²⁸ When Jesus had finished this sermon,^[a](A) the crowds were astonished at His teaching,^{(B) 29} because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.

Ministry in Galilee

¹⁴ After^(A) John was arrested,^(B) Jesus went to Galilee,^(C) preaching^(D) the good news^[a][b](E) of God:^{[c](F) 15} “The time^(G) is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God^(H) has come^(I) near.^(J) Repent^(K) and believe^(L) in the good news!”

Rejection at Nazareth

¹⁶ He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up.^(A) As usual, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day^(B) and stood up to read.^{(C) 17} The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him, and unrolling the scroll, He found the place where it was written:

²⁰ He then rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down.^(E) And the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on Him. ²¹ He began by saying to them, “Today as you listen, this Scripture has been fulfilled.”

The Parable of the Sower

⁴ As a large crowd was gathering, and people were flocking to Him from every town, He said in a parable:^{(A) 5} “A sower went out to sow his seed. As he was sowing, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the sky ate it up. ⁶ Other seed fell on the rock; when it sprang up, it withered, since it lacked moisture. ⁷ Other seed fell among thorns; the thorns sprang up with it and choked it. ⁸ Still other seed fell on good ground; when it sprang up, it produced a crop: 100 times what was sown.”^(B) As He said this, He called out, “Anyone who has ears to hear should listen!”^(C)
