Psalm 139:13-18

New International Version

¹³For you created my inmost being;^(A)
    you knit me together^(B) in my mother’s womb.^(C)
¹⁴I praise you^(D) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,^(E)
    I know that full well.
¹⁵My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made^(F) in the secret place,
    when I was woven together^(G) in the depths of the earth.^(H)
¹⁶Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained^(I) for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
¹⁷How precious to me are your thoughts,^[a]^(J) God!^(K)
    How vast is the sum of them!
¹⁸Were I to count them,^(L)
    they would outnumber the grains of sand^(M)—
    when I awake,^(N) I am still with you.

Genesis 35:16-29

The Deaths of Rachel and Isaac^(A)

¹⁶Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath,^(B) Rachel^(C) began to give birth and had great difficulty. ¹⁷And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife^(D) said to her, “Don’t despair, for you have another son.”^(E) ¹⁸As she breathed her last—for she was dying—she named her son Ben-Oni.^[a]^(F) But his father named him Benjamin.^[b]^(G)

¹⁹So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath^(H) (that is, Bethlehem^(I)). ²⁰Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day^(J) that pillar marks Rachel’s tomb.^(K)

²¹Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.^(L) ²²While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father’s concubine^(M) Bilhah,^(N) and Israel heard of it.

Jacob had twelve sons:

²³The sons of Leah:^(O)

Reuben the firstborn^(P) of Jacob,

Simeon, Levi, Judah,^(Q) Issachar and Zebulun.^(R)

²⁴The sons of Rachel:

Joseph^(S) and Benjamin.^(T)

²⁵The sons of Rachel’s servant Bilhah:^(U)

Dan and Naphtali.^(V)

²⁶The sons of Leah’s servant Zilpah:^(W)

Gad^(X) and Asher.^(Y)

These were the sons of Jacob,^(Z) who were born to him in Paddan Aram.^(AA)

²⁷Jacob came home to his father Isaac^(AB) in Mamre,^(AC) near Kiriath Arba^(AD) (that is, Hebron),^(AE) where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.^(AF) ²⁸Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.^(AG) ²⁹Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people,^(AH) old and full of years.^(AI) And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.^(AJ)

God’s Chosen Servant

¹⁵Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill.^(A) ¹⁶He warned them not to tell others about him.^(B) ¹⁷This was to fulfill^(C) what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

¹⁸“Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
    the one I love, in whom I delight;^(D)
I will put my Spirit on him,^(E)
    and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
¹⁹He will not quarrel or cry out;
    no one will hear his voice in the streets.
²⁰A bruised reed he will not break,
    and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
²¹    In his name the nations will put their hope.”^[a]^(F)
