8:3 prophetess. Isaiah refers to his wife in this way, perhaps because of her association with him as a prophet, or perhaps because she was a prophet in her own right (Judg. 4:4; 2 Kin. 22:14).

Maher-shalal-hash-baz. See text note on v. 1. The name signifies the rapid devastation of Syria, Israel, and Judah, but also the presence of God with the remnant and the impending fulfillment of God’s word.
