35:1–29 Jacob’s journey through time, as indicated by births (vv. 16–18), deaths (vv. 8, 19, 20), and genealogies (vv. 23–26), and through space, as indicated by itineraries (vv. 6, 16, 21, 27), is brought to completion because God was with him (v. 3). He returns to pay his vow at Bethel (vv. 1–8), is confirmed as the successor to God’s Abrahamic promises (vv. 9–15), sees the twelve tribes of Israel safely settled in the Promised Land (vv. 16–26), and is reunited with his father and brother (vv. 27–29).
