{"id":3818,"date":"2024-07-19T07:13:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-19T11:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/learn\/?p=3818"},"modified":"2024-10-14T14:09:22","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T18:09:22","slug":"jesus-bible-devotional-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/learn\/voices\/devotionals\/jesus-bible-devotional-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesus Bible Devotional 3: Act II \u2014 Revolt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever felt like you\u2019re too sinful to be loved by God, then spend some time reading the Bible. The Bible is a record book of some <em>epic <\/em>sinning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In just the fourth chapter, one brother murders another in a jealous rage (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 4<\/a>). The Egyptians brutally enslaved the Israelites and committed infanticide (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Exodus+1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Exodus 1<\/a>). The Pharisees and Sadducees distorted God\u2019s law and exploited their positions of power (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+3%3A7-10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matthew 3:7-10<\/a>). Even David, a man whom God appointed as King over Israel, raped and murdered (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+Samuel+11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Samuel 11<\/a>).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separated from God&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, Act II in God\u2019s story is called Revolt because it\u2019s about how sin creates a separation between humanity and God that we cannot repair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned&#8230;&#8221; \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+5%3A12&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Romans 5:12<\/a> (NIV)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God\u2019s image-bearing creation \u2014 humans \u2014 revolted against their loving creator, condemning ourselves to eternity without him. It started in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve deliberately disobeyed God\u2019s command (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+3%3A1-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 3:1-8<\/a>). As today\u2019s passage says, \u201csin entered the world,\u201d through them and \u201cdeath came to all people, because all sinned.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8230;and Pursued by Him<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>But this act in God\u2019s story contains some good news, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as Adam and Eve committed that first sin, God began to pursue them. He immediately set a plan in motion for their redemption, promising that one day, a savior would come (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+3%3A15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 3:15<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>God still pursues and redeems sinners. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you take a minute to honestly, quietly reflect upon your life, you can probably think of sinful things you\u2019ve done. Lies you\u2019ve told. Things you\u2019ve stolen. Times when you\u2019ve treated others cruelly. Scripture is clear, \u201call have sinned and fall short of the glory of God\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Romans+3%3A23&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Romans 3:23<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But just as God provided for Adam and Eve, just as he freed the Israelites and forgave King David, so God will free, forgive, and provide for you, too. While we revolt, God redeems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reflection&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When has sin made it feel like God was far away? What did you do?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can you think of something you want to confess to God right now?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+John+1%3A9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1 John 1:9<\/a>. Take a minute and meditate on how God has forgiven you of your sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prayer&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear God, THANK YOU for forgiving me. You know what I\u2019ve done. You know how far I can stray sometimes, yet you love me and forgive me. Thank you for seeking me out when I\u2019m hiding in shame. Thank you for being a god who frees and forgives!
