The young man’s love of riches (v. 22) and refusal to give them up to follow Jesus shows that he has broken the greatest commandment of all: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might” (Deut. 6:5; cf. Matt. 22:37). Lacking the total righteousness that God requires, he stands condemned.
