So how does the Bible, overall, describe anger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pentateuch: <\/strong>Anger is described as \u201cfierce\u201d and \u201ccruel\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis%2049%3A7&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 49:7<\/a> (NIV). It\u2019s \u201cburning\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2011%3A8&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exodus 11:8<\/a>. In the same book, it\u2019s also described as a \u201cblazing fury,\u201d and if you\u2019re not careful, it can \u201cblaze against you\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus%2015%3A7%3B22%3A24&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exodus 15:7; 22:24<\/a> NLT). In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Leviticus%2026%3A28&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leviticus 26:8<\/a>, anger is something given \u201cfull vent\u201d and equated with \u201chostility\u201d (NLT). In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Deuteronomy%207%3A4&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deuteronomy 7:4<\/a>, it is associated with the words \u201cburn\u201d and \u201cdestroy\u201d (NIV).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Histories: <\/strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Samuel%2020%3A30&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 Samuel 20:30<\/a>, we see an anger that \u201cboil[s] with rage\u201d (NLT). Anger \u201cwill not be quenched,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Kings%2022%3A17&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Kings 22:17<\/a> (NIV). In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Samuel%206%3A8&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Samuel 6:8<\/a>, it \u201cburst[s] out\u201d (NLT); in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Job%204%3A9&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job 4:9<\/a>, it \u201cblast[s]\u201d (NIV); and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Job%2016%3A9&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Job 16:9<\/a>, God Himself, in anger, \u201ctears\u201d and \u201cpierces\u201d (NLT).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Psalms: <\/strong>Anger is terrifying and fierce in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalms%202%3A5&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psalm 2:5<\/a>. It\u2019s burning and consuming in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalms%2069%3A24&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psalm 69:24<\/a>, then smoldering intensely in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Psalms%2074&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Psalm 74<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prophets: <\/strong>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%209%3A12&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaiah 9:12<\/a>, it\u2019s associated with a fist poised to strike. In chapter 30, it\u2019s demonstrated with flames, cloudbursts, thunderstorms, and hailstones (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2030%3A30&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">verse 30<\/a>). In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Isaiah%2063%3A3&amp;version=NIV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isaiah 63:3<\/a>, it tramples. And it doesn\u2019t exactly chill out in Lamentations. The words \u201cengulfed\u201d and \u201cslaughtered\u201d are used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Lamentations%203%3A43&amp;version=NLT&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chapter 3, verse 43<\/a> (NLT).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not cherry-picking. There just aren\u2019t lots of references to anger in the Bible as something wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-gift-of-righteous-anger\">The \u2018Gift\u2019 of Righteous Anger?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we\u2019re often told anger is a \u201cgift\u201d for our use, when we feel it\u2019s \u201creasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re also told we should be aroused to anger when we see one of God\u2019s commands being broken. Really? Then we\u2019re going to be busy \u2026 really, really busy. We\u2019re also going to be really, really angry, all the time \u2014 and that\u2019s just at ourselves, for starters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe I\u2019m supposed to be angry that often, and maybe it really is a gift. Maybe it\u2019ll make my life more joyful and peaceful \u2026 so long as I don\u2019t also mind the burning, blazing, cloud-bursting, striking, thundering, hailing, tearing, piercing, trampling, slaughtering, boiling, and the occasional blasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this is, in fact, what we\u2019re supposed to do \u2014 experience \u201crighteous anger\u201d whenever we\u2019re made aware of one of God\u2019s commands being broken \u2014 we\u2019ll be precisely what the world doesn\u2019t need and largely believes we already are: a bunch of uptight, seething hypocrites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bible actually directs us to get rid of anger (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians%204%3A31&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ephesians 4:31<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Colossians%203%3A8&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Colossians 3:8<\/a>), but our idea of \u201crighteous anger\u201d turns that directive on its head: We can actually pat ourselves on the back for being offended and embracing anger. And all that boiling, piercing, corrosive power becomes part of our lives \u2014 and destroys us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-another-option-being-unoffendable\">Another Option: Being Unoffendable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only <em>can <\/em>we choose to be unoffendable; we <em>should <\/em>choose that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should forfeit our right to be offended. That means forfeiting our right to hold on to <em>anger<\/em>. When we do this, we\u2019ll be making a sacrifice that\u2019s very pleasing to God. It strikes at our very pride. It forces us not only to <em>think<\/em> about humility, but to actually <em>be<\/em> humble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I used to think it was incumbent upon a Christian to take offense. I now think <strong>we should be the most refreshingly unoffendable people on a planet that seems to spin on an axis of offense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually, it\u2019s not even \u201cforfeiting\u201d a right, because the right doesn\u2019t exist. We\u2019re told to forgive (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew%206%3A14-15%3B18%3A21-22&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matthew 6:14-15; 18:21-22<\/a>), and that means anger has to go, whether we\u2019ve decided our own anger is \u201crighteous\u201d or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-whose-anger-is-righteous\">Whose Anger Is Righteous?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We won\u2019t often admit this, but we <em>like <\/em>being angry. We don\u2019t like what <em>caused<\/em> the anger, to be sure; we just like thinking we\u2019ve \u201cgot\u201d something on someone. So-and-so did something wrong, sometimes horribly wrong, and anger offers us a sense of moral superiority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why we call it \u201crighteous anger,\u201d after all. It\u2019s moral and good, we want to think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problem is, \u201crighteous anger\u201d directed at someone is pretty tricky. It turns out that I tend to find Brant Hansen\u2019s anger more righteous than others\u2019 anger. This is because I\u2019m so darn right. I\u2019m me. I tend to side with me. My arguments are amazingly convincing to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But inconveniently, there\u2019s this proverb that says, \u201cYou may believe you are doing right, but the Lord will judge your reasons\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A2&amp;version=NCV&amp;utm_source=bg&amp;utm_medium=bglearn&amp;utm_campaign=righteous-anger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proverbs 16:2<\/a> NCV).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it\u2019s not just me. We all, apparently, find ourselves pretty darn convincing. <em>Of course<\/em> my anger is righteous. It\u2019s righteous because, clearly, I\u2019m right and they\u2019re wrong. My ways seem pure to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the moment, everyone\u2019s anger <em>always <\/em>seems righteous. Anger is a feeling, after all, and it sweeps over us and tells us we\u2019re being denied something we should have. It provides its own justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But an emotion is just an emotion. It\u2019s not critical thinking. Anger doesn\u2019t pause. <em>We<\/em> have to stop, and we have to question it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-anger-is-easy-love-is-hard\">Anger Is Easy. Love Is Hard<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We humans are experts at casting ourselves as victims and rewriting narratives that put us in the center of injustices. And we can repaint our anger or hatred of someone \u2014 say, anyone who threatens us \u2014 into a righteous-looking work of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet, remarkably, in Jesus\u2019 teaching, there is no allowance for \u201cOkay, well, if someone really is a jerk, then yeah \u2014 you need to be offended.\u201d We\u2019re flat-out told to forgive, even \u2014 especially! \u2014 the very stuff that\u2019s understandably maddening and legitimately offensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the whole point: <strong><em>The thing that you think makes your anger \u201crighteous\u201d is the very thing you are called to forgive.<\/em><\/strong> Grace isn\u2019t for the deserving. Forgiving means surrendering your claim to resentment and letting go of anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anger is extraordinarily easy. It\u2019s our default setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Love is very difficult. Love is a miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hand-it-over\">Hand It Over<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We think we want a right to \u201crighteous anger.\u201d It takes a tremendous amount of humility, an extraordinary \u201cdying to self\u201d to hand over this desire, this job, this obsession, to God. But He made us, and He knows how we operate best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says to hand it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And He\u2019s promising something of value that no one else \u2014 and literally, no other religion \u2014 promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s promising a release from the constant evaluation, never-ending striving, and relentless assessment of where we, and everyone else, stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s promising a better way of life. He\u2019s holding it out to us, saying, \u201cHand over the garbage\u201d \u2014 and He means it, because He loves us, and He has something better to offer.
