21:1–42 The last part of the division of the land is the assignment of towns to the Levites, whose lack of an inheritance in the land has been mentioned in 13:14 (note), 33; 14:3–4; 18:7. These towns continued to belong to the tribes to which they had been assigned, but were provided, along with adjoining pasturelands (v. 8), for the Levites to live in.
