27:9 guilt . . . sin. By undergoing God’s discipline (v. 7), Jacob, that is to say Israel, will pay their debt to divine justice for their idolatry. The proof that the discipline has been effective will be the destruction of the places where they worshiped idols. This atonement and new obedience illustrates on a national level what Christ would accomplish in a perfect way on behalf of a greater number (John 11:52).
