¹⁷ For this reason I have sent to you^(A) Timothy,^(B) my son^(C) whom I love, who is faithful in the Lord. He will remind you of my way of life in Christ Jesus, which agrees with what I teach everywhere in every church.^(D)

²² But you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father^(A) he has served with me in the work of the gospel.

² To Timothy^(A) my true son^(B) in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.^(C)

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

¹⁸ Timothy, my son,^(A) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,^(B) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,^(C)

Thanksgiving

³ I thank God,^(D) whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience,^(E) as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.^{(F) 4} Recalling your tears,^(G) I long to see you,^(H) so that I may be filled with joy.
