They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves(F) and in holes in the ground.

39 These were all commended(G) for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised,(H) 40 since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us(I) would they be made perfect.(J)

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job?(A) There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God(B) and shuns evil.”(C)

“Does Job fear God for nothing?”(D) Satan replied. 10 “Have you not put a hedge(E) around him and his household and everything he has?(F) You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.(G) 11 But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has,(H) and he will surely curse you to your face.”(I)

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has(J) is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”(K)

Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

13 One day when Job’s sons and daughters(L) were feasting(M) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 14 a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing(N) nearby, 15 and the Sabeans(O) attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

16 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The fire of God fell from the heavens(P) and burned up the sheep and the servants,(Q) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

17 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, “The Chaldeans(R) formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

18 While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, “Your sons and daughters(S) were feasting(T) and drinking wine at the oldest brother’s house, 19 when suddenly a mighty wind(U) swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It collapsed on them and they are dead,(V) and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!(W)

20 At this, Job got up and tore his robe(X) and shaved his head.(Y) Then he fell to the ground in worship(Z) 21 and said:

23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe—the ornate robe(A) he was wearing— 24 and they took him and threw him into the cistern.(B) The cistern was empty; there was no water in it.

25 As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites(C) coming from Gilead.(D) Their camels were loaded with spices, balm(E) and myrrh,(F) and they were on their way to take them down to Egypt.(G)

26 Judah(H) said to his brothers, “What will we gain if we kill our brother and cover up his blood?(I) 27 Come, let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay our hands on him; after all, he is our brother,(J) our own flesh and blood.(K)” His brothers agreed.

28 So when the Midianite(L) merchants came by, his brothers pulled Joseph up out of the cistern(M) and sold(N) him for twenty shekels[a] of silver(O) to the Ishmaelites,(P) who took him to Egypt.(Q)

But he refused.(B) “With me in charge,” he told her, “my master does not concern himself with anything in the house; everything he owns he has entrusted to my care.(C) No one is greater in this house than I am.(D) My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?”(E) 10 And though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused(F) to go to bed with her or even be with her.

11 One day he went into the house to attend to his duties,(G) and none of the household servants(H) was inside. 12 She caught him by his cloak(I) and said, “Come to bed with me!”(J) But he left his cloak in her hand and ran out of the house.(K)

13 When she saw that he had left his cloak in her hand and had run out of the house, 14 she called her household servants.(L) “Look,” she said to them, “this Hebrew(M) has been brought to us to make sport of us!(N) He came in here to sleep with me, but I screamed.(O) 15 When he heard me scream for help, he left his cloak beside me and ran out of the house.”(P)

BOOK III

Psalms 73–89

Psalm 73

A psalm of Asaph.

Surely God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.(A)

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;(B)
    I had nearly lost my foothold.(C)
For I envied(D) the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.(E)

They have no struggles;
    their bodies are healthy and strong.[a]
They are free(F) from common human burdens;
    they are not plagued by human ills.
Therefore pride(G) is their necklace;(H)
    they clothe themselves with violence.(I)
From their callous hearts(J) comes iniquity[b];
    their evil imaginations have no limits.
They scoff, and speak with malice;(K)
    with arrogance(L) they threaten oppression.(M)
Their mouths lay claim to heaven,
    and their tongues take possession of the earth.
10 Therefore their people turn to them
    and drink up waters in abundance.[c]
11 They say, “How would God know?
    Does the Most High know anything?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—
    always free of care,(N) they go on amassing wealth.(O)

13 Surely in vain(P) I have kept my heart pure
    and have washed my hands in innocence.(Q)
14 All day long I have been afflicted,(R)
    and every morning brings new punishments.

15 If I had spoken out like that,
    I would have betrayed your children.
16 When I tried to understand(S) all this,
    it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary(T) of God;
    then I understood their final destiny.(U)

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;(V)
    you cast them down to ruin.(W)
19 How suddenly(X) are they destroyed,
    completely swept away(Y) by terrors!
20 They are like a dream(Z) when one awakes;(AA)
    when you arise, Lord,
    you will despise them as fantasies.(AB)

17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a](A) to Caesar or not?”

Submission to Governing Authorities

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities,(A) for there is no authority except that which God has established.(B) The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted,(C) and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended.(D) For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.(E) Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.(F)

This is also why you pay taxes,(G) for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes;(H) if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Favoritism Forbidden

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious(A) Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.(B) Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,” have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges(C) with evil thoughts?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters:(D) Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world(E) to be rich in faith(F) and to inherit the kingdom(G) he promised those who love him?(H) But you have dishonored the poor.(I) Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?(J) Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,”[a](K) you are doing right. But if you show favoritism,(L) you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.(M)

The Believers Share Their Possessions

32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.(A) 33 With great power the apostles continued to testify(B) to the resurrection(C) of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace(D) was so powerfully at work in them all 34 that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,(E) brought the money from the sales 35 and put it at the apostles’ feet,(F) and it was distributed to anyone who had need.(G)
