Psalm 82

New International Version

Psalm 82

A psalm of Asaph.

¹God presides in the great assembly;
he renders judgment^(A) among the “gods”:^(B)

²“How long will you^[a] defend the unjust
    and show partiality^(C) to the wicked?^[b]^(D)
³Defend the weak and the fatherless;^(E)
    uphold the cause of the poor^(F) and the oppressed.
⁴Rescue the weak and the needy;
    deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

⁵“The ‘gods’ know nothing, they understand nothing.^(G)
They walk about in darkness;^(H)
all the foundations^(I) of the earth are shaken.

⁶“I said, ‘You are “gods”;^(J)
you are all sons of the Most High.’
⁷But you will die^(K) like mere mortals;
you will fall like every other ruler.”

⁸Rise up,^(L) O God, judge^(M) the earth,
for all the nations are your inheritance.^(N)

7 But the Israelites were unfaithful in regard to the devoted things^[a];^(A) Achan^(B) son of Karmi, the son of Zimri,^[b] the son of Zerah,^(C) of the tribe of Judah,^(D) took some of them. So the Lord’s anger burned^(E) against Israel.^(F)

Joshua 7:10-26

New International Version

¹⁰The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? ¹¹Israel has sinned;^(A) they have violated my covenant,^(B) which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied,^(C) they have put them with their own possessions.^(D) ¹²That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies;^(E) they turn their backs^(F) and run^(G) because they have been made liable to destruction.^(H) I will not be with you anymore^(I) unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.

¹³“Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, ‘Consecrate yourselves^(J) in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There are devoted things among you, Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.

¹⁴“‘In the morning, present^(K) yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe the Lord chooses^(L) shall come forward clan by clan; the clan the Lord chooses shall come forward family by family; and the family the Lord chooses shall come forward man by man. ¹⁵Whoever is caught with the devoted things^(M) shall be destroyed by fire,^(N) along with all that belongs to him.^(O) He has violated the covenant^(P) of the Lord and has done an outrageous thing in Israel!’”^(Q)

¹⁶Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was chosen. ¹⁷The clans of Judah came forward, and the Zerahites were chosen.^(R) He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was chosen. ¹⁸Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Karmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah,^(S) was chosen.^(T)

¹⁹Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory^(U) to the Lord, the God of Israel, and honor him. Tell^(V) me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”

²⁰Achan replied, “It is true! I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: ²¹When I saw in the plunder^(W) a beautiful robe from Babylonia,^[a] two hundred shekels^[b] of silver and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels,^[c] I coveted^(X) them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”

²²So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. ²³They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the Lord.

²⁴Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons^(Y) and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.^(Z) ²⁵Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble^(AA) on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.”

Then all Israel stoned him,^(AB) and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them.^(AC) ²⁶Over Achan they heaped^(AD) up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day.^(AE) Then the Lord turned from his fierce anger.^(AF) Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor^[d]^(AG) ever since.

²⁶If we deliberately keep on sinning^(A) after we have received the knowledge of the truth,^(B) no sacrifice for sins is left, ²⁷but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire^(C) that will consume the enemies of God. ²⁸Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.^(D) ²⁹How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God^(E) underfoot,^(F) who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant^(G) that sanctified them,^(H) and who has insulted the Spirit^(I) of grace?^(J) ³⁰For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[a]^(K) and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”^[b]^(L) ³¹It is a dreadful thing^(M) to fall into the hands^(N) of the living God.^(O)
