(Some Protestant denominations, such as Lutherans and Anglicans, add them at the end of the Old Testament to separate them out.)

These books were written during the Intertestamental Period, the roughly four-and-a-half centuries between the final Hebrew Old Testament book and the birth of Jesus. They were included in the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Old Testament that was commonly used in the Roman Empire around the time of Jesus, and which became the preferred Bible of the early church. But they were never accepted as Scripture by the Jews, so when the Protestant Reformers reevaluated the biblical canon during the 16th and 17th centuries, they rejected those books as not being divinely inspired.

Today, there are several different perspectives on the Deuterocanonical books. Most Jews and Protestant Christians continue to ignore them altogether. Some Protestants acknowledge them as edifying due to their historical importance, but reject any claim to them being inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Catholics embrace the seven Deuterocanonical books, plus additions to Esther and Daniel, included in italics above as being fully inspired and infallible works of the Holy Spirit.

Eastern Orthodox churches add a few additional books, which Catholics do not accept, listed under that section above. The Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church adds even more, for the widest overall canon in the Christian world.

Why Is the Bible Organized This Way?

Today we might wonder why the Bible isn’t simply organized chronologically — either in the order they were written or they order they take place — and is instead sorted into these different categories. There is a long and fascinating answer to this, which we can’t explore in its full depth, but a few important points will help you wrap your head around the traditional method of organizing Scripture.

Chronological Complexity: First, if you ever try to read the Bible chronologically, you will see that it is very difficult to do so. Timelines overlap across different books, and many of them — especially among the prophets — are very difficult to date with accuracy. And that’s with all of our modern archaeological and historical research! In the ancient world, it would have been very difficult to know when, for instance, Obadiah took place.

Scrolls and Codices: It’s often said that the Bible is not actually a book, it’s a library. This is literally true: in the ancient world, it was impossible to include all the books of the Bible in a single volume, so they had to split them up (that’s how we got things like 1 and 2 Kings, which was originally composed as a single work). Originally this was done on long scrolls. Later, Christians used the “codex,” which is similar to a modern book. But in either case, since they had to split the books up anyway, it made sense to do it just as you would in a library today: by theme and subject.

Liturgical Use: In the ancient world, most people couldn’t read. The Bible was very seldom read straight through, front to back, by anyone. Instead, its primary use was liturgical, or “related to public worship.” Rabbis, priests, or bishops would often read or teach through an entire book, cross-referencing it with other, similar passages. So again, it was helpful to have them sorted thematically.

Interpretation: Finally, it must be said that ancient readers of the Bible were generally not interested in it as history in the way we are today. (They did usually believe it was historically true; that just wasn’t their primary concern.) They almost always sought deeper meanings — on moral, ethical, spiritual, theological, eschatological, analogical, and even symbolic levels — rather than narratives and timelines. So chronological organization would not necessarily have occurred to the church or rabbinical authorities as a valuable way to arrange the Bible, anyway.

Notice that none of these reasons include “because it was the only correct order.” Although the canon defined which books were divinely inspired, the order of the books (other than the Torah, at least) wasn’t part of the equation. If you want to read the Bible chronologically, or skip around and read in a totally different order, that’s OK!

How to Read Through the Bible in a Year

So, you want to read the Bible in canonical order? One of the best and most effective ways to do so is with a year-long reading plan. A year is a natural chunk of time, long enough to be a realistic goal and establish a consistent habit but short enough to make real progress through the Word daily.

Some people also do 2- or 3-year plans, which might work better for you if you’re in an especially busy season (I see you, parents of young children). Or if you’re feeling ambitious, you could even shoot for six months.

Here are some articles on Bible Gateway to help you get started building your Bible-reading habit:

How to Read the Entire Bible in a Year (and Actually Finish): A Practical Guide for the New Year by Tim Wildsmith

How to Start Reading the Bible: A Beginner’s Guide by Jacob Edson

If You Really Want to Understand the Bible, You Have to Play by the Book by Zach Windahl

If Your New Year’s Goal Is Reading the Bible More, Don’t Focus on the Finish Line by Faith Womack

Start Reading the Bible Like It’s Your Favorite Book by Matt Whitman

Best Bible Study Tools and Resources to Keep You Grounded in God’s Word by Arin Kurtz

Alternately, you can subscribe to one of Bible Gateway’s free reading plans and receive a daily email with your portion right in your inbox.
