³⁶ Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”^(A)

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now,^(B) but you will follow later.”^(C)

³⁷ Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

³⁸ Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!^(D)

¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you^(A) so that you might go and bear fruit^(B)—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.^{(C) 17} This is my command: Love each other.^(D)

The World Hates the Disciples

¹⁸ “If the world hates you,^(E) keep in mind that it hated me first. ¹⁹ If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you^(F) out of the world. That is why the world hates you.^{(G) 20} Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’^[a](H) If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.^(I) If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. ²¹ They will treat you this way because of my name,^(J) for they do not know the one who sent me.^{(K) 22} If I had not come and spoken to them,^(L) they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.^{(M) 23} Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works no one else did,^(N) they would not be guilty of sin.^(O) As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. ²⁵ But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:^(P) ‘They hated me without reason.’^[b](Q)

The Work of the Holy Spirit

²⁶ “When the Advocate^(R) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father^(S)—the Spirit of truth^(T) who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.^{(U) 27} And you also must testify,^(V) for you have been with me from the beginning.^(W)

16 “All this^(X) I have told you so that you will not fall away.^{(Y) 2} They will put you out of the synagogue;^(Z) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.^{(AA) 3} They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.^{(AB) 4} I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember^(AC) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,^(AD)

³¹ “Do you now believe?” Jesus replied. ³² “A time is coming^(A) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,^(B) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.^(C) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.^(D)

³³ “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.^(E) In this world you will have trouble.^(F) But take heart! I have overcome^(G) the world.”
