⁵ “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Like these good figs, so I will regard as good the exiles from Judah, ^(A)whom I have sent away from this place to the land of the Chaldeans.

^19 (A)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.

⁵ And have you forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons?

⁷ It is for discipline that you have to endure. ^(D)God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ If you are left without discipline, ^(E)in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. ⁹ Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to ^(F)the Father of spirits ^(G)and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, ^(H)that we may share his holiness.

¹⁹ But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: ^(A)“The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone ^(B)who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”

⁹ But now that you have come to know God, or rather ^(A)to be known by God, ^(B)how can you turn back again to ^(C)the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?

³ But if anyone loves God, ^(A)he is known by God.^[a]

²⁸ And we know that for those who love God all things work together ^(A)for good,^[a] for ^(B)those who are called according to his purpose.
