5:6 Melchizedek. This mysterious figure is mentioned only twice in the Old Testament (Gen. 14:18; Ps. 110:4). But the association here of the title “priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek” with the words “my Son” (v. 5) shows the exalted character of this priesthood, and justifies the author’s fuller explanation in ch. 7.
