9:12 Elijah does come first. Though John the Baptist is not personally Elijah risen from the dead (6:14–16; cf. John 1:21), Jesus teaches that Elijah was indeed the Old Testament type who prefigured the Baptist’s ministry (cf. Luke 1:17).
