12:31–39 A grand procession took place, apparently beginning at the Valley Gate (3:13). Part of the procession, led by Ezra (v. 36), moved counterclockwise (v. 31), passing the Dung Gate, the Fountain Gate, and the Water Gate before proceeding to the temple. The other part of the procession, accompanied by Nehemiah (v. 38), moved clockwise (v. 38), passing the gates on the north side of the city before going to the temple.
