⁵ for ^(A)John baptized ^[a]with water, but you will be baptized ^[b]with the Holy Spirit ^[c](B)not many days from now.”

The Day of Pentecost

2 When ^(A)the day of Pentecost ^[a]had come, they were all together in one place. ² And suddenly a noise like a violent rushing wind came from heaven, and it filled ^(B)the whole house where they were sitting. ³ And tongues that looked like fire appeared to them, ^[b]distributing themselves, and a tongue ^[c]rested on each one of them. ⁴ And they were all ^(C)filled with the Holy Spirit and began to ^(D)speak with different ^[d]tongues, as the Spirit was giving them the ability to speak out.

³⁸ Peter said to them, “^(A)Repent, and each of you be ^(B)baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For ^(C)the promise is for you and your children and for all who are ^(D)far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.”

¹⁴ Now when ^(A)the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them ^(B)Peter and John, ¹⁵ who came down and prayed for them ^(C)that they would receive the Holy Spirit. ¹⁶ (For He had ^(D)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been ^(E)baptized ^[a]in the name of the Lord Jesus.) ¹⁷ Then they ^(F)began laying their hands on them, and they were ^(G)receiving the Holy Spirit.

^38 [a]You know of ^(A)Jesus of Nazareth, how God ^(B)anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, ^[b](C)and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for ^(D)God was with Him.

⁴⁴ While Peter was still speaking these words, ^(A)the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the ^[a]message. ^45 (B)All the ^[b]Jewish believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had also been ^(C)poured out on the Gentiles. ⁴⁶ For they were hearing them ^(D)speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter responded, ⁴⁷ “^(E)Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized, who ^(F)have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

¹⁵ And as I began to speak, ^(A)the Holy Spirit fell upon them just ^(B)as He did upon us at the beginning. ¹⁶ And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He used to say, ‘^(C)John baptized with water, but you will be baptized ^[a]with the Holy Spirit.’ ¹⁷ Therefore, if ^(D)God gave them the same gift as He also gave to us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, ^(E)who was I that I could ^[b]stand in God’s way?”

Paul in Ephesus

19 Now it happened that while ^(A)Apollos was in ^(B)Corinth, Paul passed through the ^(C)upper country and came to ^(D)Ephesus, and found some disciples. ² He said to them, “^(E)Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said to him, “On the contrary, ^(F)we have not even heard if there is a Holy Spirit.” ³ And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” And they said, “^(G)Into John’s baptism.” ⁴ Paul said, “^(H)John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people ^(I)to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” ⁵ When they heard this, they were ^(J)baptized ^[a]in the name of the Lord Jesus. ⁶ And when Paul had ^(K)laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began ^(L)speaking with tongues and ^(M)prophesying.
