The Crucifixion

^32 (A)(B)As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to ^(C)carry his cross. ^33 (D)And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), ^34 (E)they offered him wine to drink, mixed with ^(F)gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. ³⁵ And when they had crucified him, ^(G)they divided his garments among them by casting lots. ³⁶ Then they sat down and ^(H)kept watch over him there. ³⁷ And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, ^(I)the King of the Jews.” ³⁸ Then two ^(J)robbers were crucified with him, ^(K)one on the right and one on the left. ³⁹ And ^(L)those who passed by ^(M)derided him, ^(N)wagging their heads ⁴⁰ and saying, ^(O)“You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! ^(P)If you are ^(Q)the Son of God, come down from the cross.” ⁴¹ So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, ^42 (R)“He saved others; ^(S)he cannot save himself. ^(T)He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. ^43 (U)He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” ^44 (V)And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

The Crucifixion

^21 (A)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. ^22 (B)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). ²³ And they offered him wine mixed with ^(C)myrrh, but he did not take it. ²⁴ And they crucified him and ^(D)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. ²⁵ And ^(E)it was the third hour^[a] when they crucified him. ²⁶ And the inscription of the charge against him read, ^(F)“The King of the Jews.” ²⁷ And with him they crucified two ^(G)robbers, ^(H)one on his right and one on his left.^{[b] 29} And ^(I)those who passed by derided him, ^(J)wagging their heads and saying, ^(K)“Aha! ^(L)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, ³⁰ save yourself, and come down from the cross!” ³¹ So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, ^(M)“He saved others; ^(N)he cannot save himself. ³² Let ^(O)the Christ, ^(P)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may ^(Q)see and believe.” ^(R)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Crucifixion

^26 (A)And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. ²⁷ And there followed him a great multitude of the people and of women who were ^(B)mourning and lamenting for him. ²⁸ But turning to them Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. ²⁹ For behold, ^(C)the days are coming when they will say, ^(D)‘Blessed are the barren and the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ ^30 (E)Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ ³¹ For ^(F)if they do these things when ^(G)the wood is green, what will happen ^(H)when it is dry?”

^32 (I)Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. ^33 (J)And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, ^(K)one on his right and one on his left. ³⁴ And Jesus said, “Father, ^(L)forgive them, ^(M)for they know not what they do.”^[a] And they cast lots ^(N)to divide his garments. ³⁵ And ^(O)the people stood by, watching, ^(P)but ^(Q)the rulers ^(R)scoffed at him, saying, ^(S)“He saved others; ^(T)let him save himself, ^(U)if he is ^(V)the Christ of God, ^(W)his Chosen One!” ³⁶ The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and ^(X)offering him sour wine ³⁷ and saying, ^(Y)“If you are ^(Z)the King of the Jews, save yourself!” ^38 (AA)There was also an inscription over him,^[b] “This is ^(AB)the King of the Jews.”

^39 (AC)One of the criminals who were hanged ^(AD)railed at him,^[c] saying, “Are you not ^(AE)the Christ? Save yourself and us!” ⁴⁰ But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? ⁴¹ And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” ⁴² And he said, “Jesus, remember me ^(AF)when you come into your kingdom.” ⁴³ And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in ^(AG)paradise.”

^16 (A)So he ^(B)delivered him over to them to be crucified.

The Crucifixion

So they took Jesus, ¹⁷ and ^(C)he went out, ^(D)bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. ^18 (E)There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. ¹⁹ Pilate ^(F)also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” ²⁰ Many of the Jews read this inscription, for ^(G)the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. ²¹ So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” ²² Pilate answered, ^(H)“What I have written I have written.”

^23 (I)When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.^[a] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, ²⁴ so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” ^(J)This was to fulfill the Scripture which says,

So the soldiers did these things, ^25 (L)but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. ²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother and ^(M)the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ^(N)“Woman, behold, your son!” ²⁷ Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to ^(O)his own home.
