Psalm 65

New International Version

Psalm 65^[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David. A song.

¹Praise awaits^[b] you, our God, in Zion;^(A)
    to you our vows will be fulfilled.^(B)
²You who answer prayer,
    to you all people will come.^(C)
³When we were overwhelmed by sins,^(D)
    you forgave^[c] our transgressions.^(E)
⁴Blessed are those you choose^(F)
    and bring near^(G) to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,^(H)
    of your holy temple.

⁵You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,^(I)
    God our Savior,^(J)
the hope of all the ends of the earth^(K)
    and of the farthest seas,^(L)
⁶who formed the mountains^(M) by your power,
    having armed yourself with strength,^(N)
⁷who stilled the roaring of the seas,^(O)
    the roaring of their waves,
    and the turmoil of the nations.^(P)
⁸The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders;
    where morning dawns, where evening fades,
    you call forth songs of joy.^(Q)

⁹You care for the land and water it;^(R)
    you enrich it abundantly.^(S)
The streams of God are filled with water
    to provide the people with grain,^(T)
    for so you have ordained it.^[d]
¹⁰You drench its furrows and level its ridges;
    you soften it with showers^(U) and bless its crops.
¹¹You crown the year with your bounty,^(V)
    and your carts overflow with abundance.^(W)
¹²The grasslands of the wilderness overflow;^(X)
    the hills are clothed with gladness.^(Y)
¹³The meadows are covered with flocks^(Z)
    and the valleys are mantled with grain;^(AA)
    they shout for joy and sing.^(AB)

The Plague of Hail

¹³Then the Lord said to Moses, “Get up early in the morning, confront Pharaoh and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so that they may worship^(A) me, ¹⁴or this time I will send the full force of my plagues against you and against your officials and your people, so you may know^(B) that there is no one like^(C) me in all the earth. ¹⁵For by now I could have stretched out my hand and struck you and your people^(D) with a plague that would have wiped you off the earth. ¹⁶But I have raised you up^[a] for this very purpose,^(E) that I might show you my power^(F) and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth. ¹⁷You still set yourself against my people and will not let them go. ¹⁸Therefore, at this time tomorrow I will send the worst hailstorm^(G) that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded till now.^(H) ¹⁹Give an order now to bring your livestock and everything you have in the field to a place of shelter, because the hail will fall on every person and animal that has not been brought in and is still out in the field, and they will die.’”

²⁰Those officials of Pharaoh who feared^(I) the word of the Lord hurried to bring their slaves and their livestock inside. ²¹But those who ignored^(J) the word of the Lord left their slaves and livestock in the field.

²²Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward the sky so that hail will fall all over Egypt—on people and animals and on everything growing in the fields of Egypt.” ²³When Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, the Lord sent thunder^(K) and hail,^(L) and lightning flashed down to the ground. So the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt; ²⁴hail fell and lightning flashed back and forth. It was the worst storm in all the land of Egypt since it had become a nation.^(M) ²⁵Throughout Egypt hail struck everything in the fields—both people and animals; it beat down everything growing in the fields and stripped every tree.^(N) ²⁶The only place it did not hail was the land of Goshen,^(O) where the Israelites were.^(P)

²⁷Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron. “This time I have sinned,”^(Q) he said to them. “The Lord is in the right,^(R) and I and my people are in the wrong. ²⁸Pray^(S) to the Lord, for we have had enough thunder and hail. I will let you go;^(T) you don’t have to stay any longer.”

²⁹Moses replied, “When I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands^(U) in prayer to the Lord. The thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so you may know that the earth^(V) is the Lord’s. ³⁰But I know that you and your officials still do not fear^(W) the Lord God.”

³¹(The flax and barley^(X) were destroyed, since the barley had headed and the flax was in bloom. ³²The wheat and spelt,^(Y) however, were not destroyed, because they ripen later.)

³³Then Moses left Pharaoh and went out of the city. He spread out his hands toward the Lord; the thunder and hail stopped, and the rain no longer poured down on the land. ³⁴When Pharaoh saw that the rain and hail and thunder had stopped, he sinned again: He and his officials hardened their hearts. ³⁵So Pharaoh’s heart^(Z) was hard and he would not let the Israelites go, just as the Lord had said through Moses.

³⁹When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach,^(A) where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. ⁴⁰Cutting loose the anchors,^(B) they left them in the sea and at the same time untied the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach. ⁴¹But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.^(C)

⁴²The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping. ⁴³But the centurion wanted to spare Paul’s life^(D) and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. ⁴⁴The rest were to get there on planks or on other pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land safely.^(E)
