5:9 Judge is standing at the door. This verse reflects the urgent sense of the nearness of Christ’s coming. James is echoing the New Testament hope of the return of Jesus who comes at the end of the age. James may also be thinking of the radical nearness of judgment facing every person whose life will soon be over and who will stand before the judgment of God. See v. 3 where James mentions the “last days.”
