The third act in the story of God is all about his response to people. <\/em>It covers hundreds of years of history and focuses specifically on how God advanced his plan to redeem people from sin during these years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously<\/a>, we learned that sin entered the world when Adam and Eve first disobeyed God. From that moment in the garden, people struggled mightily to follow God. But God did not abandon them. Just the opposite; God got even more involved with people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey of the Israelites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Genesis 12<\/a> through Genesis 50 is the story of how the Israelites became a nation. It all began with God\u2019s promise to one man, Abram. \u201cI will make you into a great nation . . . all people on earth will be blessed through you (Genesis 12:2-3<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By Genesis 50<\/a>, the Israelites were living in Egypt and their numbers were swelling far beyond the pharaoh\u2019s comfort zone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we learned in our previous devotional, the ancient Egyptians brutally enslaved the Israelites (Exodus 1<\/a>). The famous story of Moses is about how God freed his people from slavery. Though generations had passed, God had not forgotten his promise to Abram or his promise to Eve that a savior would come (Genesis 3:15<\/a>), and so he set the Israelites on a course to a new homeland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the way, God gave the Israelites what we know as the Ten Commandments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ten Commandments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Read Exodus 20:1-18<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These rules were not a prerequisite for God\u2019s love and faithfulness. The Israelites had already experienced God\u2019s faithfulness and his miraculous power to save them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ten Commandments are about how to love God (vv. 6-11) and love others (vv. 12-18). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abiding by these commands, as well as the rest of the law, enabled the nation of Israel to live in harmony with God and bless \u201call people on earth,\u201d just as God promised Abram.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does all this history matter? Because God hasn\u2019t changed. He\u2019s still a promise-keeper. He\u2019s still forgiving people and setting them free from what binds them. He\u2019s still incensed by injustice (Isaiah 28:16-19<\/a>), and he\u2019s still powerful (Ephesians 1:18-21<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the God that created you and loves you. God loves people<\/em>\u2014including you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you, God, for loving people, including me. Thank you for being upset by injustice and for using your power to free enslaved people. Help me, please, by your power, to love you and to love people as much as you love me. Amen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He holds a Master of Theological Studies in Early Christian Thought from Harvard Divinity School, and a Bachelor of Arts in Religious History from Memorial University of Newfoundland, though with most of his coursework from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. His work has previously appeared in Ekstasis and Geez Magazine.
