22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me from the cave.” 23 And they did so, and brought those five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon. 24 And when they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who had gone with him, “Come near; put your feet on the necks of these kings.” Then they came near and put their feet on their necks. 25 And Joshua said to them, (A)“Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous. (B)For thus the Lord will do to all your enemies against whom you fight.” 26 And afterward Joshua struck them and put them to death, and he hanged them on five trees. And (C)they hung on the trees until evening. 27 But at the time of the going down of the sun, Joshua commanded, and (D)they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves, and they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.

28 As for (E)Makkedah, Joshua captured it on that day and struck it, and its king, with the edge of the sword. He devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah (F)just as he had done to the king of Jericho.

Conquest of Southern Canaan

29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Makkedah to (G)Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30 And the Lord gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel. And he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left none remaining in it. And he did to its king (H)as he had done to the king of Jericho.

31 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Libnah to (I)Lachish and laid siege to it and fought against it. 32 And the Lord gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.

33 Then Horam king of (J)Gezer came up to help Lachish. And Joshua struck him and his people, until he left none remaining.

34 Then Joshua and all Israel with him passed on from Lachish to (K)Eglon. And they laid siege to it and fought against it. 35 And they captured it on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword. And he devoted every person in it to destruction that day, as he had done to Lachish.

36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to (L)Hebron. And they fought against it 37 and captured it and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it. He left none remaining, as he had done to Eglon, and devoted it to destruction and every person in it.

38 Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned back to (M)Debir and fought against it 39 and he captured it with its king and all its towns. And they struck them with the edge of the sword and devoted to destruction every person in it; he left none remaining. Just as he had done to Hebron and to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and to its king.

40 So Joshua struck the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland (N)and the slopes, and all their kings. He left none remaining, (O)but devoted to destruction all that breathed, just as the Lord God of Israel commanded. 41 And Joshua struck them from (P)Kadesh-barnea as far as Gaza, and all the country of (Q)Goshen, as far as Gibeon. 42 And Joshua captured all these kings and their land at one time, (R)because the Lord God of Israel fought for Israel. 43 (S)Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

Conquests in Northern Canaan

11 When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of this, he (T)sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph, and to the kings who were in the northern hill country, and in the (U)Arabah south of (V)Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and (W)in Naphoth-dor on the (X)west, to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the (Y)Jebusites in the hill country, and the (Z)Hivites under (AA)Hermon in the land of (AB)Mizpah. And they came out with all their troops, a great horde, in number (AC)like the sand that is on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots. And all these kings joined their forces and came and encamped together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel.

And the Lord said to Joshua, (AD)“Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will give over all of them, slain, to Israel. You shall (AE)hamstring their horses and burn their (AF)chariots with fire.” So Joshua and all his warriors came (AG)suddenly against them by the waters of Merom and fell upon them. And the Lord gave them into the hand of Israel, who struck them and chased them as far as (AH)Great Sidon and (AI)Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the Valley of (AJ)Mizpeh. And they struck them until he left none remaining. And Joshua did to them (AK)just as the Lord said to him: he hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

10 And Joshua turned back at that time and captured (AL)Hazor and struck its king with the sword, for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms. 11 And they struck with the sword all who were in it, devoting them to destruction;[a] (AM)there was none left that breathed. And he burned Hazor with fire. 12 And all the cities of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua captured, and struck them with the edge of the sword, devoting them to destruction, (AN)just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded. 13 But none of the cities that stood on mounds did Israel burn, except Hazor alone; that Joshua burned. 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the livestock, the people of Israel took for their plunder. But every person they struck with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed. 15 (AO)Just as the Lord had commanded Moses his servant, (AP)so Moses commanded Joshua, (AQ)and so Joshua did. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord had commanded Moses.

16 So Joshua took all that land, (AR)the hill country and all the Negeb and (AS)all the land of Goshen (AT)and the lowland (AU)and the Arabah (AV)and the hill country of Israel and its lowland 17 (AW)from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as (AX)Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon below (AY)Mount Hermon. And he captured (AZ)all their kings and struck them and put them to death. 18 Joshua made war (BA)a long time with all those kings. 19 There was not a city that made peace with the people of Israel except (BB)the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. They took them all in battle. 20 For it was the Lord's doing (BC)to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, (BD)just as the Lord commanded Moses.

21 And Joshua came at that time and cut off (BE)the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction with their cities. 22 There was none of the Anakim left in the land of the people of Israel. Only in Gaza, (BF)in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain. 23 So Joshua took the whole land, (BG)according to all that the Lord had spoken to Moses. (BH)And Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel (BI)according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.

Kings Defeated by Moses

12 Now these are the kings of the land whom the people of Israel defeated and took possession of their land beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise, from (BJ)the Valley of the Arnon to Mount Hermon, with all (BK)the Arabah eastward: (BL)Sihon king of the Amorites who lived at Heshbon and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and (BM)from the middle of the valley as far as the (BN)river Jabbok, the boundary of the Ammonites, that is, half of Gilead, and (BO)the Arabah (BP)to the Sea of Chinneroth eastward, and in the direction of Beth-jeshimoth, to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, southward to the foot of (BQ)the slopes of Pisgah; and (BR)Og[b] king of Bashan, one of the remnant of (BS)the Rephaim, (BT)who lived at Ashtaroth and at Edrei and ruled over (BU)Mount Hermon and (BV)Salecah and all Bashan (BW)to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and over half of Gilead to the boundary of Sihon king of Heshbon. (BX)Moses, the servant of the Lord, and the people of Israel defeated them. And Moses the servant of the Lord (BY)gave their land for a possession to the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

Kings Defeated by Joshua

And these are the kings of the land whom Joshua and the people of Israel defeated on the west side of the Jordan, from Baal-gad in the Valley of Lebanon to (BZ)Mount Halak, that rises toward Seir (and Joshua gave their land to the tribes of Israel as a possession (CA)according to their allotments, (CB)in the hill country, in the lowland, in the Arabah, in the slopes, in the wilderness, and in the Negeb, the land of (CC)the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites): (CD)the king of Jericho, one; (CE)the king of Ai, which is beside Bethel, one; 10 (CF)the king of Jerusalem, one; (CG)the king of Hebron, one; 11 (CH)the king of Jarmuth, one; (CI)the king of Lachish, one; 12 (CJ)the king of Eglon, one; (CK)the king of Gezer, one; 13 (CL)the king of Debir, one; the king of Geder, one; 14 the king of Hormah, one; the king of Arad, one; 15 (CM)the king of Libnah, one; the king of Adullam, one; 16 (CN)the king of Makkedah, one; (CO)the king of Bethel, one; 17 the king of Tappuah, one; the king of Hepher, one; 18 the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one; 19 (CP)the king of Madon, one; (CQ)the king of Hazor, one; 20 (CR)the king of Shimron-meron, one; (CS)the king of Achshaph, one; 21 (CT)the king of Taanach, one; (CU)the king of Megiddo, one; 22 the king of Kedesh, one; the king of Jokneam in Carmel, one; 23 (CV)the king of Dor in (CW)Naphath-dor, one; the king of Goiim in Galilee,[c] one; 24 the king of Tirzah, one: in all, thirty-one kings.

Land Still to Be Conquered

13 Now Joshua (CX)was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land (CY)to possess. (CZ)This is the land that yet remains: all the (DA)regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the (DB)Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; (DC)there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of (DD)the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of (DE)the Amorites, and the land of the (DF)Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from (DG)Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to (DH)Lebo-hamath, all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to (DI)Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive (DJ)them out from before the people of Israel. Only (DK)allot the land to Israel (DL)for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore (DM)divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

The Inheritance East of the Jordan

With the other half of the tribe of Manasseh[d] the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance, (DN)which Moses gave them, beyond the Jordan eastward, as Moses the servant of the Lord gave them: (DO)from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and (DP)all the tableland of Medeba as far as Dibon; 10 (DQ)and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, as far as the boundary of the Ammonites; 11 and Gilead, and the (DR)region of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and all Mount Hermon, and (DS)all Bashan to Salecah; 12 (DT)all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei (he alone was left of (DU)the remnant of the Rephaim); (DV)these Moses had struck and driven out. 13 (DW)Yet the people of Israel did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maacathites, but Geshur and Maacath dwell in the midst of Israel to this day.

14 (DX)To the tribe of Levi alone Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance, as he said to him.

15 And Moses gave an inheritance to the tribe of the people of Reuben according to their clans. 16 So their territory was from Aroer, (DY)which is on the edge of the Valley of the Arnon, and the city that is in the middle of the valley, and all the tableland by (DZ)Medeba; 17 with Heshbon, and all its cities that are in the tableland; (EA)Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, 18 (EB)and Jahaz, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, 19 and (EC)Kiriathaim, and (ED)Sibmah, and Zereth-shahar on the hill of the valley, 20 and (EE)Beth-peor, and (EF)the slopes of Pisgah, and (EG)Beth-jeshimoth, 21 that is, (EH)all the cities of the tableland, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, (EI)whom Moses defeated with (EJ)the leaders of Midian, Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who lived in the land. 22 (EK)Balaam also, the son of Beor, the one who practiced divination, was killed with the sword by the people of Israel among the rest of their slain. 23 And the border of the people of Reuben was the Jordan as a boundary. This was the inheritance of the people of Reuben, according to their clans with their cities and villages.
