2:1–5 This passage reviews the preceding chapter, and like 2:20–3:6, provides the background for the narrative that follows. The covenant was made between God and “your fathers”; these are the parties to the covenant. The covenant terms forbid treaties or mixed worship with the Canaanites. Failure to observe these requirements brought the judgment of the covenant on Israel (Deut. chs. 28–31).
