\u201cThe work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.\u201d<\/em> John 6:29 (NIV)<\/a><\/p>\n

Years ago if you had asked me to name my favorite kitchen cooking task, I\u2019d have answered, \u201cBaking bread.\u201d A friend\u2019s hearty wholewheat bread recipe made a heavy loaf\u2014filling, satisfying, and a good Christmas gift for neighbors who didn\u2019t bake their own bread.<\/p>\n

Arepa. Brioche. Chapati. Foccacia. Injera. Matzo. Naan. Obi Non (not to be confused with Obi-Wan). Pita. Rieska. Tortillas. Wonder. Zopf.<\/p>\n

Every culture, every region, every era\u2019s culinary history includes some version of bread. Many of them look and taste similar, especially the flat varieties.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no wonder (pardon the pun) that Jesus used a common\u2014cross-cultural, multigenerational, multiethnic, timeless item like bread for many of His illustrations. In John 6:26\u201335<\/a> (NIV), shortly after the feeding of the five thousand, he makes references to himself as the Bread of Life. \u201cYou are looking for me,\u201d he said, \u201cnot because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval\u201d (vs. 26\u201327<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Still confused, the crowd asked, \u201cWhat must we do to do the works God requires?\u201d (v. 28<\/a>). Jesus gave a clear and direct response: \u201cBelieve in the one he has sent\u201d (v. 29<\/a>).<\/p>\n

A gift of bread. The Bread of Life. The enemy of our souls is allergic to that kind of bread.<\/p>\n

Faith Step: Try a bread from another country the next time you\u2019re at the grocery store. As you eat it, pray for the people of that country or region.<\/em><\/p>\n
