし、ダビデはフシャイに言いました。「あなたがいっしょに来てくれても、重荷になるだけなのだ。エルサレムに帰ってアブシャロムに、『私は、これまでお父上の相談役として仕えてまいりました。これからは、あなたにお仕えします』と言ってくれ。そうすれば、アヒトフェルの助言に反対して、それをぶち壊すことができる。 35-36 祭司のツァドクとエブヤタルもエルサレムにいる。私を捕らえようとする計画があったなら、彼らに知らせてくれ。そうすれば、二人の息子たちアヒマアツとヨナタンが、私のもとに、成り行きを知らせてくれることになっている。」
37 それで、ダビデの友フシャイはエルサレムに帰りました。ちょうど同じころ、アブシャロムもエルサレムに着きました。

Absalom’s Conspiracy
15 In the course of time,(A) Absalom provided himself with a chariot(B) and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate.(C) Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.” 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”(D) 4 And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land!(E) Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that they receive justice.”
5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts(F) of the people of Israel.
7 At the end of four[a] years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the Lord. 8 While your servant was living at Geshur(G) in Aram, I made this vow:(H) ‘If the Lord takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the Lord in Hebron.[b]’”
9 The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron.
10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets,(I) then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’” 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter. 12 While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel(J) the Gilonite, David’s counselor,(K) to come from Giloh,(L) his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.(M)
David Flees
13 A messenger came and told David, “The hearts of the people of Israel are with Absalom.”
14 Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee,(N) or none of us will escape from Absalom.(O) We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin on us and put the city to the sword.”
15 The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.”
16 The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines(P) to take care of the palace. 17 So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at the edge of the city. 18 All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites(Q) and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king.
19 The king said to Ittai(R) the Gittite, “Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner,(S) an exile from your homeland. 20 You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander(T) about with us, when I do not know where I am going? Go back, and take your people with you. May the Lord show you kindness and faithfulness.”[c](U)
21 But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.”(V)
22 David said to Ittai, “Go ahead, march on.” So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him.
23 The whole countryside wept aloud(W) as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley,(X) and all the people moved on toward the wilderness.
24 Zadok(Y) was there, too, and all the Levites who were with him were carrying the ark(Z) of the covenant of God. They set down the ark of God, and Abiathar(AA) offered sacrifices until all the people had finished leaving the city.
25 Then the king said to Zadok, “Take the ark of God back into the city. If I find favor in the Lord’s eyes, he will bring me back and let me see it and his dwelling place(AB) again. 26 But if he says, ‘I am not pleased with you,’ then I am ready; let him do to me whatever seems good to him.(AC)”
27 The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Do you understand?(AD) Go back to the city with my blessing. Take your son Ahimaaz with you, and also Abiathar’s son Jonathan.(AE) You and Abiathar return with your two sons. 28 I will wait at the fords(AF) in the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.” 29 So Zadok and Abiathar took the ark of God back to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30 But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping(AG) as he went; his head(AH) was covered and he was barefoot. All the people with him covered their heads too and were weeping as they went up. 31 Now David had been told, “Ahithophel(AI) is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Lord, turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.”
32 When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai(AJ) the Arkite(AK) was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust(AL) on his head. 33 David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be a burden(AM) to me. 34 But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, ‘Your Majesty, I will be your servant; I was your father’s servant in the past, but now I will be your servant,’(AN) then you can help me by frustrating(AO) Ahithophel’s advice. 35 Won’t the priests Zadok and Abiathar be there with you? Tell them anything you hear in the king’s palace.(AP) 36 Their two sons, Ahimaaz(AQ) son of Zadok and Jonathan(AR) son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with anything you hear.”
37 So Hushai,(AS) David’s confidant, arrived at Jerusalem as Absalom(AT) was entering the city.

ダビデとツィバ
16 ダビデが山の頂上から少し下ったころ、メフィボシェテ家の執事ともいうべきツィバが、ようやく追いつきました。二頭のろばに、パン二百個、干しぶどう百房、ぶどう百房、それにぶどう酒一たるを積んでいます。
2 王は、「いったい何のためだ」と尋ねました。
「ろばはご家族がお乗りになるため、パンと夏のくだものは若いご家来衆に、ぶどう酒は荒野で弱った方々に召し上がっていただくためです。」
3 「メフィボシェテはどこにいる。」
「エルサレムに残っております。あの方は、『今こそ、王になれる。今日こそ、祖父サウルの王国を取り戻す』と申しておりました。」
4 「それがかなったら、メフィボシェテのものを全部、おまえに与えよう。」
「ありがとうございます、王様。心からお礼申し上げます。」
ダビデをのろうシムイ
5 ダビデの一行がバフリムの村を通り過ぎると、一人の男がのろいのことばを浴びせながら出て来ました。男はゲラの息子シムイで、サウル一族の者でした。 6 彼は王と側近、さらに護衛の勇士のだれかれかまわず、石を投げつけました。
7-8 「出て行けっ！ この人殺し！ 悪党め！」この時とばかり、ダビデをののしります。「よくもサウル王とその家族を殺してくれたな。ざまあ見ろ。罰があたったのだ。王位を盗んだおまえが、今は息子のアブシャロムに王位を奪われた。これが神のおぼしめしというものだ。今度は、おまえが同じ手口で殺されるのだ。」
9 あまりのひどさに、アビシャイが申し出ました。「あの死に犬に、あなたをのろわせておいてよいものでしょうか。あいつの首をはねさせてください。」
10 「ならぬ！ 主が彼にのろわせておられるのだ。どうして止められるだろう。 11 実の息子が私を殺そうとしているのだぞ。このベニヤミン人は、のろっているだけではないか。放っておきなさい。主がそうさせておられるのだから。 12 おそらく主は、私が不当な扱いを受けていることをご存じで、それに甘んじる私に、あののろいに代えて祝福を下さるだろう。」
13 一行がなおも進んで行くと、シムイも丘の中腹をダビデと並行して歩き、のろったり、石を投げたり、ちりをばらまいたりしました。 14 王も従者も全員、くたくたに疲れていました。それで一行はしばらく休息することにしました。
アヒトフェルとフシャイの進言
15 その間に、アブシャロムと彼の兵は、エルサレム入城を果たしました。アヒトフェルもいっしょでした。 16 ダビデの友、アルキ人フシャイはエルサレムに戻り、直ちにアブシャロムに謁見を求めて来ると、「王様、ばんざい！ 王様、ばんざい！」と叫びました。 17 アブシャロムは尋ねました。「これが、父ダビデに対する態度か。どうして父といっしょに行かなかったのだ。」
18 「私はただ、主とイスラエルの民によって選ばれたお方に仕えたいのです。 19 かつてはお父上でしたが、これからは、あなたにお仕えします。」
20 話が決まると、アブシャロムはアヒトフェルに、「さて、これからどうしたものか」と意見を求めました。 21 アヒトフェルは進言しました。「お父上が宮殿の留守番にと残しておかれた、そばめたちがいます。まず、その女たちを訪ねて、いっしょに寝られるのがよろしい。それくらい父君を侮辱すれば、全国民はもう、あなたと父君の仲は致命的で、和解の余地はないと察するでしょう。そうすれば、いっそう民はあなたのもとに一致団結します。」
22 そこで、宮殿の屋上に、だれの目にもそれとわかる天幕（テント）が張られました。アブシャロムはそこへ入って、父のそばめたちと寝たのです。 23 アブシャロムは、かつてダビデがそうしたように、アヒトフェルのことばには何でも従いました。アヒトフェルが語ることはすべて、神の口から直接授けられた知恵のように思われたからです。

David and Ziba
16 When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba,(A) the steward of Mephibosheth, waiting to meet him. He had a string of donkeys saddled and loaded with two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred cakes of raisins, a hundred cakes of figs and a skin of wine.(B)
2 The king asked Ziba, “Why have you brought these?”
Ziba answered, “The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on, the bread and fruit are for the men to eat, and the wine is to refresh(C) those who become exhausted in the wilderness.”
3 The king then asked, “Where is your master’s grandson?”(D)
Ziba(E) said to him, “He is staying in Jerusalem, because he thinks, ‘Today the Israelites will restore to me my grandfather’s kingdom.’”
4 Then the king said to Ziba, “All that belonged to Mephibosheth(F) is now yours.”
“I humbly bow,” Ziba said. “May I find favor in your eyes, my lord the king.”
Shimei Curses David
5 As King David approached Bahurim,(G) a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei(H) son of Gera, and he cursed(I) as he came out. 6 He pelted David and all the king’s officials with stones, though all the troops and the special guard were on David’s right and left. 7 As he cursed, Shimei said, “Get out, get out, you murderer, you scoundrel! 8 The Lord has repaid you for all the blood you shed in the household of Saul, in whose place you have reigned.(J) The Lord has given the kingdom into the hands of your son Absalom. You have come to ruin because you are a murderer!”(K)
9 Then Abishai(L) son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should this dead dog(M) curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head.”(N)
10 But the king said, “What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah?(O) If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why do you do this?’”(P)
11 David then said to Abishai and all his officials, “My son,(Q) my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.(R) 12 It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery(S) and restore to me his covenant blessing(T) instead of his curse today.(U)”
13 So David and his men continued along the road while Shimei was going along the hillside opposite him, cursing as he went and throwing stones at him and showering him with dirt. 14 The king and all the people with him arrived at their destination exhausted.(V) And there he refreshed himself.
The Advice of Ahithophel and Hushai
15 Meanwhile, Absalom(W) and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel(X) was with him. 16 Then Hushai(Y) the Arkite, David’s confidant, went to Absalom and said to him, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”
17 Absalom said to Hushai, “So this is the love you show your friend? If he’s your friend, why didn’t you go with him?”(Z)
18 Hushai said to Absalom, “No, the one chosen by the Lord, by these people, and by all the men of Israel—his I will be, and I will remain with him. 19 Furthermore, whom should I serve? Should I not serve the son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you.”(AA)
20 Absalom said to Ahithophel, “Give us your advice. What should we do?”
21 Ahithophel answered, “Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.” 22 So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.(AB)
23 Now in those days the advice(AC) Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David(AD) and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.

罪がすっかり消された喜びは、

罪を告白し、その記録を消し去ってもらった人は、
どれほど解放感を味わうことでしょう。
3 私には、罪を認めたくない時がありました。
しかし、私はかえってみじめになり、
くる日もくる日も挫折感にとらわれて過ごしました。
4 神の御手が、いつも重くのしかかっていました。
私の力は、強烈な日ざしの照りつける
水たまりのように干上がりました。
5 とうとう私は、自分の罪を
神の前にさらけ出さざるをえませんでした。
「何もかも主にお話ししよう」と決心したのです。
すると、あなたは赦してくださいました。
私の罪は跡形もなく消えたのです。
6 私は神を信じる人々に、
自分の罪に気づいたら、まだ赦される間に
神に告白しなさいと、大声で忠告します。
そうすれば、その人はさばきを免れるのです。
7 この人生に、どんな嵐が吹き寄せようと、
私は神のもとに避難します。
そこでは勝利の歌が響き、
苦しみに巻き込まれることがないからです。
8 主はこう言われます。
わたしはあなたを教え、最善の人生へと導こう。
助言を与えて、一歩一歩を見守ろう。
9 くつわをはめなければ言うことを聞かない、
馬やらばのようになってはいけない。
10 悪者どもは次々と悲しみに見舞われますが、
主に信頼する人は無限の愛に包まれます。

whose transgressions are forgiven,

through my groaning(F) all day long.
4 For day and night
your hand was heavy(G) on me;
my strength was sapped(H)

5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you
and did not cover up my iniquity.(I)
I said, “I will confess(J)
my transgressions(K) to the Lord.”
And you forgave
the guilt of my sin.(L)
6 Therefore let all the faithful pray to you

surely the rising(N) of the mighty waters(O)

再び神の国のたとえ話
25 神の国は、ランプを持って花婿を迎えに出た、十人の娘（花嫁の付き添い）のようです。 2-4 そのうちの五人は賢く、ランプの油を十分用意していましたが、残りの五人は愚かで、うっかり忘れていました。
5 花婿の到着が遅れたので、みな横になり寝入ってしまいました。 6 真夜中ごろ、ようやく、『花婿のお着きー。迎えに出なさーい』と叫ぶ声がします。
7-8 娘たちは飛び起きると、めいめい自分のランプを整えました。その時、油を用意していなかった五人の娘は、ランプが今にも消えそうなので、ほかの五人に油を分けてほしいと頼みました。
9 『ごめんなさい。分けてあげるほどはありません。それよりもお店に行って、買ってきたほうがいいのではないかしら。』
10 こう言われて、あわてて買いに行っているうちに、花婿が到着しました。用意のできていた娘たちは、花婿といっしょに披露宴に行き、戸は閉じられました。
11 そのあとで、例の五人が帰って来て、『ご主人様、戸を開けてください！』と叫びました。
12 ところが主人は、『私はあなたがたを知りません』と答えました。
13 こんなことにならないために、目を覚まして、いつでもわたしを迎える準備をしていなさい。わたしが来るその日、その時が、いつかわからないのですから。
14 天の御国はまた、他国へ出かけたある人のようです。彼は出発前に、使用人たちを呼び、『さあ、元手をやるから、これで留守中に商売をしなさい』と、それぞれにお金を預けました。
15 めいめいの能力に応じて、一人には五タラント（一タラントは六千日分の賃金）、ほかの一人には二タラント、もう一人には一タラントというふうに。こうして、彼は旅に出ました。 16 五タラント受け取った男は、それを元手にさっそく商売を始め、じきに五タラントもうけました。 17 二タラント受け取った男もすぐ仕事を始め、二タラントもうけました。
18 ところが、一タラント受け取った男は、地面に穴を掘ると、その中にお金を隠してしまいました。
19 だいぶ時がたち、主人が帰って来ました。すぐに使用人たちが呼ばれ、清算が始まりました。 20 五タラント預かった男は十タラントを差し出しました。『ご主人様。ごらんください。あの五タラントを倍にしました。』 21 主人は彼の働きをほめました。『よくやった。おまえはわずかなお金を忠実に使ったから、今度はもっとたくさんの仕事を任せよう。私といっしょに喜んでくれ。』
22 次に、二タラント受け取った男が来て、『ご主人様。ごらんください。あの二タラントを倍にしました』と言いました。
23 『よくやった。おまえはわずかなお金を忠実に使ったから、今度はもっとたくさんの仕事を任せよう。私といっしょに喜んでくれ。』主人はこの男もほめてやりました。
24-25 最後に、一タラント受け取った男が進み出て言いました。『ご主人様。あなたはたいそうひどい方でございます。私は前々からそれを知っておりましたから、せっかくお金をもうけても、あなたが取り上げてしまうのではないかと、こわくてしかたがなかったのです。それで、あなたのお金を土の中に隠しておきました。はい、これがそのお金でございます。』
26 これを聞いて、主人は答えて言いました。『なんという悪いやつだ！ なまけ者めが！ 私がおまえのもうけを取り上げるのがわかっていたというのか。 27 だったらせめて、そのお金を銀行にでも預金しておけばよかったのだ。そうすれば、利息がついたではないか。 28 さあ、この男のお金を取り上げて、五タラント持っている者にやりなさい。 29 与えられたものを上手に使う者はもっと多くのものが与えられ、ますます豊かになる。だが不忠実な者は、与えられたわずかなものさえ取り上げられてしまうのだ。 30 役立たずは、外の暗闇へ追い出してしまいなさい。そこで、泣きわめくなり、くやしがったりするがいい。』
31 メシヤのわたしが、その栄光の輝きのうちに、すべての天使と共にやって来る時、わたしは栄光の王座につきます。 32 そして、すべての国民がわたしの前に集められます。その時わたしは、羊飼いが羊とやぎとを選別するように、人々を二組に分け、 33 羊はわたしの右側に、やぎを左側に置きます。

The Parable of the Ten Virgins
25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(A) ten virgins who took their lamps(B) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(C) 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(D) 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(E)
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’
7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’(F)
9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’
10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.(G) And the door was shut.
11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’
12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’(H)
13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.(I)
The Parable of the Bags of Gold(J)
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,(K) who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability.(L) Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.(M) 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(N) Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’
23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(O) Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(P) 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(Q)
The Sheep and the Goats
31 “When the Son of Man comes(R) in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.(S) 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate(T) the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.(U) 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom(V) prepared for you since the creation of the world.(W) 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,(X) 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me,(Y) I was sick and you looked after me,(Z) I was in prison and you came to visit me.’(AA)
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’(AB)
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me,(AC) you who are cursed, into the eternal fire(AD) prepared for the devil and his angels.(AE) 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’(AF)
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.(AG)”(AH)
