Baal of Peor. Baal was a god of the eastern Mediterranean region at the time Israel was entering the Promised Land. Baal took slightly different characteristics in each local worship site and so is often identified by the region.
sacrifices offered to the dead. This could refer to funeral rituals of some sort. Canaanite funeral rituals involved heavy drinking, feasting, and obscene lust. The whole incident, initiated by Balaam, is reported in Num. 25.
