1:9 a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots. Solomon began his reign by making a marriage alliance with Pharaoh (1 Kin. 3:1). He also traded in horses from Egypt (1 Kin. 10:28), and Pharaoh’s chariots with their twin stallions would be well-known and much admired in Israel. What is envisaged here would have been exceptional: a bejewelled mare among the stallions, causing wonder and excitement.
