⁷ Hopes placed in mortals die with them;^(A)
    all the promise of^[a] their power comes to nothing.^(B)

⁸ Whoever increases wealth by taking interest^(A) or profit from the poor
    amasses it for another,^(B) who will be kind to the poor.^(C)

¹¹ You levy a straw tax on the poor^(A)
    and impose a tax on their grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,^(B)
    you will not live in them;^(C)
though you have planted lush vineyards,
    you will not drink their wine.^(D)

¹² For I know how many are your offenses
    and how great your sins.^(A)

There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes^(B)
    and deprive the poor^(C) of justice in the courts.^(D)

“When will the New Moon^(A) be over
    that we may sell grain,
and the Sabbath be ended
    that we may market^(B) wheat?”^(C)—
skimping on the measure,
    boosting the price
    and cheating^(D) with dishonest scales,^(E)

⁸ “Will not the land tremble^(A) for this,
    and all who live in it mourn?
The whole land will rise like the Nile;
    it will be stirred up and then sink
    like the river of Egypt.^(B)
