Jesus Appears to His Disciples

¹⁹On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders,^(A) Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace^(B) be with you!”^(C) ²⁰After he said this, he showed them his hands and side.^(D) The disciples were overjoyed^(E) when they saw the Lord.

²¹Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!^(F) As the Father has sent me,^(G) I am sending you.”^(H) ²²And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.^(I) ²³If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”^(J)

Jesus Appears to Thomas

²⁴Now Thomas^(K) (also known as Didymus^[a]), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. ²⁵So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side,^(L) I will not believe.”^(M)

²⁶A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace^(N) be with you!”^(O) ²⁷Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”^(P)

²⁸Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

²⁹Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed;^(Q) blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”^(R)

The Purpose of John’s Gospel

³⁰Jesus performed many other signs^(S) in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.^(T) ³¹But these are written that you may believe^[b]^(U) that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,^(V) and that by believing you may have life in his name.^(W)

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples,^(X) by the Sea of Galilee.^[c]^(Y) It happened this way: ²Simon Peter, Thomas^(Z) (also known as Didymus^[d]), Nathanael^(AA) from Cana in Galilee,^(AB) the sons of Zebedee,^(AC) and two other disciples were together. ³“I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.^(AD)

⁴Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.^(AE)

⁵He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

⁶He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.^(AF)

⁷Then the disciple whom Jesus loved^(AG) said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. ⁸The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.^[e] ⁹When they landed, they saw a fire^(AH) of burning coals there with fish on it,^(AI) and some bread.

¹⁰Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” ¹¹So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. ¹²Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. ¹³Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish.^(AJ) ¹⁴This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples^(AK) after he was raised from the dead.
