³⁸ Two rebels were crucified with him,^(A) one on his right and one on his left. ³⁹ Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^{(B) 40} and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^(C) save yourself!^(D) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”^{(E) 41} In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. ⁴² “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!^(F) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe^(G) in him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God rescue him^(H) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ⁴⁴ In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

²⁷ They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left. ^{[28] [a] 29} Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads^(A) and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,^{(B) 30} come down from the cross and save yourself!” ³¹ In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him^(C) among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! ³² Let this Messiah,^(D) this king of Israel,^(E) come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus^(F)

³³ At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.^{(G) 34} And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).^[b](H)
