32:1 angels of God. Jacob again encountered the angels of God whom he met at Bethel (28:12). These angelic encounters upon leaving and returning to the Promised Land frame Jacob’s experiences with Laban (28:10–22 note) and attest to God’s promise to be with and protect Jacob wherever he went (28:15).
Faithful to His promise, God had been with Jacob—not only protecting him, but also remaking his character. The formerly prayerless and ambitiously deceptive Jacob was now a humble man of prayer (vv. 9–12).
