Howbeit at that time, not knowing God, ye were in bondage to them that by nature are no gods:

Galatians 4:8X

But at that previous time, when you had not come to be acquainted with and understand and know the true God, you [Gentiles] were in bondage to gods who by their very nature could not be gods at all [gods that really did not exist].

Galatians 4:8X

Consider your own progress: do you want to go backwards

8-11 At one time when you had no knowledge of God, you were under the authority of gods who had no real existence. But now that you have come to know God, or rather are known by him, how can you revert to dead and sterile principles and consent to be under their power all over again? Your religion is beginning to be a matter of observing certain days or months or seasons or years. Frankly, you stagger me, you make me wonder if all my efforts over you have been wasted!

Galatians 4:8X

¶ However then, when ye did not know God, ye did service unto those who by nature are not gods.

Galatians 4:8X

Before you Gentiles knew God you were slaves to so-called gods that did not even exist.

Galatians 4:8X

8-11 Earlier, before you knew God personally, you were enslaved to so-called gods that had nothing of the divine about them. But now that you know the real God—or rather since God knows you—how can you possibly subject yourselves again to those paper tigers? For that is exactly what you do when you are intimidated into scrupulously observing all the traditions, taboos, and superstitions associated with special days and seasons and years. I am afraid that all my hard work among you has gone up in a puff of smoke!
