an abomination to the Egyptians. As Palestinian shepherds, the Hebrews followed different dietary practices and slaughtered for food animals that were sacred to the Egyptians (46:34 and note). Such customs served the divine purpose by isolating the Israelites in the land of Goshen and preventing their assimilation into the pagan Egyptian culture (38:1–30 note).
